Holiday Guide 2015 Money Saving Tip #1

Holiday Guide 2015

Luv Saving Money’s Holiday Guide is never just about gifts.  There definitely are awesome budget friendly gift ideas but it’s also a guide to help you save some money during the holiday season.  The holidays are expensive.  Get nice gifts and save money, it can be done!  You’ll find helpful tips during November and December to help you save money on gifts, decor, food and more so let’s get started with the first tip of the guide!

Use Gift Cards To Get More Bang for Your Shopping Buck.  Here’s How:

gift card generic

There’s actually a couple ways to do this.

#1.  Some stores offer rewards for buying other retailers gift cards at their store.  For example, Giant Eagle gives you 10 cents fuelperks for every $50 in gift cards that you buy.  During the holiday season they’ll often bump it up to 20 cents fuelperks for every $50 you buy.  So if your vehicle has a 20 gallon tank and you’re filling up you could save $2-$4 on your fill up for each $50 in gift cards you buy.  BUT that’s not all.  Let me give you a scenario.

My oldest son has Madden 16 on his Christmas list.  My middle son has a couple Nerf guns on his Christmas list and my youngest son has WWE 2k16 on his Christmas list.  I know that the 2 video games will cost about $50 each.  I’m thinking the 2 Nerf guns my other son wants will probably be close to $50 total as well.  I also know I can buy all these things at Toy R’ US.  So I go and buy $150 in Toys R’ Us gift cards at Giant Eagle and earn myself at least 30 cents off per gallon (60 cents off per gallon if I buy during a 20 cents off promotion)  in fuelperks.  Now I could take those gift cards directly to Toys R’ Us and buy those things I mentioned but I want to save even more money. So what I do is I jump online and shop through one of my cash back sites like ShopAtHome.com and use my gift cards to shop online.  So now not only did I earn at least 30 cents off per gallon of gas in fuelperks but I’m also getting 1% cash back through the cash back site.   And you could do this for a lot of retailers and some give a lot more cash back.

#2.  Another option to save with gift cards is to buy gift cards from gift card swapping sites like GiftCareRescue.com (which I’ve personally used to both buy and sell) or cardcash.com.  You can buy gift cards for less than the value of the gift card.  For example, right now cardcash has a $15 Bath and Body Works gift card you can buy for $13.05. You’ll get the full $15 value but you won’t pay full price.  AND you can still take that gift card and shop Bath and Body Works online through at cash back site to buy a gift if you like.  ShopAtHome.com has 2% cash back right now and you earn 50 ShopGold points.

Even if you just want to give your recipient a gift card and don’t want to go through the cash back sites to buy a gift for them it’s still a good deal.  #1 gets you cheaper gas and #2 gets saves you money right off the bat on the gift card purchase.

Protecting Your Vacation With Travel Insurance

Today’s post is sponsored by Allianz Travel Insurance through the Bloggy Moms Network.

As a family of 6, it can be quite expensive to go on a real vacation. We only go on vacation once every 2 years. We didn’t go this year so next year should be our vacation year.  We only go domestic, usually do a beach on the east coast, and we drive but it’s still not cheap.  To fit our whole family comfortably we usually have to get a 2 or 3 bedroom condo or suite. We prefer to stay at an ocean front resort that has amenities so we have easy access to the beach. Then the resorts usually have extra things like swimming pools, restaurant, resort events, etc.

Princess Royals watermarked

Last year we went to Ocean City and stayed at the Princess Royale.  They had movies on the beach, an indoor swimming pool, outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, a gym, restaurant, gift shop, and we got an ocean front 3 bedroom room. That set us back $1500 just for the room for 4 days.  One thing in the back of my head when you think of the southern east coast in August is the possibility of hurricanes or some other issue coming up.  That’s why I consider travel insurance with our vacations.  I hate to be the pessimist but what happens if we invest all this money, something happens and we’re out all that money?

Allianz Travel Insurance offers peace of mind when booking your vacations. They are the leading travel insurance company offering financial protection and 24/7 travel assistance. Allianz Travel Insurance has conducted a Vacation Confidence Index Survey every years since 2009.  What they found is that more Americans will travel but plan to spend less on their 2015 trips.

They can help with things like emergency assistance in a number of areas both travel and medical, helping you recoup some or all of your money depending on your policy and more.

There’s also Concierge service for help with things like event tickets, gift arrangement, restaurant reservations, and more.  There are so many more benefits that I could make this post go on for a long time but I think you get the idea.

Allianz Travel Insurance can be purchased through many leading travel agents, most airlines, online travel agencies, other well-known travel suppliers, and www.allianztravelinsurance.com

How To Save Money At Staples

More and more people are jumping on board with the idea of home offices. In fact, many people

without a dedicated home office room still reserve some space in their home for office supplies, even if

it is just a desk or nook. And with the growing popularity of home offices over the past few decades,

there’s been a growing demand for office supplies and accessories. Staples has benefitted from this

trend and has grown as well. With its huge selection and affordable prices, Staples has become a

favorite stop for many people outfitting an office space.

Staples’ everyday prices are very reasonable, so it doesn’t take a lot of extra work to get a great deal.

However, with a little extra effort you can turn nearly every purchase into a great discount. Here are

our top shopping strategies to save money without sacrificing quality and selection at Staples.

Join Staples Rewards

The free Staples Rewards Program is very similar to other store loyalty rewards program. Complete a

simple registration by providing your name, address, phone number, and email address and enjoy

perks and benefits that make it worth your time to sign up for the program. There are lots of benefits

that come from Staples Rewards, including:

  •  2% back on all purchases. Every purchase you make at Staples earns 2% back in Staples

Rewards, which can be redeemed in store credit that can be used on almost anything in the

store. Reward vouchers are issued in $5 monthly increments, but they keep rolling over each

month until you have enough money to cash out or until the end of the following calendar

quarter. One example of this is if you went to Staples today and purchased $500 in

merchandise, you would get $10 added to your Staples Rewards account. That reward would

be issued at the end of the month, at which time you could use it on anything in the store.

Note the 2% reward bonus doesn’t apply to postage stamps, prepaid phone cards, gift cards,

and third-party website orders made on Staples.com).

  •  Free shipping on all orders. It’s rare to find a site that will ship everything for free, so this perk

definitely makes Staples Rewards stand out. Instead of paying for shipping or having to spend

a certain amount to qualify for free shipping on other sties, you can order anything and know it

will ship for free.

  •  Rewards for ink recycling. For every $30 you spend on ink or toner within 180 days at Staples,

you will earn $2 back in rewards, which will be added to your monthly amount.

  •  Bonus rewards events. Staples occasionally offers rewards members bonus points if they buy

a certain item in a certain time frame.

You can automatically upgrade your account to Plus by spending $500 to $1,000 at Staples over the

course of a year. Plus rewards members get 3% back in Rewards on all purchases, as well as $25 in

free print and copy services and a free diagnostic check on a device by a Staples’ tech expert. Spend

more than $1,000 at Staples in a year and you’ll also get exclusive savings offers and $20 towards a

year of tech support.

Use Promo Codes and Coupons

Staples offers a large amount of printable coupons and online coupon codes in the coupon section of

Staples.com. New coupons are released every week, so it can pay off to check back regularly.

Printable coupons can be used online or in store, while promo codes can only be used online. Check

Dealspotr before shopping at Staples to see the newest coupons. Note that Staples doesn’t accept

manufacturer’s coupons.

Staples coupons fall into two categories. “Transaction coupons” include storewide coupons that

discount an entire purchase. “Product coupons” include coupons that only work on a specific product.

You can only use one transaction coupon per order and one product coupon per item. Product

coupons can’t be applied to sale items or used with instant savings promotions.

Staples coupons generally come with a large list of exclusions, including Apple products, Bose

products, or mobile phone products or services. Visit Staples.com for a full list of exclusions.

Shop Staples.com Daily Deals, Clearance, and Deal Center

Staples gives customers lots of ways to save online. One of the best and most popular areas is the

Daily Deals page, which features a new discount every day. Although not every discount is amazing, it

can be worth it to check the site quickly every morning. Before making a Daily Deal purchase, be sure

to read the disclaimer so you are aware of the exclusions.

Another option is the Staples.com clearance section, which can occasionally have better discounts

than the Daily Deals page. Staples.com has a huge clearance selection, and it can be time consuming

to sort through all of the items, but it pays off with discounts regularly up to 90% off.

For a simpler way to save on Staples.com, try the Deals Center, which arranges sale items by

category and makes it easy to search for a specific item or category.

Staples sends printed circulars in the mail or local newspaper, but it also publishes the weekly

promotions on its website. Be sure to enter the right address to get the most recent ad.

Use Staples Rebates

Staples is one of the best stores out there for rewards, and looking at the Staples.com rebate section

can be well worth your time. Rebates typically apple to a specific brand or type of product. After

making the purchase, you usually have to fill out a form online or by mail and provide proof or

purchase. Within a few weeks, you’ll receive a check back for a portion of what you spent on the

product.

The best way to find rebates is on Staples.com, where you can search by product keyword, brand,

SKU, or rebate number to see eligible rebates and track the status of your submitted rebates. Before

making a large purchase at Staples, be sure to check the rebate section. There are typically a large

variety of rebates available, and some can be quite large. Finding a rebate can turn a good deal into a

great deal.

Price Match

Compared to most other stores, Staples has one of the best and most cooperative price matching

policies. Staples will match a lower price on the same item from a competitor, meaning any store that

sells products in store and online, including Amazon.com. Exclusions include clearance, grand

opening and liquidation sales, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or flash sales. Nearly every product in the

store is eligible for price matching, except for gift cards, postage, and tech support services.

Things get a little more complicated when you consider rebates. Staples considers its own rebates

when looking at price matching, but it doesn’t consider competitor rebates. For example, if you buy a

$50 item at Staples that has a $10 rebate, Staples will price match an item that is cheaper than $40,

not $50. On the other side, if a competitor has the same $50 item with a $10 rebate, Staples will price

match the item to $50, not $40.

You can also take advantage of price adjustments at Staples. If you buy an item and it goes on sale

within 14 days of purchase, you can visit the store and get a refund for difference between the price

you paid and the sale price.

Buy Discounted Gift Cards at Cardpool.com

Although they are typically thought of for gift giving, gift cards can also be a very useful tool when it

comes to saving money. Cardpool.com sells discounted gift cards for thousands of stores. It has

Staples gift cards for sell with a 7.5% discount, which means you can get a $49 gift card for $45.50.

Think of it as getting a 7.5% storewide discount. And because gift cards are simply a form of payment,

you can combine your gift card with sales and rebates to maximize your savings. When you add it up

over time, it can lead to major savings.

Cardpool.com sells electronic gift cards that can be used online immediately after purchase or printed

and used in store. The site also sells physical gift cards that are sent to you in the mail with free

shipping. You can also earn $5 for every friend you refer to Cardpool.com, so get out there and spread

the word to bring in the money!

6 Tips to Save Money on Your Cancun Trip

This post is brought to you by Hipmunk

Traveling to Cancun can be very relaxing and exciting. With its beautiful beaches and warm breeze, the island is a perennial favorite destination for vacationers. There are several things you can do to save money on your trip. Helping people save money on hotels in Cancun is what sites like Hipmunk try to do. Here are six tips that you should keep in mind for your own vacation.

Hop on a Bus

The public buses are everywhere and they are reliable and cheap. Don’t hesitate to use them to get around the island, as they only cost around 50 cents or less.

Consider an All-Inclusive Package

While it is true that in some destination trips, piecing your trip together can save you money, the opposite is true for Cancun. Many all-inclusive packages combine your hotel, meals and all drinks, including alcoholic ones, in one price.

Be Mindful of Data Roaming Charges

Most cell phone plans will charge you steep fees for international data roaming, so make certain you take the time to turn off your data roaming on your cell phone. Only turn on data roaming if it is absolutely necessary to avoid unpleasant fees on your cell phone bill.

No Need for a Phrasebook

You don’t need to go out and purchase a phrasebook. It is easy to find workers who understand and speak English. While a phrasebook may not cost much, it’s one expense that is unnecessary for your trip.

Travel Light

Try to travel only using a carry-on bag. By choosing the right bag, you can take full advantage of the space while saving additional checked baggage fees. You can do so by choosing clothing that is lightweight and wrinkle-resistant, layering items to change up your look. Try to minimize the number of shoes you plan to bring, as shoes take up lots of space. Choosing to travel light can also save you the time you would otherwise spend waiting in line at the baggage claim area.

Use Credit Cards for Better Exchange Rates

Using credit cards can give you better rates of exchange for most transactions. Be aware that some credit card companies do charge foreign transaction fees, however. Think about getting a card like the American Express Platinum card or another similar one that does not charge such fees.

Following these simple tips can help you save money on your next vacation. Remember to relax and plan ahead to gain the best vacation experience while also saving money.

Saving Money on Car Insurance

This is a sponsored post that i found relevant to Luv Saving Money.

Car insurance can get quite expensive. Here are just seven ways to lower your premiums and save your money for other, more enjoyable pursuits.

Pennies wikimedia

1. Ditch the Add-Ons

Many insurance packages come with extra coverage that you don’t actually need. For example, if your state only requires liability coverage, you can skip the “uninsured motorist” or “comprehensive collision” coverage. Snipping them out of your policy can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

2. Buy Locally

If you reside in Philadelphia, you’ll want to buy insurance in Philadelphia. The prices listed on insurance sites are often national or average rates; they don’t reflect the prices that a real-life insurance agent can give you for your region specifically.

3. Be Safe

Improved safety features can inspire insurance companies to lower your bill. This is because a well-protected car is less likely to be stolen than a clunker with worn-out locks. Beef up your vehicular security to pay less for your premiums.

4. Go Back to School

In the same vein as the above, you can make your insurance company trust you more as a driver if you attend a driver’s ed or road safety course. They’ll be able to give you certain discounts or percentages off because you’ve proven yourself as a conscientious citizen.

5. Raise Your Deductible

A higher deductible means a lower premium. You’ll need to pay the piper if you get into an accident, of course, but if you’ve been on the road for years without incident, it’s a risk you may be willing to take to save money every month.

6. Buy In Bulk

If you’re a two- or three-car household, don’t insure your vehicles separately. Put them all under the same policy with the same insurance company so you’ll be able to take advantage of their special “bulk” insurance packages.

7. Compare and Contrast

Last but certainly not least, take the time to do your homework before signing up with any particular company. Compare prices for both the month and the year; weigh the perks of one policy against the perks of another; read reviews of various brands and see which one is the preferred choice of others in your demographic.

These are just a few ways to spend less on auto insurance. Whether you’re a first-time driver or a veteran of the road, you’ll want to complete thorough research and get the best deal possible when insuring your vehicle.
