When a murder case from the past heats up again, it’s up to Marley McKinney to sort through a tall stack of suspects in the latest Pancake House Mystery. . . Although it’s a soggy start to spring in Wildwood Cove, the weather clears up just in time for the town to host an amateur chef competition. Marley McKinney, owner of the Flip Side pancake house, already signed up to volunteer, and chef Ivan Kaminski is one of the judges. But when Marley visits her landscaper boyfriend Brett at the site of the Victorian mansion that’s being restored as the Wildwood Inn, she discovers something else pushing up daisies: human remains. The skeleton on the riverbank washed out by the early- spring floodwaters belonged to eighteen-year-old Demetra Kozani, who vanished a decade earlier. While the cold case is reopened, Marley must step in when some of the cook-off contestants fall suspiciously ill. Stuck in a syrupy mess of sabotage and blackmail, it falls to Marley to stop a killer from crêping up on another victim. . . Add to GoodreadsAmazon * Apple * B&N * Google * Kobo * Kensington

The last diners of the day left the restaurant shortly after two o’clock, and I locked the door
behind them, flipping the “open” sign to “closed.” Leigh Hunter, The Flip Side’s full-time waitress,
untied her red apron from around her waist. Patricia Murray’s daughter, Sienna, did the same with
her apron. Sienna was seventeen and still in school, but she worked at the pancake house on the
weekends.
“Did you know that Logan’s entering the amateur chef competition?” I asked Sienna.
“Yep. He’s a really good cook. He got into watching cooking shows about three years ago,
and now he can make some really amazing stuff.”
“I hope he does well in the competition,” Leigh said.
“He will,” Sienna said with confidence. “My friend Ellie Shaw’s entering too. She didn’t really
want to, but her mom thought she should.”
“Why didn’t she want to?” I asked.
“She’s kind of shy. I don’t think she likes the idea of cooking in front of an audience.”
“Maybe she’ll forget anyone’s watching once she gets cooking,” Leigh said.
“I hope so. She’s really talented, especially with desserts.” Sienna headed for the break room
to fetch her jacket, and soon she and Leigh had left the pancake house for the day.
Talking about cooking made me wonder if Brett would be finished work by dinnertime. I sent
him a text message asking him how things were going. I tidied up the pancake house while waiting
for his response. It came about half an hour later. He figured he’d have to work until six o’clock, but
he hoped he wouldn’t have to stay at the inn any longer than that.
Hungry? I wrote in another text. I can bring you a snack.
I love you, was his quick response.
Smiling, I finished up my remaining tasks and grabbed a can of soda from the kitchen before
heading out. I walked to Marielle’s Bakery and picked up two doughnuts and half a dozen chocolate
chip cookies. From there, I set a course for home. The Wildwood Inn sat on the outskirts of town,
and making the trip on foot would have taken a while, so I decided to make a quick stop at home to
pick up my car.
After checking on my cat, Flapjack, and Brett’s dog, Bentley, I set off in my hatchback. When
I reached my destination, I followed a long driveway toward the beautiful white Victorian mansion
and continued along the branch that led around the house to the large detached garage, built in the
same style as the inn. I parked my blue hatchback next to the cube van Brett used for his lawn and
garden business.
With the paper bakery bag and soda can in hand, I wandered around the garage until I could
see clear to the back of the inn’s property. An expanse of green lawn stretched from the mansion to
a white gazebo—a
new addition, Brett had told me. Beyond the gazebo, flagstone pathways wandered around
numerous flower beds. Brett had been working hard to add some color before the garden party. He’d
already transplanted numerous types of flowers in a variety of hues and would add more over the
coming days. Some of the flower beds farther back in the garden were home to recently planted
rosebushes, which would bloom in a few weeks’ time.
As soon as I started across the lawn, I spotted Brett near the back of the property, working
away at one of the last flower beds, only a stone’s throw from the woods that bordered the garden.
There was a small cottage in the back corner of the lot, but I couldn’t see anyone else around. The
garden was peaceful, the only sound the chirping of birds in the trees.
I followed the flagstone pathway past the flower beds, raising a hand in greeting when Brett
looked up and saw me approaching.
“I come bearing food,” I said as I reached him.
He grinned and drove the spade he was holding into the soil so it would stand upright on its
own. “Best news I’ve heard all day.”
I glanced around the garden. “You’ve made a lot of progress since the last time I was here. It
looks great.”

“I need to work at a couple of other sites this week, but hopefully this job will be done in the
next two weeks.” He pulled off his work gloves and tucked them into the back pocket of his jeans.
“How was your day?”
“Great. Everything went well at The Flip Side. A lot of people were talking about the garden
party. They’re going to love what you’ve done here.”
“Hopefully Lonny and Hope will love it too,” he said.
“They will,” I said without any doubt. “They like what you’ve done so far, right?”
“So far so good,” he confirmed.
I held up the paper bag and can of soda. “Your snack.”
“Thank you. You’re the best.”
“I can’t say I was disappointed to have a chance to see you before tonight.”
He grinned. “I’m definitely not disappointed either.”
He led me to a stone bench at the end of the garden that faced the flower beds, the mansion
visible in the distance. I sat with him and snacked on one of the doughnuts while he devoured the
other one along with a couple of the cookies. When I’d finished eating, I rested my head against his
shoulder.
“It’s so peaceful here,” I said, listening to the birdsong coming from the woods behind us.
Brett took a long drink of his soda. “It’s definitely a nice place to work.”
I raised my head. “Speaking of which, I should probably let you get back to it.”
He eyed the rosebushes sitting in pots near one of the flower beds, waiting to be
transplanted. “Another two hours or so and then I’ll be heading home.”
I got to my feet and set the paper bag on the bench. “I’ll leave these here in case you want
more.”
Brett set down his soda can as he stood up. He took my hands, pulling me in close. “Thanks
for stopping by, Marley.”
He gave me a lingering kiss that I reluctantly pulled away from.
“See you later.”
I was about to set off along the garden path when something small and black streaked
toward the tree line. I spun around to follow its progress.
“A kitten!” I exclaimed. “Did you see that?”
The tiny black cat paused at the edge of the woods, its green eyes wide, one ear twitching
while the rest of its body remained frozen.
“Does it belong to Lonny and Hope?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” Brett said. “I caught a brief glimpse of it earlier today, but that’s the first time
I’ve seen a cat around here.”
I took a careful step toward the kitten. It dashed beneath a bushy fern and hunkered down,
out of sight except for the tip of one black ear.
“It looks way too tiny to be out here on its own,” I said.
“We can take it up to the house and see if that’s where it belongs. If we can catch it, that is.”
As if it had heard Brett’s words, the little kitten darted out from its hiding place and zipped
away, deeper into the woods.
“Catching it might not be possible, but I don’t want to leave it in the woods. Maybe we can at
least get it to run back this way.”
“We can try,” Brett agreed.
We moved off in opposite directions, planning to circle around into the woods and hopefully
herd the kitten back to the garden. I tried to move quietly as I entered the woods, not wanting to
scare the cat farther into the forest. Despite my efforts, twigs still snapped under my feet and the
underbrush rustled as I picked my way through the trees.
I could hear rushing water somewhere nearby and realized we were close to the Wildwood
River. My concern for the kitten shot up. Although the water level was on its way down now, the river
was still higher than usual and could be dangerous for anyone who got too close to the slippery,
unstable banks. I didn’t want the kitten going anywhere near the water.

As I moved deeper into the forest, the dirt beneath my feet became soggier. Through the
trees, I caught sight of the river, still swollen and muddy, hurtling its way toward the ocean. I swept
my gaze from left to right, desperately seeking out any sign of the kitten.
“Can you see it?” I called out to Brett when he came into view. We were almost to the river
now, and I had to talk over the sound of the rushing water.
“Not yet,” Brett called back.
At the sound of his voice, something moved slightly a few feet away. I peered at a small,
hollowed-out cavity at the base of an old tree. It was dark inside the hole, but I was certain I’d seen
movement. I crept closer
to the tree, moving slowly and cautiously.
I was about to crouch down in front of the hole when the kitten darted out of the hollow tree. I
dropped to my knees and grabbed at the kitten, ending up flat on my stomach, my arms outstretched
ahead of me. A fallen tree branch poked at my ribs, cold moisture was seeping through my jeans,
and I had a face full of ferns, but I also had a wriggling kitten in my grasp.
“Are you okay?” Brett asked as he hurried over to me.
“I caught it!” I said through the ferns.
I couldn’t see too well, but I heard Brett reach my side. One of his hands brushed against
mine.
“I’ve got it. You can let go now.”
I released my firm but gentle hold on the cat and climbed to my feet, brushing pine needles
and clumps of mud from my clothes. I smiled at the sight of Brett holding the little kitten against his
chest, but when I reached down to brush a clod of mud from my knee, my smile slipped away.
“Brett…”
“Are you hurt?” he asked with concern.
I shook my head and stepped back before pointing at the ground.
Next to the patch of ferns I’d landed in, a partial human skull poked out through the mud.

I love a good cozy mystery. I had the pleasure of reading another book in The Pancake House Mysteries and I was hooked. When this one came up for review I had to do it. The main character, Marley, seems to be an amateur sleuth at heart. The setting of Wildwood Cove is described beautifully in the book and takes me away to a quiet little beach town.

Marley is always stumbling onto something that gets her involved in a crime scene. This time it’s the skull she finds while trying try to catch a stray kitten. The book leaves you guessing who the real killer is until your suspecting multiple people in the book until the last few chapters.

I fell in love with the characters and the setting in this series. It was nothing for me to read until I was dead tired but still push to at least finish the chapter. Another think I like about this series is there’s romance without it being too much.

When Cordelia Castel isn’t riding dragons or trying on glass slippers, she’s writing tales about heroines who wield weapons, defeat the villain and save the prince all in time for the ball.
Cordelia is the author of two young adult series: The Seven Kingdoms: an action-packed, Young Adult series where all the fairytale heroes and villains exist, and it’s next generation, Dragon Mage Academy, set in the same world.

We stood on a grassy, outdoor terrace of verdant greens brightened by the afternoon sun. It stretched about twenty feet in
width and ran all around the mountain. On our left was a grass-covered mountainside with the same vegetation growing
beneath our feet. The terraces below were even wider, some growing fruit trees, others crops. They stretched out in an
endless stream of green, and several levels below, stood cattle grazing on the grass.
My breath caught. The landscape reminded me a little of home, but instead of an expanse of fields and forests stretching for
leagues, we were on the side of a mountain in full view of the surrounding scrubland.
‘This is level one of Mount Fornax’.€ He pointed upwards. ‘€œThe reception building is a level up.’
It was difficult to see the surface of the mountain from where we stood, although I did catch glimpses of tree branches.
Phoenix strode ahead, gesturing to the left wall. ‘Each dragon has their own spacious stall, and everyone gets a good view of
the skies. The stalls also link to a communal area in the hollow of the mountain.’
I continued after him and stopped at a giant opening in the wall. A crocodile-green dragon lounged deep within a cavern,
resting its head on folded arms. Shadows obscured most of its features except for a thick, serpentine scale adorned with
horns.
‘What a lovely dragon.’ I reached my hand out, only to meet an invisible barrier. ‘Ouch!’
The tip of its tail flicked at me, and I hurried away.
We continued over the terrace. ‘How many dragons live in Mount Fornax?’
Phoenix rubbed the back of his head. ‘That depends on how you define a dragon. Including eggs and cocoons, I suppose we
have about seven hundred.’
I was about to ask what he meant about cocoons, but an ear-piercing roar shook me to the marrow. My head snapped to the
side, and I stared into another stall. The dragon lying inside widened slitted, scarlet eyes that seemed to reach into my soul.
Each eye was as big as my head, and the dragon’s head was as high as I was tall. My breath caught, and I stilled, not
taking my eyes off the massive predator.
‘How friendly!’ said Ivan from up ahead.
This dragon looked nothing like Aunt Cendrilla’s steed, Fogo. Its face was shaped like that of a lion, with a regal snout
and emerald green scales instead of fur. Where there would have been a mane, scale-covered horns, each as long as my legs,
curved back from the top of its head. Olive-colored horns protruded from its lower jaw.
When the dragon rose to its feet, it did so with the grace of a giant cat, but its body reminded me of the iguanas that dwelled
on the tropical forest region of Bluebeard Mountain. It stood on thick, muscular legs with forearm-length claws splayed out
for balance.
‘Ah,’ replied Phoenix. ‘That’s the dragon I caught lurking around the courtyard.’
‘The..’Words caught in my throat. I coughed. ‘The one who killed Mr. Jankin?’
‘€œNo one else could have done it.’ Phoenix walked back and stood next to Ivan.
‘Madam Maritimus’ security witches accounted for the whereabouts of all the others.’
I shook my head. Although whatever caused the fire was hot enough to turn a man and his desk into char, something still
didn’t add up. ‘This dragon could never have fit through the hallways, let alone the doors.’
The green dragon tilted its head to the side, its eyes seeming to track our every word.
‘Jankin’s office had a skylight,’ replied Phoenix.
Ivan nodded. ‘That makes sense. The dragon could have blasted poor Mr. Jankin from above.’
Phoenix didn’t reply for a long time, then he raised a shoulder. ‘€œI wouldn’t exactly describe Jankin in such sympathetic
terms, but I suppose even he didn’€™t deserve a fiery death.’
A rush of anger filled my chest and seared my cheeks. How unfeeling! I was about to comment, when a female voice filled
my ears. ‘€œI’m innocent!’

The Singular Adventures of Jefferson Ball Book Tour & Giveaway

The Singular Adventures of Jefferson Ball
by David Perlmutter
Genre: YA SciFi Fantasy
There never was a heroine like Jefferson Ball. And, thankfully, there may never be.
She is, simply, the most powerful humanized female dog in a universe full of them. Faster, stronger, more attractive to boys. Unbeatable as a lover. Unfortunately, her brains are not up to this quality, but don’t tell her that.
About the only one who can is Major Hamilton Pomeranian, the diminutive ex-soldier who is Jeff’s best friend and conscience. When she gets too big for her limited clothing, Hamilton tells her what for. And it’s usually only after that point that they are able to escape from whatever convoluted situation they find themselves in.
This potential collection will have readers both laughing and awestruck at the events that happen. And, hopefully, you will be one of them.
David Perlmutter is a freelance writer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He is the author of America Toons In: A History of Television Animation (McFarland and Co.), The Singular Adventures Of Jefferson Ball (Amazon Kindle), The Pups (Booklocker.com), Certain Private Conversations and Other Stories (Aurora Publishing), Honey and Salt (Scarlet Leaf Publishing), The Encyclopedia of American Animated Cartoon Series (Rowman and Littlefield, forthcoming) and Orthicon; or, the History of a Bad Idea (Linkville Press, forthcoming).

Jefferson Ball was drunk.
She was also, for good measure, scotched, tipsy, pickled, loaded, smashed, lit, hammered, jonesed,
stoned, tippled, bashed, pixilated, looped, high as a Georgia pine, gassed, Harvey-wallbangered, flipped,
up-set, just drinkin’, salted, hard-boiled, fried and [insert your own term for inebriation here. There are
many to choose from.]
The most obvious evidence was that she, the most powerful human-shaped female dog in a universe

chock full of them, was lying face down on the floor of the bar she was in- one of many ignominiously-
styled establishments in her home town of Hugopolis. Clad only in her trademark monogrammed black

bikini and black boots, she seemed much more like a typical skid row derelict barfly, someone who had
long ago abandoned herself to the winds of fate, chance and alcohol, than the larger than life heroic- or,
as her enemies saw her, anti-heroic figure she truly was.
Jefferson Ball possessed many virtues, chiefly of the physical variety, that she was wont to exploit in
her favour, manipulative creature that she was. Fortunately for herself and the universe around her, she
used most of them in the service of her kind. Centuries of breeding and body conditioning among her
ancestors, coupled with some shady DNA and genetic manipulation at one point, had created, in
Jefferson, a creature possessed of astonishing physical abilities, among them the ability to run a four
minute mile in less than two, and powerful physical strength, enough to balance hundreds of thousands
of pounds on her fingertip alone. Not surprisingly, these abilities, plus a deadly accuracy with the whip
she always kept at hand, made her a very formidable opponent of the forces of evil, particularly all aliens,
robots, and other supernatural beings who thought they could outfox her in the speed and muscle
department, and especially those who employed those beings in a futile attempt to destroy her.
But, like most heroic types, she had an Achilles heel. Two, in fact- both of which she bore the scars of,
though less than you might think given her remarkable resiliency.
The first of these was the more obvious and the more hurtful to her reputation. Boys of her race- and
the males of any alien race she encountered- and plenty of them! In both the actual evidence known, and
her own personal Munchausian exaggeration of her abilities, she was, indeed, a formidable lover. Mata
Hari and Mae West had nothing on her! But, rather than experienced lovers, she preferred to initiate
virgins- especially fine young things- into the ways of the world. It was common for her, during her
adventures, to regularly slip out of a young male’s boudoir, having blown his genitals to smithereens

(metaphorically) with her own, more powerful ones, and to leave him permanently longing for her touch-
and/or cursing her to the heavens for tricking him into giving up his cherry for good.

As powerful and influential she was as a hero or lover, however, Jefferson had an equally colorful
reputation as a drinker- or, more accurately, a lush. When boys were not available, she drank, and, even
when they were, she drank. Socially and professionally, she drank as well, and this damaged her social
status as much as her being a lover of renown. For this reason, most beings of her gender, despite her
heroism, were reluctant to establish lasting friendships with her on two counts. She would, it was said,
either steal your “man” from you with her charms, good looks, and muscular, pneumatic physique, or she
would do so in a duplicitous way- by drinking you under the table!
It was at this point, almost on cue, that Jefferson’s sole female friend- indeed, the only friend of either
gender she truly had in the whole universe- entered the bar-room, spotted Jefferson sprawled on the
floor, put her paws on her hips, and exclaimed:
“So there you are!”

I’m so so glad I got these books to review. I actually had requested to only review the 1st book but I was sent both and I couldn’t be happier. I’m a sucker for a good paranormal romance. While the idea of a person that can talk to ghosts isn’t a new paranormal theme I love the setting, the characters, and the specific situations.

I honestly read the whole 1st book in one night, I couldn’t put it down. I was drawn in with the character of Riley. I found myself rooting for different characters and wondering what would happen to others. When I got to the end of The Morticians Daughter 1 foot in the grave I couldn’t believe it was the end. No No No what happened with Hayden? Will she share her secret? Will she ever go back with Jacob? I felt a strong need to know.

So I immediately start the Morticians Daughter 2 feet under. This one I have to break up over two days because…work. I find myself reading hungrily to find out the answers I need to know. While some questions are answered the 2nd book brings up even more questions. The book left me heartbroken and wanting more. So I immediately start looking to see if there is a book three. Please god tell me there is a book three or at least tell me it’s in the process of being written.
