I had never heard of Space Scouts before hearing from the US Family Guide.  I’m always interested in fun way to squeeze some education into my kids’ day.  Kids love getting mail, especially packages.  This one has lots of fun activities. I thought my 5 year old son might like to receive this so I had it sent to him.  At first when I opened the box he didn’t seem too enthused but as I pulled out more and more things he became more and more excited.

Let’s see if I can tell you everything that came in the Space Scouts kit:

  • metal lunch box
  • 2 astronaut figures
  • Space Scout character magnets
  • sticker puzzle
  • Grabber toy
  • Constellation card with metal clip to keep them together
  • Solar system poster
  • wikki sticks sample pack
  • word puzzle to decipher

Um I think I got everything.  Each month your child will get a different constellation card to add to their clip so they can find them in the night sky.  You can add sticker to the solar system posters as you learn new things in the solar system each month.  There are new puzzles and games each month too.  The Metal lunch box doubled as a play area for my son to play with his magnets and astronaut figures he got.  My son’s favorite thing in the pack was probably the grabber toy .   He did have fun putting the sticker puzzles together.  He wanted the poster hung up in his room too.

Holiday Guide 2014

A Box of Chocolates at Christmas Time

I received the below mentioned products as part of the US Family Guide blogger program.  Any opinions expressed are my own

Holiday Guide 2014

I’m the oldest of four children. My dad worked and my mom stayed at home until my youngest brother started middle school then she went to work as a baker for the school part-time.  When I was just a little girl my parents didn’t have a lot of money.  They always knew how to make a holiday special.  My mom made tons of homemade cookies. We got to taste one while she was baking them but the rest were frozen until Christmas Eve.  Christmas Eve we’d go to candlelight service at my mom’s church in the evening.  Then we’d come home to a huge spread of things like cookies, hickory farms sausage, cheese ball and crackers, a can of mixed nuts, and of course a box of chocolates.  They were never any expensive chocolates, usually just the cheapest big box they could find but it was good.  Later on, my dad got a job as a mailman.  He used to get treats from people on his route.  That became our spread. He’d get a lot of  nice treats from a lot of nice people on his route.

Til’ this day, Christmas Eve doesn’t feel right without having a table of treats to nibble on.  A box of chocolates is still one of the center pieces of that treat table.  Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Chocolates would be a welcome addition to our holiday treats.  This would also make a nice gift for someone.

It become obvious reading the Mrs. Cavanaugh’s story that chocolate was a family tradition.

“Time was when Marie Cavanaugh spent hours in her South Dakota farmhouse each Christmas season making pecan rolls and homemade chocolates for holiday gifting.

“It started when my aunt sent her pecan-rolls recipe,” Mrs. Cavanaugh recalled. “I gave the recipe my own touch and started making the yummy specialties. Then I began dipping chocolates. Our friends and neighbors loved these treats, encouraging me to start a candy business. Finally, I decided it might be a good idea.'”

Her husband George and children Carla, Lorraine, Calvin, Colene and Genise rallied, helping Mrs. Cavanaugh fill demands for her homemade sweets.

…In 1972, the family moved to Utah, leaving good friends and their beloved cattle ranch.

“It was a difficult decision, especially for George,” Mrs. Cavanaugh said. “He was excited about making our new venture, which we chose to call Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Candies, a great success.

We felt Utah was blessed with good chocolates and that we would enjoy – and could compete with – those who pride themselves on making excellent chocolates.”
Millions of pounds of chocolates later, Mrs. Cavanaugh’s candies have earned a reputation for unquestionable excellence….
Ask chocolate aficionados. They will direct those seeking the best chocolates to the popular Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Candies.”

I was asked to sample some of Mrs. Cavanaugh’s chocolate (twist my arm) and let you all know what I thought about it.  I received a 9 oz Most Famous Milk Chocolate box.  I also received 4 Mrs. Cavanaugh’s chocolate bars in 4 different flavors.

My family made quick work of this assortment.  Since my doctor put me on a low FODMAP diet right before the holidays (thanks doc) I claimed the Roasted Almond Dark Chocolate Truffle bar  because it was ok for me to eat.  Honestly it was soo good.  It’s a thick bar.  Just enough almonds in it to let you know it’s an almond bar.

Blog 003

My 10 year old claimed the Mindy Mint bar, my 5 year old claimed the Almond Coconut bar, and my oldest son dove right into the box .   I may have also sampled the raspberry milk chocolate candy in the box (don’t tell my doctor) The rasberry cream was so smooth and flavorful.  I really wanted to eat more but I already strayed off my diet so I figured I better not.  Once everyone got their pick there were about 6 or 7 candies left in the box.  My husband came home from work that night and finished off the box.  I didn’t know he did though until the next morning when I was telling him about it and he said “oh yea those are gone, I ate ’em” So, I’m guessing my husband like them too.

Get More Savings When You Buy Gift Cards At Giant Eagle #GE2xdip

This post is sponsored by Tatu Digital Media.  Any opinions expressed are my own.

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving and Black Friday is upon us.  This crept up on me so fast! I realize I still have to get a few odds and ends for Thanksgiving dinner and get my sister a gift for her birthday.  I made plans to stop at Giant Eagle tomorrow to pick up some pumpkin pie filling.  I realized I could pick up a gift card for my sister while I’m there too.  Then I realized…hey while I’m at it I should grab some gift cards for Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping and for any other gifts I was planning on giving.

Why buy gift cards at Giant Eagle instead of anywhere else? Well that reason is simple.  For every $50 I spend on gift cards at Giant Eagle I earn 20 cents off per gallon of gas.  You read that right 20 cents off per gallon.  I’ve seen some savvy Giant Eagle shoppers paying next to nothing for filling up after buying gift cards or doing their regular grocery shopping from Giant Eagle.  With the gas prices dropping across the US, that could mean some seriously cheap fuel ups for buying gift cards you were going to get anyway.

Another reason to get gift cards, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  Let me give you a for instance.  My son has an iPod Touch on his Christmas list.  I’ve been scoping prices and Best Buy has some good deals so I was planning on getting him the iPod Touch there.  I could buy $100 in Best Buy gift cards to buy that iPod touch and score 40 cents off per gallon (20 cents off for every $50 spent on gift cards). Yep, that’s really how it works.  They have tons of gift cards to choose from: Red Lobster, Amazon, GameStop, iTunes, and lots of others.

Dream Team Pets Review

I received the below mentioned product as part of the US Family Guide blogger program.  Any opinions expressed are my own.

Holiday Guide 2014

Do you have trouble getting your child to sleep through the night? Do they have a fear of the dark?  Do they wake easy? Dream Team Pets may look like a cute and soft stuffed animal that comes with a book but it’s really a sleep training tool.

dream team lion

My youngest son has his own room.  His older brothers share a room because it’s a much bigger room.  My youngest son used to be good about going to bed in his own room. Then they got into this “sleepover” thing where he’d want to sleep in their room.  I would let him about once a week but after a while he wanted to more and more.  I decided it wasn’t good because he needed to learn to sleep in his own bed.  The one day he told me he was “scared” in his room by himself which he had never said to me before.  I wasn’t sure if it was an excuse for a sleep over or if it was the truth.

When I was a little girl, I used to be afraid of the dark.  My dad used to line stuffed animals up around our bed and tell us (my sister and I) that they would protect us. It worked for the most part.  I wasn’t really sure how a Dream Team Pet would do much better than a regular stuffed animal.

The idea of a the Dream Team Pet is that they are “trained” to protect kids from nightmares and things.  The book tells about what they do and what your child has to do to protect them and make sure they have a good night sleep.  There’s a little pledge they do each night to remind “their pet” of what they are supposed to do.  Each pet comes with a certificate. When your child is able to sleep through the night without nightmares they get to put a sticker on the Dream Team Pet’s certificate of training.  Once they get 7 days in a row, your child’s pet is officially trained.  If your child does have  a nightmare or doesn’t stay in bed your child will know their Dream Team Pet still needs training. The responsibility is put on the Dream Team Pet rather than your child feeling like they did it.

My son got Mighty Lion to review.  He was soft to touch but firm enough for a good squeeze or cuddle.  Also able to sit up well to “guard” his bed..that’s what we did anyway.

2014 011

At first I don’t think my son was that into it.  I mean, he liked having a new stuff animal to cuddle but the routine of reading the book each night and then getting to put the sticker on the Dream Team Pet’s certificate is what really got him into it I think.  We talked about it . I’d ask him if his Dream Team Pet did a good job helping him sleep and he’d say yes.   This would make a great gift for a child that could use some help sleeping at night.

Cornelius Teether from Baby Banana Brush Review

I received the below mentioned product as part of the US Family Guide blogger program. Any opinions expressed are my own.
baby banana brush

I did an initial post for Baby Banana Brush just a couple weeks ago.  Baby Banana Brush was a mom created product that happened after a scary incident with a regular toothbrush.  She shares her story with us here:

The Baby Banana Brush Story:
A few years ago, my two-year-old grandson tripped and fell on his toothbrush as he was trying to brush his teeth. The traditional hard plastic toothbrush punctured the roof of his mouth and came within centimeters of entering his brain. As a mother of 8, I knew that this all-to-common occurrence of babies falling on hard toothbrushes should be preventable, but how? As these questions were on my mind, I discussed them with my daughter-in-law, who is a dental hygienist and with her insight the idea for a flexible infant toothbrush was born.

She taught me about the safety specifications we would need, such as a slight “C” shape to our brush. We brainstormed about ideas of fun things that might fit that “C” shape and came up with the Banana! I had some experience from previous products my company was developing with plastics and other materials. I consulted with several engineers and determined that 100% medical grade silicone would be the best material to serve our “flexible” needs.Next, I went to Taiwan – the silicone capital of the world – in 2004. There I met with the company that would eventually become our manufacturer. We had our toothbrush FDA registered, patented and tested with private labs. We knew we had created something unique – a flexible toothbrush and teether in one – which did not exist in the market at that time.

We launched our product at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists Convention in Washington, D.C. May 2008. There was lots of excitement for the product at this convention, and we began selling our toothbrush in pediatric dental offices and baby boutique stores.

My own daughter is 20 months old.  She’s to the point where she wants to do everything herself.  I’ve watched her gag herself a number of times using her regular toddler toothbrush.  She’ll run around with hers.  I’m a worry wart parent and my big fear was her tripping with it in her mouth and it goes down her throat.  Baby Banana Brush has several super cute and safer toothbrush and teether designs.  There is, or course, the original Baby Banana Brush but they also have other cute designs like the Cornelius teether, Baby Banana Octo-brush, and Baby Banana Sharky Brush.

We got to test out one of these super cute and safer toothbrushes.  We received the Cornelius Teether.

Blog 006

The Cornelius teether said it’s for infants 3-12 months.  Since my daughter was 20 months, I wasn’t sure if she would get the benefits from it.  She is still teething in the back.  It seems she keeps getting more and more teeth popping through.  I put some of her toddler training toothpaste on it. She seemed visually interested in it right off the bat.  I told her it was a toothbrush and she new just what to do.

She enjoyed chewing on this. I think it did feel good on the areas where teeth are still coming in.  For the amount of teeth she has though I still needed to use a regular toothbrush to give her teeth a good clean. I think this Cornelius style toothbrush would be better suited for younger babies with less teeth than my daughter has.  Still, this seem to be her favorite toothbrush.  She’s been carrying it around the house chewing on it. The soft design and wide handles makes me feel better about her running around with it compared to her regular toothbrush.

In case you’re wondering, Baby Banana Brush does have a toddler training toothbrush meant for babies over 12 months of age and the Sharky brush says it for up to 24 months.
