It draws people from all over the world and sometimes things slip through from our world into others while sometimes things slip from other worlds into our own. Nightmare things. During World War II an experiment was done using a steam engine to see if entering another dimension could create instant transportation of goods and men from one place to another. It unlocked a nightmare from another dimension and only agents from the agency IDEA were able to stop reality from unraveling. The train, known as The Wraith, disappeared along with the scientist who built it. Now, in present day, a young man hears the distant sound of a train whistle. The rundown train station at the end of the wooded path is somehow regenerating. Plus, people in and around Knorr are acting a little stranger than normal. Hey there, people, it’s Matt again. I don’t know if you guys bothered to listen to Tabitha and Warren this morning, but that damn
story scared the crap out of me. I’m telling you, there’s something about this town. There are all kinds of stories. I went over to
the Hollis house last night with my folks and had time to just sit and talk with Warren. He told me all about this girl Sapphire and
the rumors of ghosts and this kid named Jimmy.
It was crazy.
So, here I am in the backyard. You can see the sun has gone down and the stars are out. Look at how many of them you can
see up there. This is something we did not get in St. Louis. In St. Louis, during the summer, it’s like the sky turns into soup or
something. You can barely see the moon, let alone the stars.
As I say, there are advantages.
Here, listen to what you can hear out here.
See? Quiet. This time of the year the katydids and the cicadas are even quiet. You can hear a few bugs, but nothing else. I
understand that, during the high school football season, you can even hear the announcements and the game being played right
here in the yard.
I like to come out here at night. Sometimes you see raccoons and I saw a few coyotes. I understand there are sometimes bears
out here. Black bears. I do not want to run into a bear, but I also think it would be pretty cool to see one.
The thing which amazes me is how far away you can hear things. I guess I mean, how far sound carries. When it is really quiet
during the afternoon, you can softly hear the engines of the jets that fly way overhead. Folks, we are nowhere near an airport, so
you just see the contrails – or are they chemtrails? – way up there. But when the breeze quiets and you sit here and close your
eyes and listen, you can hear the engines. By the time the sound gets here, you can’t even find the damn plane anymore, but I
swear you can hear it.
I dunno. Maybe it’s my imagination. Whatever.
At night, you can lay back in the lawn and see the stars and you can even see satellites. I have a friend who insists you can’t
see satellites, but that‘s total bullshit – oops, sorry. You can. They crawl across the night sky and they don’t blink. If you see
blinking it’s an airplane. I can see shooting stars and stuff, too. It would amaze you at just how many stars there actually are
when you look.
I mean –
Wait.
Can you hear? Listen.
That’s a train whistle, I think. I hope the microphone can pick it up. I know there are train tracks somewhere around here, but I
didn’t think it was close enough to hear anything. I just said you can hear jet engines at 35,000 feet, but there are a lot of trees
and houses between here and the nearest train tracks.
There it is again.
I’ve been out here a bunch of times since we moved here, but I have never heard that before. It sounds weird, too.
Then again, I never listened to freight trains. We only get those out here. So quiet.
Man, that is just eerie. I mean, I know it’s a train, but somehow weird, haunted, sound is just eerie in the middle of the night.
Oooh, man. I have chills.
OK, well, that’s enough for now. I swear, I have friends and I will do a video where you meet some of them. Gonna shut this off
and watch the stars for a bit and see if the train whistle dies away. Have a good night.

Matt put the phone down and stuffed it back into his pocket. He listened again. Sure enough, there it was again. The soft
whistling sound. It sounded alone and scared, to him, as if some great beast were trapped somewhere in the woods and needed
help. Chills went up and down his arms and his hair stood on end. There were few things creepier, he decided, than hearing the
haunted sound of a train whistle in the middle of the night.
He heard the sliding glass door open, there was a moment when all sound became drowned out by the sound of the television
inside blaring. Then came the sound of the sliding door again and was gone.
“Hey, sport, whatcha doin’ out here?” his father asked, trying to sound informal and sounding anything but.
Matt turned his head a bit to catch sight of his dad. His father was still a handsome man as he headed headlong into his 50s.
His dad was a man who still ran in those shorter marathons people always had for charities, but in his younger days had done a
few full-length ones and even a triathlon or two. He still had a good head of hair and was getting an older-man paunch which
would never quite go away no matter how many 5Ks he ran, courtesy of so much time spent bent over blueprints behind his
desk in his office.
Matt and his father had always gotten along. Sure, there had been times, even just two years ago, when things had gotten tense
between them. That was natural. These days, though, things were good. He loved the old man.
“Not much,” he replied. “Just looking at these stars. I didn’t even realize how many of them were out there and that we could see
just by looking up.”
He bent his head back and looked up again, just for a second forgetting about the haunting train whistle.
His dad looked up at the sky and smiled. his hands in his back pockets. He meandered down the lawn to where Matt was and
when he got to his son, he put a hand on his shoulder.
“I’m glad you’re finding the positives in our move, Matt,” he said. “I know you were not the biggest fan of coming here. But there
are lots of good things, too. Like the stars.”
Matt gave a weak smile back to his dad. Not everything was perfect, of course. It worried him about starting college. He was
worried about finding more friends and making the right choices. But, all in all, this had been a pretty good move.
Just then the sound of the haunting train whistle filled the air again.
“Hey, dad, do you hear that?” Matt asked.
“What?”
“Listen. Do you hear the train whistle?”
They stood there in silence. Then his dad smiled and nodded.
“Yeah. Sound really travels out here. Must be a freight train way over near Clarion or something. Sure sounds far away.”
Matt wasn’t so sure that was the answer. There was just something off about this sound. “It’s been going on for a while now.
Sounds weird to me. Spooky.”

“Yeah, it sound lonely, but I’m sure the oddness of the sound is just the distance,” he dad said. “You must get used to the way
sound travels out here in the country, Matt.”
They listened in silence for a few more minutes. There were some more blasts from that whistle. Distant and lonely. Still
reminding Matt of some trapped creature, and perhaps one which wasn’t friendly, either. That sent more chills down his back
and caused the hair on his arms to stand at attention again.
“Hey, did you know our property has part of an old rail line on it?” his dad said, suddenly, startling him out of his reverie.
“What?”
“Yeah, really. There used to be a main train line here which ran right through the property. There’s even an old train station
somewhere. People used to use this property for boarding trains to new York or Boston or whatever. It went through downtown
Knorr, too. Anyway, they abandoned the line for whatever reason back around World War Two and just kind of left some tracks
and the station. I saw the roof of the old station when I first came out here to look at the place.”
“Where?” Matt asked, now curious.
His dad pointed off past the yard into the darkness beyond. The yard itself was rather large, but it was ringed at the edge by a
thick grouping of trees. It was just deep darkness and blackness at the moment. Matt had meant to head into the woods and
explore it, but had yet to find the time.
“Over there. Head down sometime and check it out,” his dad said. “But be careful. The place is really run down. Probably filled
with all kinds of animals, spiders, snakes and things. Not to mention filled with old rusty nails and rotted boards. But, it might still
look cool. You still do photography?”
Matt nodded. “Yeah. Brought the camera. Was thinking of turning one room in the house into a dark room and do some old
fashioned stuff. Black and white.”
“That sounds like fun,” his dad said. “There’s a place down in the basement just off of my office which might work.”
They sat in silence for a bit and stared up at the stars and listened to the whistle. Slowly, the whistle faded away, and the silence
returned. A moment later the katydids and the crickets started up again. Matt was tired, and he clapped his old man on his own
shoulder and headed back.
“I’m going to hit the hay, dad,” he said.
“Sounds good, Matt,” his dad replied.
Matt headed through the kitchen and upstairs. He could hear the television on and his siblings laughing at something on the
screen in the living room. His mother was probably there, too, but he decided he was tired and just wanted to stretch out on his
bed and maybe listen to some music.

He headed upstairs and round the corner, into his room. As a gesture of peace, his parents had given him the larger of the non-
master-bedrooms. It overlooked the backyard, and the view was pretty spectacular of all the trees. During the winter, when the

leaves were off most of the trees, he guessed he could see pretty far off into the distance.
He did not have to work tomorrow. It was a Friday, and he had traded days off with another of the bus boys. The other kid had
needed to take the day Matt normally had. He hoped doing things like this would get him a reputation as being a nice guy. He
hoped people would accept him around here. It was tough enough being in a small town.
He opened the window and let in a bit of the breeze. He was having trouble just giving up on the night air and the beautiful sky.
His thoughts were jumbled, and he wondered if he should FaceTime with his friend, Jason, back in St. Louis. He knew Jase
would likely still be up and would probably talk to him. They had been inseparable back in Missouri. They had made all the
promises to stay in touch and stay friends, but Matt could already feel the distance between them.
He changed out of his clothes and into sweats and a T-shirt. Then he walked over to the bookcase nearby to turn on the stereo
and listen to some music. He was still old-fashioned and liked listening to music on vinyl, so he sifted through his record
collection until he found an old Pink Floyd record. He dusted it and placed it on the turntable. Just as he was about to put the
needle on it, he paused.
There it was again. The whistle. Soft, haunted, distant.
Was it the same one? It couldn’t have been, and yet Matt was instantly sure it was the same whistle from the same train. That
made no sense. Freight trains didn’t suddenly back up or circle back around or something.
He stood there for a moment, his hand holding the needle and the black disk spinning around and around.
There was a loud click, and he jumped, the needle lurched in his hand and scratched across the record, but he didn’t hear it.
Instead, the radio on the stereo switched on all by itself. The dial glowed on the ancient stereo and the digital numbers went
crazy. Tuned to the AM dial and there was a loud squeal of static and then the numbers moved up and down rapidly. Amid the
static he caught fragments of sentences and words from stations all over the country, with the AM band being able to pick up
things from all over at night. The words came faster and faster, just an instant of one more and it all blurred into one loud and
long blast of static.
“…coming…”
Matt stepped back from his stereo. “What?” he said.
More static, in a steady pulsing sound, almost hypnotic. Bursts of static and tiny phrases and words.
“…death…”
He felt the sweat grow cold on his forehead and the blood turned to ice in his veins. What had he just heard?
“…the…”
A slight pause and more static at a steady pulsing, like a bad rap song.
“…wraith…”
The pulsing went on for a while and then there was the distant sound of the train whistle, drifting in through the open window.
Long and mournful and so distant it was like it wasn’t really there. A breeze kicked up, and the curtain wavered in it, blowing in
toward Matt like reaching hands.
Then it was gone.
The whistle vanished along with the breeze and the curtain settled. The stereo suddenly switched back to the record player and
Matt jumped as the song Time, with its myriad of alarm clocks and chimes filled the room.
He quickly stepped over to the volume dial and turned the sound down. His heard hammered in his chest and he was sweating
profusely. He whirled the needle from the record and shut off the stereo.
“What the fuck?”
There was no response from the radio or the stereo. There was no whistle in the night. There was no breeze.
He had no idea what to do now. What did you do when there was a ghostly train whistle and your stereo suddenly came to life
and created sounds from snatches of static and radio stations?

So, he sat down on his bed and stared out the window for a while. The night grew cooler and got later, the stars brighter. He
was sure he could never get to sleep, but he stretched out on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. With the word “wraith” running
around inside his skull he drifted off to sleep.

When Coralie started writing, she had come up with short stories about historical houses. Those
that bore strange, and dark pasts stained in blood, treason, or curses. All were related to
supernatural beings and legends that always fascinated her. Not that she believed in vampires
or anything, but she did enjoy writing about them. When she got her first contract with a
publishing house, Coralie was asked to write more. and so, she came up with her first novel that
took place in a ghost town. Now, she had decided to push the boundaries a little more. She
wanted to write a series about a real vampire, that was rumored to live in the woods of Raleigh
near her rented summerhouse. The house was on the land of an old colonial mansion known as
the Bourbon House.
The night was warm and comfortable. Coralie was enjoying the firmament in the quietest part of
southwest Raleigh. The trees were tall and mature, giving the street she walked on an
enchanting feel, as their leaves danced in the wind. Coralie admired the flower bushes, some of
them in early bloom while others were still deprived of flowers. However, they still looked
beautiful. She had her hands in her sweater pockets, headphones on and she was listening to
her favorite country music station, thinking about moving down to North Carolina. After shopping
for her groceries, and meeting warm, welcoming people, she thought this could be a town she
would finally be happy to live in, she was tired of the never-ending winters of the north.
I always said I was born in the wrong place.
The wind suddenly changed, and Coralie stopped walking. Upwards, the tree leaves changed
direction. Downwards, shadows moved. Coralie was not an easy woman to scare. Supernatural
researchers in many investigations had often invited her to study their cases with them, and
write a blurb or two about them for their blogs, podcasts, and other media outlets. She had even
spent the night in the famous haunted Colorado resort hotel from that horror movie everyone
was talking about. Also, Coralie wasn’t that easy to take down. I might be a little rusty, but I’m
pretty sure it’ll come back to me fast.
Coralie had studied both tae kwon do and jujutsu, and knew very well how to defend herself. For
an exceptionally long time, she had fought against her shyness and her lack of self-confidence.
Because her first boyfriend was a martial arts teacher, he convinced her to give it a shot. Now,
she owned black belts in both arts, and had learned to defeat her stage fright when attending
book conventions.
Come on, show yourself.
She was not expecting anything like this. Four dark figures appeared – four men, dressed all in
black. Their skin was as pale as the moonlight, and carried a subtle blue glow. Their eyes were
bright, reflecting a bright specular light that seemed lifeless. However, looking closer, she could
see their eyes were as red as a rose. Coralie stepped back, took off her headphones and she
widened her stance, lowering her body, ready to defend herself for the first time in her life.
Confident in her skills, taking four people down should be doable for someone as strong as her,
she tried to convince herself. Fangs? Those people are vampire wannabes. I thought I was in
Raleigh, not Transylvania! This should be very easy, she thought.
“You are new here, aren’t you, little bloodbag?” One of the men said eyeing her.
“Bloodbag?” Coralie repeated in a monotone voice, showing her annoyance to the quartet.
“Oh, but what have we here? A quicklife that thinks she’s at the top of the food chain!” One said
while circling her with a noticeably light footstep as he looked into her eyes.
“Quicklife? Seriously, you guys need to get a life outside this roleplay you’re doing.” Coralie
replied as she turned her back on them, but not without paying attention to their every sound;
they were incredibly quiet, which was disconcerting.
As she moved her head up to look confidently in front of her, the leader of the four appeared
before her eyes. She wanted to scream, she had to admit, but she couldn’t show them her
fears. He wore a black suit, and he must have been about her age, although and a little taller
than she was. He had a unique sea scent that emanated from his pale white skin.
“I’ll have her.”
“Excuse me, Dracula?”
“Oh, how I wish.”
He brought his hand next to her chin, and used his fingers to lift her head up moving her it from
side to side. Coralie quickly hooked his elbow and forced him down on his knees, pushing her
own into his back. The man growled, she violently dislocated his shoulder, shouting at the top of

her lungs, “Who’s next!”
One threw himself at her. Coralie pulled his arm, used his momentum, and shoved him against
the oak tree. As the other moved in, she was about to propel herself to kick the man in the chest
with her foot, but she felt the leader restraining her.
Impossible, I dislocated his arm from his shoulder! She thought with a jolt.
There was no time to think. Coralie used the man’s grip as leverage to lift her body up and
squeeze the man’s head between her knees. She applied so much pressure that she could feel
his throat slowly collapsing, but strangely, the man was still smiling widely. The leader let go of
her and she quickly contracted her abs, giving herself a swing, had a man with the broken pipes
fell back onto the asphalt.
“You are a fighter. I love it when my preys are skilled!” The leader screamed, with his arm
strangely back in place.
“I am nobody’s prey!” Coralie shouted as she witnessed all four still ready to fight, and just as
strong as they were when she first saw them.
In the blink of an eye, all four were circling her. Coralie was not about to surrender, but it was
clear that something strange was going on. She was about to believe that vampires truly
existed, and she heard the leader ordering his bodyguards to step back.
“I will make her mine, and then, she’ll be my source of nourishment. I’ll have her fight me again
and again.” The man laughed as he eyed her. His fangs out, he violently pulled Coralie toward
him, and with strength more significant than she had ever felt, for the first time she sensed as if
her body weighed a ton. She was unable to move or fight. One tear rolled down her face the
moment she was about to be forced to surrender.
“Stop! Don’t you dare touch my fiancée.” A strong voice suddenly thundered out from behind
her.
Coralie saw a tall silhouette walking against the last of the street lanterns, toward the dead-end
where she was held against her will in the arms of a supposed vampire that was ready to make
her his main course. “Blackwood? What are you doing here?” The man appeared a little uneasy.
“I am the Duke of the southern states. I rule over these lands, and you are holding my fiancée.”
The newcomer replied with a cold voice.
“I see no ring, no mark, how do I know you are telling the truth?” the leader said in a nasal
voice.
Coralie listened to every word, still held firmly in place. She doubted she could even try to
attempt an escape. She was not engaged to anyone, and at that moment, she wasn’t dating
anyone either. Coralie didn’t know anything about what was going on that night.
“Her ring is being sized, and I leave no mark. That woman has a career that brings her to meet
readers. I won’t compromise our existence.” He walked toward her, and she saw his long black
layered hair, and his deep green hypnotizing eyes, and a shy smile. There was a cool breeze
that took over her mind, and she heard his voice whisper; “My name is Damian Blackwood, trust
me, I will save you. I promise.”
Coralie closed her eyes, and a few tears rolled down her face. She thought she had lost her
mind. She hoped when she opened her eyes she would see that she was alone, and calling a
therapist might take care of the problem. But, she was still being held tightly against the leader’s
chest, and the tall, dark man was only a few feet away.
“Is this true; are you this vampire’s fiancée?”
She took a deep breath, thought carefully about all the possible scenarios, sadly, none of them
seemed to work in her favor. It was either fight your way out of this hoping for the best, or tell a
lie and escape with, wait…a vampire?
“Yes, I am Damian Blackwood’s fiancée.”
By mentioning his name, she confirmed to the leader that she knew her rescuer even though
the leader believed moments ago she denied the existence of vampires.
She tried to slowly back away, but when she was about to walk past Damian who was speaking
to the leader, she felt him grab her hand, and hold her tight behind his back, as if protecting her
from the quartet. “You know, if this is a lie, I can still make her my bloodbag. My Prime Giver
and I would feed on her solely for the rest of her life, which I would prolong by giving her my
blood.”
“You know by threatening me, you are directly threatening my father, and we both know you
don’t want to upset my father,” Damian said, staring the leader down.

The leader’s eyes widened, his brows lifted quickly before frowning. He showed his fangs to
Damian, who responded with a sardonic laugh. “I will be back in three nights. If she is not your
wife by then, I’m taking her, and you will have to answer for your lies, Damian Blackwood.”

“As if this job could get worse,” Kieron Lucero muttered under his breath. His companion,
Mitchell Calderon, grimaced in agreement.
“You there! Guards! Get into place and watch the cargo. I’m not paying you to gossip.”
Alphonse, the overfed merchant who had hired them for this job, glared at them. “There are
brigands in these woods. I need you to stay sharp!”
Kieron and Mitchell had worked lousy jobs before. Kieron’s military background, along with
his impressive height and strong muscles, made him a natural sell-sword – despite having the
face of an angel, curly brown hair, and blue eyes that won over the ladies.
Mitchell’s past was more brawler than soldier, but even those who didn’t guess that he was a
wolf-shifter knew to keep their distance. They took one look at his muscular build, slate gray
hair, and yellow eyes, and knew a predator when they saw it.
Jobs had been scarce, and money tight. Normally, Kieron and Mitchell could pick and
choose. But lately, with the bad harvest and some unrest to the north, caravans and traveling
merchants weren’t plentiful. He’d been too quick to agree to the job and let down the people
depending on his judgment. There would be time to berate himself for his mistake later. They’d
signed on without asking enough questions, and this is what it got them. Trouble.
Alphonse reminded Kieron of a slug, all the more so once he and Mitchell discovered what
the cargo actually was.
People. They’d been hired by a fawking slaver.
Kieron’s molars ground together. As soon as he and Mitchell had found out, they’d made
plans. But as Kieron knew well from his time in the army, things could—and did—go wrong,
even with the best strategy. And what the two of them had dreamed up didn’t come close to
being anyone’s “best” plan. On the other hand, it beat the shite out of the alternatives.
Aside from Kieron and Mitchell, their party included Alphonse, the wagon driver, two other
guards who had probably been hired out of an alley behind a local tavern, and the hapless
prisoners in the wagon. Alphonse, Kieron, and Mitchell rode their own mounts. The other guards
either rode with the driver of the wagon or walked beside it.
Kieron had stolen a look inside and counted five men and women, likely bought from the
debtor’s prison in Kortufan. The wagon that carried them was a big wooden box with a single,
barred window. A heavy lock secured the door. Kieron had listened for the drag and clink of
manacles, relieved when he only heard the shuffle of feet and low voices.
The Rhone Forest cut a swath across the kingdom of Trinadon, impossible for travelers to avoid.
The steep Shahoran Mountains and the white-capped rapids of the mighty Tellgran River
restricted the paths of the highways that cut through the forest.

Blood Ties Jill Andersen Mysteries Book 2

For as long as Jill Andersen could remember, her father was a hero. But heroes don’t commit murder, do they? The state of Maryland said Paul Andersen did just that, three times over, and was set to execute him for it. But Jill and the rest of her colleagues at the Baltimore Police Department come across the murder of a law student that leaves her hopeful that she can clear her father’s name. While Jill and her colleagues work against the clock to clear her father’s name, new players emerge, hinting to a deeper, darker conspiracy than what was previously known. Behind the Badge Jill Andersen Mysteries Book 3

For Jill Andersen, being part of the Baltimore Police Department has always been both a tremendous honor and a serious responsibility. Her father, before his fall from grace, had instilled in her a great respect for police and the work they do day-to-day. But when a teenage boy winds up dead on the outskirts of downtown Baltimore, Jill finds herself once again faced with those who would abuse their badges to fulfill personal agendas and uphold biases. Jill still has a job to do, but she soon finds that not everyone is in her corner. For the first time in almost four years working Homicide, Jill finds herself at odds with people who claim to be on her side. From other cops to suits downtown all the way to the Mayor’s office, it becomes increasingly clear that Jill will need to rely on more than just her badge if she’s to solve this case. Behind the Mask Jill Andersen Mysteries Book 4

It’s hard to be a hero when everyone’s out to get you. Once upon a time, Jill Andersen considered herself a hero. Not just because of the badge handed to her by the city of Baltimore and the pledge she once made to protect and serve. Her secret life, as the vigilante Bounty, had allowed Jill to protect her native Baltimore in ways her day job never could. But all that has gone to hell now. One case pushed Jill past her limits, to the point where she made choices she can’t take back. As a result, the entire city is on the lookout for her. Allies can no longer be counted on. People who were once in her corner might very well be trying to bring her down… to say nothing of those she has crossed along the way. But that is the least of Jill’s problems. A shadowy figure emerges among the chaos, and his link to Jill’s past has the potential to be her ultimate undoing. Jill thought every link to Project Fusion has been settled once she solved Dr. Trent Roberts’ murder almost one year ago, but if she’s not careful, her past might just kill her. Behind the Mask, the gripping, hard-hitting fourth novel in the Jill Andersen mystery series (Bounty, Blood Ties, Behind the Badge), gives readers yet another taste of author J.D. Cunegan’s comic book-inspired brand of fast-paced prose, with chapters that fly by and plot twists that will leave readers guessing and waiting for more. Add to GoodreadsAmazon * Apple * B&N * Kobo

Boundless excerpt
Jill was glad the left side of her face was made of metal.
Otherwise, the shards of glass raining down around her would have hurt far more. Her face stung as
it was, having smashed against the window like that. A large hand tugged on the back of her bodysuit,
meaty fingers wrapped around black leather with surprising give. Jill’s assailant yanked her away from
the plane glass, and a gust of wind rushed onto the twentieth floor of the downtown high-rise. A flick of
the man’s wrist sent Jill across the room, her back slamming against the wall and a framed photograph
crashing to the floor.
More shattered glass.
Jill Andersen had crawled back to her feet by the time her attacker drew close again. She ducked his
left fist, which buried itself in the wall behind her. She slammed her own fist into the man’s stomach, and
when he doubled over, she wrapped her hands around his neck and flung him face-first into the carpet.
She yanked off his black ski mask before he could get back to his feet, tossing it aside and grabbing him
by the collar.
“Alright, fuckface,” she growled through labored breath, “you’re paying for that window.”
The silver on the left side of Jill’s face surrounded an infrared eye, which shone brighter than usual in
the darkness of the office. She made sure the light hovered in her attacker’s field of vision. His red beard
was close-trimmed, his eyes impossibly blue. They were also useless, with the red light shining in his
face. He reached out to wrap his hands around Jill’s neck, but his aim was off and Jill’s grip on him was
impossibly tight.
Jill was decked out head to toe in black leather and matching combat boots, the lone holdover from
her military days. A layer of silver mesh armor laid beneath the suit, and Jill wore black gloves that
reached her elbows. A katana was strapped to her back, though she hoped she wouldn’t have to use it.
During the day, Jill was one to wear her brown hair in a ponytail, but in this outfit, having her long locks
hanging down over her face seemed more fitting.
It added to the mystique, but it also helped keep her identity secret. The eyeplate on her face, which
ran from her cheek to her hairline, also helped. The infrared sensor and microscopic supercomputer in
her brain made all this possible, as did the titanium coating her entire skeleton.
“I know what you did,” Jill said, tightening her grip. Her attacker’s eyes grew wide and his legs swung
when she lifted him off the floor, not unlike the way her younger brother Brian’s legs used to swing off the
pier whenever they visited Baltimore’s Inner Harbor as children. Back in those days, Jill had always
wanted to jump right into the Chesapeake Bay, but Brian had always been content to sit on the edge.
“Doesn’t,” the man began, cringing when Jill tightened her grip. “Doesn’t matter.”
Jill frowned. The man was scared, but not of her. Not that she necessarily wanted someone to be
scared of her — okay, maybe just a little — but fear of the mysterious other meant things were more
complicated than she thought. Still, some fear directed her way would be nice. This costume wasn’t
cheap, especially on her salary.
“Kill me if you want,” he added. “You’ll never touch him.”
“I’m not gonna kill you,” Jill said. “But I’m thinking whoever ‘he’ is might, once he finds out what went
down here.”
