Holiday Guide 2014

Walmart Holiday Toyland is coming to a store near you.  With the hottest holiday toys available, it makes me think about one Christmas toy that really stands out in my mind…..

I still believed in Santa. It was an exciting time. I’ll be honest, I don’t remember exactly how old I was or even what year it was, but I remember that Christmas.  I’d guess I was about 7 years old, maybe 8.  My parents were early shoppers (as I found out).  The biggest thing on my Christmas list that year was a Barbie Dreamhouse.

I was the oldest of 4 kids.  My parents didn’t have a lot of money.  At the time I wouldn’t know not to ask for such a thing since, Santa brought that stuff.  I remember the one I wanted.  It was plastic: Red, white, and yellow.  It separated into 3 different pieces and had 6 rooms for Barbie and her friends.

I would say it was about a month before Christmas, I ventured into my parents bedroom.  I wasn’t  supposed to be in there by myself  but I guess that’s what made it more appealing.  I was snooping around, the closet door was cracked a little.  I noticed a colorful box in view.  I snuck over and opened the door further.  There was a big box, it was the Barbie dreamhouse.  I ran downstairs asking my mom excitedly why she had a Barbie Dreamhouse in her closet.  I got lectured for going in her room and she told me it was for my one cousin’s birthday.  I was confused because we didn’t usually buy presents for the cousins (my mom was the youngest of 10 kids so we had tens of cousins).  I was so disappointed that the Dreamhouse wasn’t for me.

Weeks went by and Christmas was finally here.  I woke up excitedly Christmas morning just like I did every Christmas morning.  My sister and I waited at the top of the steps.  I think my one brother was just a baby and I don’t believe the other one was even born yet. We ran downstairs and right there in the middle of the living room stood a Barbie Dreamhouse tagged for both my sister and I.  I was so happy and I played with that thing for years.  I remember having mixed feelings when my mom finally decided to to sell it in my teens.  Knowing what I know now, it must have took quite a lot of saving and deal scouting for my parents to buy that. I’m glad I did spend years playing with it.  In my opinion it was probably the best Barbie Dreamhouse ever.  Very solid, working doors and windows, you could move the sections to get at different things.  Maybe they aught to make it again.

My dad was able to dig up the actual picture for me of the year we got our Barbie House.  I was holding Peaches n’ Cream Barbie, remember her?

  1. I would have loved to have that Barbie house. =) My parents didn’t have a lot of money either but like yours they made sure our Christmas was extra special. I also used to snoop in my parents room too to find where the presents were hidden lol. I wish now that I didn’t find them because it wasn’t a surprise anymore when I got them. .

  2. That Barbie house looks very similar to the one I had. I’m not positive if its the same one though! I do know that my sister and I loved playing with it!

  3. Oh my goodness! My favorite Christmas gift memory also involves a Barbie Dream house and Peaches N’ Cream barbie! She was seriously the best dressed Barbie EVER! Santa tricked us and put all our toys in the basement that year (mostly because we all got something huge) and so when we woke up and saw nothing under the tree upstairs, we were so bummed and thought for sure we had just been naughty…little did we know it was going to be the best Christmas ever. 😉

    1. I agree Peaches N’ Cream barbie was one of my favorite barbies. I loved her dress and I remember she had this wrap or whatever you want to call it the you could attach in different ways to make her dress look different.

    1. I actually found some on Ebay and seriously considered buying one after I wrote this post. My daughter is a bit young for it though (18 months)

    1. I got a barbie vette for my birthday one year It wasn’t the actual barbie Mattel vette but a generic one. It was silver and black. I still loved it

  4. WOW, now that’s one of the real doll houses from back in the day, man what great memory and I love the picture. I know every girl at that age always had a doll house on their list, I know I did.

  5. This is awesome what Walmart is doing. My lil sister had the Barbie Dream house when she was little. I remember get a doll house that was made of wood piece we had to put together. It was amazing and the fact we had to build everything in it plus the house made more amazing. Thanks for sharing.

  6. What a great memory, and photo too! Makes me want to reminisce over Christmas in years past! I remember the excitement of Christmas morning 🙂

  7. What an awesome story! It brings back so many memories. I totally had that Peaches N’ Cream Barbie too! Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

  8. We made a visit to Holiday Toyland, and it was lots of fun. I remember Peaches n Cream Barbie! I just loved her dress. I think this year I may get a dollhouse for my daughter.

  9. My daughter really wanted it when she was younger, but as the holidays approached it all changed.. I did get a commodore 64 one year..

  10. How cool to have a toy that you played with for years 🙂 And so lovely that you have a photo of it. Really fun share …

  11. Wow! What that is a dream house. We got a barbie house for our girls last year and it looks nothing like that one! I am glad it holds such great memories!

  12. I would have loved that house when I was a kid, heck i’m sure I would love playing with it now. very cool.

  13. What a fantastic gift! I would have been screaming out of joy and excitement if I were you.

  14. My daughters had that Barbie house. I bought it a discount store like Salvation Army. What a wonderful surprise!

  15. What a nice picture to remember it by! This year I am planning to make a “barbie house” for my daughters. I didn’t have one growing up, and I always wanted one – I’m really hoping that they will love it like you loved yours.

  16. I know where you are coming from on this. I love everything Barbie and had my own HUGE Barbie abode. When my girls got to that age they did too. We also got them a HUGE hand built doll house. It was so loved that it is still in my attic. Trouble is, I have two grandsons. I had the 3 year old upstairs with me and he saw it. He now thinks he needs it downstairs to play with. I told him ok, as soon as we get rid of the huge cars, trains, racetrack, etc….
