The new UNICEF Market

I received a gift card to UNICEF Market in order to complete an honest review.  Any opinions expressed are my own. Giveaway is sponsored by Novica.

I’ve long been a fan of Novica.  You know the site that has handcrafted products from artisans all over the world.  They now have a sister site called UNICEF Market.  Many of the items available on the site are the beautiful products you see on Novica.  The difference is, when you purchase through the UNICEF Market, every order impacts children through UNICEF’s global program.  Purchases through the UNICEF market will help in area like improving access to clean water, education, vaccines, nutrition, and more.

Since I had my first (and only) daughter 2 years ago I have a list of things I couldn’t wait to buy when I had her. Things like a dollhouse, baby dolls, dresses (hey I had 3 boys first) a jewelry box, etc.  Don’t get me wrong, I had fun buying for my boys too but it’s a nice to buy some girly stuff for a change.  I was able to scratch one of those things off my list on the UNICEF Market.  I thought it fitting too since in buying a beautiful jewelry box for my daughter I would be helping someone else’s son or daughter in another country.

There were so many absolutely gorgeous jewelry boxes on UNICEF Market. Wooden, metal, glass, soap stone, whatever look you’re into.  UNICEF Market gave me a budget of $50 and I had a lot of nice choices in that price range. I ended up choosing the Repousse Brass jewelry box “Majestic View” I wanted something that was going to last, something pretty.  This definitely fit the bill with this jewelry box covered in glass beads.

This jewelry box was actually bigger than I expected which I was happy about.  I figured for the price, the materials, and the craftmanship it would probably only be big enough to put a necklace or two in and that’s it.  It’s not though, it will hold a nice amount of jewelry for my daughter.  I didn’t realize either until I saw it up close with the details.  It has brass charms attached to it like crescent moons, seashells, and little curls. I know this might sound odd but when I see a box like this I always think of it like that mysterious box in a movie.  You know the box that holds the special key or the box that contains antique treasures. No? Is it just me? Ok moving on…

I had to take a few pictures of the box just to show you that the artist did not skimp on the details by any means.

I wanted to show you the inside of the box.  It has a black velvet lining and a mirror inside the lid.  Since the lining is black it’s kinda hard to tell how deep the box is.  The mirror is almost the the size of the whole inside of the lid.

My daughter is only two so it’s not like she has a lot of jewelry yet.  I put her amber teething necklace in the box.  Now I’m thinking, “well I guess I have to buy her some more jewelry” lol.  Which by the way, UNICEF Market has lots of hand crafted jewelry as well. If you’re buying anything as a gift you can also have a free gift message sent with it.  You can even choose to have your gift wrapped for a few dollars more.

Gurin Pulse Oximeter GO-410 Review

I received the below mentioned product in order to complete an honest review.  Any opinions expressed are my own.  This post is not intended to give medical advice.

I work in a hospital and use Pulse Oximeters on a daily basis.  Working as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant it’s important to keep track of many of my patients’ oxygen levels and/or heart rate for one reason or another.  As a mom of a child with asthma, I’ve often thought how I should buy one to have at home.

I tend to get a bit jumpy when it comes to my son’s asthma. His asthma trigger is respiratory illnesses so October to March is prime time for asthma attacks for him.  As soon as I hear him breathing a little heavier I’m watching him like a hawk.  He’s been hospitalized twice in the past for his asthma and I don’t want to go there again.  With respiratory illnesses though sometimes that junky sound or heavier breathing can just be a part of the illness. Having a pulse oximeter at home can help me monitor him better and help me make a better decision on whether his inhalers are effective or if it’s time for a doctor’s visit or even ER visit.

The Gurin GO-410 Finger Pulse Oximeter is perfect for home use.  It’s portable, light weight, easy to store, easy to read, and easy to use. When you order it you’ll get the pulse ox device itself, a neck/wrist cord, case, and even 3 – AAA batteries that are required.

The Go-410 Pulse ox clips onto your finger and can fit a wide range of finger sizes.  It’s comfortable on the finger.  I was able to get a good reading on myself, my husband, and all 3 of my boys.  It didn’t work as well on my daughter’s finger.  She’s only 2 and has tiny fingers. Also, she wasn’t willing to sit with it on her finger.

You clip it on your finger and hit the gray “on” button.  It gave us all a reading within a couple seconds. It uses an OLED screen with a nice contrast so it’s easy to see the numbers on the screen.

This reading was on my 12 year old son’s finger.  It shows his blood oxygen saturation is 96% and his heart rate is 91.

Of course the key to my son’s asthma is trying to avoid triggers and staying on top it when it does occur.  We also have periodic visits with his pediatrician.  Having the pulse ox at home though is just a little peace of mind and helps me firm up my ER visit decisions.

Earn Extra Money With SurveySpot

This post is brought to you by SurveySpot.  Regardless I only post legitimate offers from trusted sites.

With so many survey sites out there it can be hard to weed through the good ones and the not so good ones.  When I first got out of college and then again when I was a single mom I was looking for ways to make extra money without taking too much time away from my kids.  I had a full-time job at the end and hadn’t really started my blog at that point. Survey sites because a way for me to earn a little extra money and choose when I wanted to do it.  I might work on some surveys during nap time or after I put them to bed at night.

You can guess I tried a few survey sites but SurveySpot was one I always found myself going back to.  It wasn’t just the extra money though, I got some satisfaction out of telling companies what i liked and didn’t like about their products.  I liked that fact that myself, an every day consumer, could have some say about what was showing up on my local stores shelves.
