For the first time since Clark had met him, the Tinkerer stopped moving and looked at
him. Clark thought he saw a smirk on his face. “No, nothing you can do. Leave me.”
The traveling accountant tried another approach. “What about metal, can you use some
metal?”
There was no change in the inventor’s posture. “What do you want for it?”
“This time I don’t want anything. I just want to talk while you work.”
He looked sideways at Clark. “How much metal?”
“I’ll go get you a big chunk, like last time. How does that sound?”
The alien went back to work. “What do want to talk about?”
“Have you ever heard of an alien race called the Ascanti?”
For the second time in as many minutes, the Tinkerer stopped in his tracks. It was only a
momentary pause, but long enough to be an obvious reaction to Clark’s words. “No, never heard
of no Ascanti. Can’t help you. Talking done.”
Clark walked up to him with palms out in a pleading motion. “Never? In all of your
dealings with different species, you never even heard of this one?”
The Tinkerer waved all four hands. “No, never heard of accursed Ascanti.”
Clark turned his head away, looking into space. “Accursed . . . so you have heard of
them. They do exist.”
The inventor grimaced. “No more talk. You go now.”
“Wait a minute, I just want some information. They may be up to something on my
world. I have no idea who they even are. What can we do to get rid of them?”
The alien waved one of his hands again. “Move. Find another home. This one is lost to
you.”
