Talis woke up late the next morning and Dion was already gone to work. Talis looked to his cell
phone and found a text message waiting.
Didn’t want to wake you, babe, but I had to get to work. I love you.
Talis smiled and sent a quick reply back before getting out of bed. It was a good thing that Dion
was at work since Talis had some Coven matters to attend to. He threw on a pair of black jeans and a
sleeveless black shirt, then grabbed a pair of black leather gloves and slipped them on. He went to the
closet and pulled out a black leather trench coat, slipping it on along with a black bowler hat before
heading out of the room. In the main foyer, Teryn and Cian were waiting, dressed in similar attire, minus
the hat.
“I’m guessing Dion has no idea what we’re doing today, right?” Teryn asked.
“He has to work,” Talis replied. “Besides, this shouldn’t take too long.”
Cian shook his head. “I’m not so optimistic. We really don’t know what we’re walking into.”
“It’s a rescue and I don’t intend to ask a lot of questions,” Talis shot back. “Let’s just get this
done and get home.”
Talis led the way out and to the ferry off the island. He stood by the window in the seating area
of the ferry, looking out at the sea as they traveled. Teryn and Cian sat down and observed him.
“So, what do you think his problem is?” Teryn asked.
Cian shrugged. “I’d bet it has something to do with Dion.”
“I don’t know. His energy is off right now.” Teryn looked her brother over closely. “He’s not
getting weak but his energy is all over the place.”
Cian chose to look a little deeper, using his third eye instead of just his standard vision. Talis’
aura was always blue, but at that point it was a very dark blue and resembled an out of control fire.
“One of us should talk to him,” Teryn pointed out.
“Which means you want me to do it.” Cian pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose. “You
owe me for this.”
“Yeah, yeah, get to it.” Teryn shoved him towards Talis.
Cian headed over to stand next to Talis, who didn’t bother to look at him.
“So, do you want to tell me what’s wrong?” Cian asked.
“Nothing is wrong, I’m just on edge,” Talis answered. “I want this done before Dion is off work.”
“How are things with you two?”
Talis finally turned to him. “You live in the same house. You already know the answer.”
“I know only what you allow us to see,” Cian said calmly. “And I’m aware of Dion’s concerns over
your health.”
“Dion isn’t draining me,” Talis assured him.

“Then why is your energy so different?” Cian asked. “Your aura is off. Your control is off.”

Mac had almost made it back to his cabin when he heard Garth’s frantic bark again. The
sound hadn’t come from the lake, and Garth wasn’t out hunting night critters as he had earlier
suspected. This bark echoed from the area near the barn.
“Garth!” Mac hollered into the night.
Two harsh barks burst in rapid succession from the dog. A long, piercing howl swiftly
followed.
Worried the dog might be in trouble, Mac sprinted for the barn, surprised to find all the
doors shut. He heaved one of the large double doors open, and Garth bounded out, almost
knocking him over.
Mac stepped into the darkness of the barn and called out, “Vern? You in here?”
Nothing.
He squatted down to Garth’s level and suffered a couple face licks. “How did you get shut
up in the barn?” He ruffled the dog’s ears and noted the big canine appeared slightly unsteady on
his feet. “You okay, boy?”
Garth wagged his tail, and Mac led him out into the moonlight for a better look. A scream

ripped through the night air and stopped them both.
Cory!
Mac hauled ass for the main house with Garth huffing hard alongside, already winded and
laboring to stay on Mac’s heels. Something had happened to the big dog, but he couldn’t worry
about that now.
The two tore through the border of the side garden. Mac spied the kitchen door to the main
house standing wide open and raced that direction.
A second scream sliced through the air. This one sounded closer to the front of the house,
and Mac changed course to race in that direction. Garth stayed straight and bounded through the
open kitchen door as Mac cleared the front corner on the house.
He stumbled when he caught sight of a man in dark clothes and a black hoodie half-carrying,
half-dragging Cory down the front steps with a knife to her throat. Mac skidded silently into the
rhododendron bushes lining the porch. The assailant hissed over his shoulder to someone behind
him.
Okay. Two tangos.
A wolf-like howl echoed through the house, clearly audible through the open front door. A
heavy thud, a scream of pain, and vicious snarling erupted in rapid succession.
Mac had backup. Garth had made it inside.
Tango One still clutched Cory. Hearing the scuffle inside, he twisted around to see in the
front door, and his knife edged away from her throat. That was all the distraction Mac required.
Streaking from his cover, he grabbed Tango One’s knife arm and slammed it down hard on top
of his thigh. The weapon flipped to the grass at their feet.
Cory screamed, “Mac!” then elbowed Tango One hard in the gut and broke free.
“Run, Cory! Go get Vern!” he hollered and ducked as Tango One straightened and swung a
fist at Mac’s head.
Mac backed up a step as Tango One swung again, then leaped on the assailant’s back as the
man lunged for his dropped knife. The sounds of struggle inside the house continued, a man’s
pain-filled wails punctuated by Garth’s wolf-like snarls.
Mac choked Tango One as his fingers grazed the knife handle, then yanked him backward
and threw him down. Mac hammered his right fist into Tango’s jaw and buried his left fist in the
man’s gut in the ancient one-two punch. The guy was strong—almost as strong as Mac—but
when Mac grabbed the target’s hair and smashed the outside of his elbow into the guy’s temple,
the assailant sagged to his knees. Mac snatched off the black hood, and Tango’s head snapped up
to glare at him.

Mac would know that ugly mug anywhere. He had been ordered to study surveillance photos
of the bastard often enough. A yelp sounded inside the house, followed by a loud gunshot and a
scream of rage from close by. Mac did the unforgiveable and took his eyes off his target. Cory
hadn’t run as he had ordered, and she bolted up the steps and into the house.
“Cory, no!” he roared.
