Things I Miss About Apartment Living

If you’re on the fence about renting an apartment vs buying a home I can tell you there are pros and cons to both.  When my first husband and I started a family we started renting first.  One reason was because he worked a job where, every time he got promoted, he’d be moved to a new area. And I’m not talking the next town over, one time it was a different state. So it really didn’t make sense for use to buy at the time.

There are benefits to apartment living. For one, you can find apartments in all different sizes and budgets and with or without amenities.  We lived in a small 2 bedroom apartment that wasn’t much initially but the landlord was nice and the rent was very reasonable.  It was a nice place for us to start.  It was quiet and not too busy so we had no complaints.

As our family grew we needed more space but we were still in the same situation with my husband-of-the-time’s job. We were doing better and got a large 3 bedroom apartment in Columbia, SC.  It had a fire place, central heat and air, vaulted ceilings, two bathrooms, the community itself had a gym, a pool, and a club house for resident events.  It was a much larger complex and not as quiet.

So what was it I liked about apartment living? Well here’s a break down:

  • Renters insurance is much cheaper than homeowners insurance
  • The variety of apartments available From cheap no frills apartments to beautiful apartments like these apartments in north bergen
  • If something needs fixed you just call the landlord no worrying about being home to meet the plumber or who to call if the roof is leaking.
  • Most reputable apartment complexes will maintain things like: the pool, insect prevention, landscaping, has some type of security, etc.
  • Great when you know you will only be in an area short term and aren’t sure when or where you want to settle into home ownership.
  • You don’t have as much maintenance to do.  Things like cutting the grass, weeding the gardens, shoveling the sidewalks and parking area, or exterior building work is usually handled by the apartment’s landlord.
