For frequent readers of my blog, you might already know that I’m a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant at a trauma hospital as my day job.  What does my job entail?  The shortest version is that I work with people after an accident or illness to get them back to being as independent as possible with things they do in a normal day.  That would include functional tasks like: brushing their teeth, getting dressed, getting out of bed, getting into the bathroom, or cooking as examples.  To a lot of us those all seem simple but for someone who just had a stroke, or has several broken limbs after an accident these tasks can be frustrating and even difficult.

As any work department does, we have budgets.  They try to get us the equipment we need but in a decent size hospital, equipment sometimes grows legs.  Canes seem to be a hot item and we do use them with our patients often.  I received the Sabi Sport All Terrain Cane.  It is light weight cane with a comfortable handle and air cushioned rubber based tip.

You can see they come in several different colors.  I’m going to quote a line from Sabi here because I like it: “SPORT takes its inspiration from those differently-abled athletes out there who take adversity in stride. For them, we designed an all-terrain, lightweight cane for those times when you need a little boost to hike that extra mile; climb that higher mountain; or camp that extra night.”  I think this cane would also be a good option for the small framed elderly patient since it is light weight but sturdy.

These canes are not adjustable and need to be bought to fit you.  Sabi has a helpful sizing chart available to help you pick the right cane for you or your loved one.

To measure for a cane you should have your arm at your side.  Have someone measure from your wrist to the floor  and this will give you the appropriate measurement. You want to be able to stand tall while using the cane and not hunched over.  You also don’t want it to high or it may not give you the support needed.

I’m 5’4″ so the small cane was the right choice for me.  I received the Sabi SPORT All-Terrain Cane in the olive color.  I plan on donating the cane to my hospital so it can be used with our patients.  It will get plenty of use there.  I liked the comfort of holding onto the cane. I tried walking around with it.  The air cushioned tip worked well to cushion when setting the cane down.  The cane is very light weight but sturdy.  For those that are concerned about BPA, this cane is BPA free.  They also have custom size available for an additional cost if your height doesn’t fit into the standard options available.  The cane tip is replaceable so if you end up wearing your tip out you can get another one.
