I don’t like the looks of that fog,” Bob exclaimed nervously to Janet.
“Don’t be a coward and chicken out on me.”
“I’m not chickening out, just saying I don’t like the looks of that fog,” Bob said as he
opened his car door and stuck his foot out. “Let’s go,” he said, reluctantly.
Janet got out and the two of them walked towards the start of the trail. “That’s weird
looking fog. I wonder what it’s called?”
“People around here call it electrified fog,” he said.
“I’ve never heard of it. That sounds strange. Why do they call it electrified fog?”
“I’m not sure, but people said that their hair stood up and they could feel an electrifying
presence.”

“Jeremiah! The barn’s on fire!” she yelled to nowhere, taking the stairs two and three at a
time.
Her brother’s footsteps fell in behind her. “Let’s go!”
The pair hit the door at the same time, flinging it wide open. It cracked against the strain
of its hinges. Not bothering to turn around and close it, they raced for the barn. Rebekah hadn’t
grabbed a covering and her wet hair streamed out behind her like yellow ribbons from a
maypole. It slapped her in the face when the wind whipped from a different direction.
Grinding to a halt at the water pump, Rebekah grabbed Jeremiah by his shoulders.
“You help Pa! I’m going in for the animals!”
Jeremiah ferociously began pumping for Samuel who, before that moment hadn’t even
noticed that his two eldest children had joined him.
“Blitzschlag!” Samuel yelled in German. “Lightning struck the barn!”
The inside of their cozy barn was ablaze. Piles of the sweet-smelling hay, where
Rebekah had hidden from her brothers on lazy fall afternoons, were engulfed by the roaring,
ravenous flames. The yoke her father had hewn by hand as a boy was charred, hanging on a
blackened beam. A rafter collapsed, shocking her back to her senses.
Cream and Butter were tied up in their stalls, pulling and rearing at the ropes that had
become their enemy. Tiny Buttermilk bleated and mooed helplessly from behind her mother.
Rebekah yanked free the knots that held Cream and Butter at bay. The eyes of her
normally-docile cows were wild and terrifying, but Rebekah grasped the lead ropes in her hands
anyway and turned to lead them out.
She looked back at the tiny calf, frozen in fear. Their eyes met. “I’ll be back for you,”
Rebekah swore.
Turning, she sang the flapjack ingredients song loudly, so as to be heard over the roaring
flame, in a futile attempt to keep both her and the frightened cattle calm.
Another flaming beam snapped and fell behind them, spooking Butter. The milk cow
bellowed and reared, dancing on her hind legs before jerking free from Rebekah and tearing off
into the heart of the storm.
Rebekah stumbled and fell with the force of Butter’s yank, sending her sprawling in the
mud. Pushing herself up, she managed to miss being trampled by Cream’s frightened hooves
that stomped around her.
“Cream!” she yelled, her voice deep and foreign in her own ears, “Come on!” Ever
obedient, Cream, though skittish, walked on to the house with Rebekah.
Tying the nervous cow to the front door, a strong pair of hands fell upon Rebekah’s
shoulders, turning her around.
“It’s over,” her Pa yelled, pulling her to his chest in a tight hug. “It’s over, girl. It’s over.” It
sounded as though he were trying to convince himself of that fact more than convince her. Over
his shoulder, she saw that the fierce fire had overtaken the barn. Angry flames licked skyward
from the loft.
Stiffening, a scream tore from her lips. “Buttermilk!”
“The baby’s gone,” her father yelled.
“No!” Struggling against his iron grasp was futile, but after a moment she managed to
wean her way from under his elbow.
“Rebekah, stop!” Samuel bellowed. “Stillgestanden!”
Ignoring him, Rebekah dodged Jeremiah’s clutches easily, her eyes and heart already
set on the glowing barn.
“Buttermilk, I’m coming,” she screamed again. Her father rasped behind her. Thankfully,
he was all tired out from fighting the fire. She sped ahead, leaving him wheezing in the mud
outside the barn.
“Rebekah, don’t baby, please.” His weak words sounded as far away as Germany as she
raced into the barn.

I’m a sucker for good ghost stories, especially if they’re supposed to be true. If you really want to draw me in then you know who the ghosts are supposed to be and their back story.

Living in Pennsylvania, myself, I’ve heard plenty of stories about the haunted battlefields at Gettysburg. There are even local ghost stories that were supposed to be real people in my little town. Look up “Becky’s Grave” sometime. There’s all kinds of stories. It seems the Becky they are references is a real person but there is a lot of discrepancies in stories about why she haunts the graveyard, what happened to her, and even where her grave actually is.

I truly enjoyed reading Haunted Charlottesville and Surrounding Counties. Even though I’ve not been to the areas talked about in the book I can understand the idea of the sitings. Many with Civil War era roots. I found myself reading this book at night before bed and getting chills as I read it. I particularly liked the stories that came out of Castalia Manor. When you have to bring in a psychic to help a ghost cross over and they do it just really adds to the story.

The pictures included in the book really help to show the history and where the hauntings might take place. There’s part of me that really wants to go and visit some of these places while another part asks “Are you crazy woman?” So perhaps I’ll just live vicariously through the stories Susan Schwartz has so kindly put together.

details of feelings like nature’s rhythm of delicate music notes. And, she holds a very special place in her
heart for her
favorite combination of saxophone and glass harp.

Today, he caressed his fingers along my face, the most gentle of touch, and as he did, memories of
moments when he has
before breathe within my heart. Moments that I’ve drawn out in these series of photos that I’ve created
today, and are
titled “A View of Feelings’ Touch From My Love.”
The first photo is of a dance with the composition notes written in the pixels of the textures that create
this image.

Dance:
Danseur approaches ballerina with an outstretched open hand. Ballerina places her hand in his with her
smile in
her eyes to bre-in-perso , and they begin to weave along the columns with hummingbird-penguin
sculptures
carved in them. A duet of adoryu adream petite continues into an extended duet of adoryu abea uh li .

A dance that interweaves with the second photo of a page numbered with more than imagined. A page

that starts with a
note written in a gentleman’s graceful hand. An invitation bioluminescent from within that extends into
notes that
composes songs of his heart. My pulse has been in a new rhythm since I received his invitation, and the
song of him
embraces me in delicate symphonies of sound.
The page continues into the third photo of words from within a flower bouquet that sing from the center.
And, with a light
touch of a paint brush, I’ve added to the melodic colors to bring sight to the song. Flowers of Arabian
jasmine with their
amazing, gorgeous scent, and chocolate cosmos with soft midnight velvet petals are held in a continuous
ribbon of
lovecontu. A bouquet that holds my heart like my love holds me.
A floral scent that stays with me into the fourth photo of a painting that is on a canvas that is like
cashmere’s special fiber.
Colored pencils in the brush strokes layer in the pink glow, and hum that emanate from a lighthouse. The
glow and hum
that has been with me since his first overture.
And, an underscore that continues into this fifth photo of a crescent moon held in the deepest realms of
the night’s sky,
and gentle lightness of daylight for a natural orchestra, accompanied with tender vocal chords that
harmonize like the
beautiful color palette of seafoam green and antique silver. Music to my ears since I heard his name, and
our walk
together began.
Gentle sonic chords lengthen in their notes within the soundwaves, and are in the sixth photo of a quiet
saxophone and
glass harp. An instrumental duet that I hope continues to repeat like the tender caress of my love.
