6 Tips to Save Money on Your Cancun Trip

This post is brought to you by Hipmunk

Traveling to Cancun can be very relaxing and exciting. With its beautiful beaches and warm breeze, the island is a perennial favorite destination for vacationers. There are several things you can do to save money on your trip. Helping people save money on hotels in Cancun is what sites like Hipmunk try to do. Here are six tips that you should keep in mind for your own vacation.

Hop on a Bus

The public buses are everywhere and they are reliable and cheap. Don’t hesitate to use them to get around the island, as they only cost around 50 cents or less.

Consider an All-Inclusive Package

While it is true that in some destination trips, piecing your trip together can save you money, the opposite is true for Cancun. Many all-inclusive packages combine your hotel, meals and all drinks, including alcoholic ones, in one price.

Be Mindful of Data Roaming Charges

Most cell phone plans will charge you steep fees for international data roaming, so make certain you take the time to turn off your data roaming on your cell phone. Only turn on data roaming if it is absolutely necessary to avoid unpleasant fees on your cell phone bill.

No Need for a Phrasebook

You don’t need to go out and purchase a phrasebook. It is easy to find workers who understand and speak English. While a phrasebook may not cost much, it’s one expense that is unnecessary for your trip.

Travel Light

Try to travel only using a carry-on bag. By choosing the right bag, you can take full advantage of the space while saving additional checked baggage fees. You can do so by choosing clothing that is lightweight and wrinkle-resistant, layering items to change up your look. Try to minimize the number of shoes you plan to bring, as shoes take up lots of space. Choosing to travel light can also save you the time you would otherwise spend waiting in line at the baggage claim area.

Use Credit Cards for Better Exchange Rates

Using credit cards can give you better rates of exchange for most transactions. Be aware that some credit card companies do charge foreign transaction fees, however. Think about getting a card like the American Express Platinum card or another similar one that does not charge such fees.

Following these simple tips can help you save money on your next vacation. Remember to relax and plan ahead to gain the best vacation experience while also saving money.

When You Have To Make The Decision About Nursing Homes

When I was asked about writing this sponsored post I thought I could offer a different perspective of thought from the healthcare professional. If you’ve been around here for a while you might know that my day job is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.  I work in an acute care hospital.  Before that I had worked at a few Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF) commonly referred to as Nursing homes.   A part of my job is to help the patient and family decide the safest place to go after discharge from the hospital to work towards a patient’s goals.  Of course almost everyone wants to go home but it’s not always possible.

Some factors that could inhibit a person’s direct discharge to home after hospital admissions could be (trust me these are only a few common ones and there are certainly many more)

1.  Amount of care needed.  Even if they were doing well before, circumstances that brought them to the hospital could be life changing not just for the patient but for the people around them.  Devastating diagnosis such as a dense stroke, moderate or severe head injury, or even a hip fracture could require someone to need 24/7 care and not everyone can do that.  Your loved one can’t care for themselves.

2.  Type of care needed.  Perhaps it’s not the amount of physical assist need but rather the loved one’s cognitive status doesn’t allow them to be at home safely by themselves maybe because of Dementia, brain injury, or stroke.  Or maybe they’ll need ongoing medical care that only a trained nurse can provide such as IV antibiotics or specialized wound care.

3.  Temporary placement for therapy purposes or until appropriate accommodations can be made at home.  There are plenty of people in my line of work that, because of insurance (or lack of) or the level of care needed, don’t qualify to go to a rehabilitation center or short term rehab center. Often people think of a Skilled Nursing Facility as a place someone goes to stay but that’s not always the case.  In fact, the SNF I worked at before working at the hospital had a whole wing set aside for short-term rehab patients.  They may only stay for a week or two or a month or 2.  Also, we had patients that would stay periodically for respite care.

4. Not having family nearby that can help.  Maybe there’s children but they all live out of state or over an hour’s drive from them.  Perhaps they were the caregiver for their spouse but now they need some help themselves.  Maybe there is family close but they are often out of town for work or already caring for another family member.

Sometimes a loved one may need special accommodations to be able to live safely at home but you need time to have a ramp built so they can enter the home, install grab bars in the bathroom, or make their home livable on one floor if they have a two story house.  You may also need to line up caregivers or coordinate with family for care of the patient.

As I said there could be a lot of reasons why someone would choose or need to go to a Skilled Nursing Facility.  Once you’ve made that decision, the next question might be, “But which one?”

question mark

Working at the hospital I’m not allowed to recommend specific facilities.  I can’t say “oh yea nursing home A is wonderful but I heard nursing home C is not very good”.  The truth is no matter what care facility you look into there are always people that will praise it and people that will put it down.  To start your search you could check out a site like BestNursingHomes.com

bestnursinghomes

If I’m going to pick apart the site, Here are some things I like:

1.  Non-profit – to me this is important.  I wouldn’t want to be choosing from a list just because they paid to be there.  I would want to know my REAL options. It’s run by Association of Skilled Service Providers which is a non-profit that educates the public about skilled nursing care.

2.  Approved by Medicare as one of the top in the country – so it’s not just some dude in a cubicle saying “hey this one looks nice, oh look a pool!”

3.  No Personal Info to Enter – I don’t want to be looking for info on a serious matter like this and have some salesman calling and hounding me about facility A because, while nice, “facility A” might not be affordable or maybe “facility B” is just too far away.

4.  You Can Contact the Nursing Care Center Personally – you don’t have to go through an agent.  You can actually talk to the administrator, set up a tour of the facility, ask whatever question you might have.

5.  You Can See What Other Have to Say About It – read real consumers opinions on the facilities you might be interested in

Best Nursing Homes has been made possible by the generous donation of North American Health Care and its CEO, John Sorensen. John has made it his life’s work to serve the elderly population and has sponsored the development of BNH and donated it to the ASNP for use. “We are very grateful for the leadership of John Sorensen in the post-acute care industry,” said Amy Osmond Cook, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Association for Skilled Nursing Providers. “John is a leader in his field, a generous philanthropist, and a great example of someone who places serving the patient above anything else. We are proud to be associated with John and North American Health Care and grateful for his support to promote best practices in skilled nursing.”

The First Time I’ve Regretted Switching to WordPress Self-Hosting

I have to say, this post is more of a frustration post. I was on blogger for years. I finally worked up the courage to transfer to wordpress self-hosting so I could own my site. Keep in mind I have little to no technical knowledge when it comes to coding, design, etc. I was a bit intimidated at first. Definitely a different set up than blogger. One of the main reasons I was afraid to switch is because, on blogger, if something was messed up, Google fixed it. On WordPress, I’m on my own. I managed to go for about an year and a half with no issues. That streak ended the last month or so.

broken computer

It started with the new WordPress 4.2.2 update. Which by the way I still don’t have. I’ve never had an issue updating wordpress. I hit the little update button and bam, done. I’ve updated plugins, no problem. I tried to update WordPress 4.2.2 and my world came crashing down. Or at least my site is falling apart, my little online world.

I get this message: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 261904 bytes) in D:\Hosting\11973378\html\wp-admin\includes\file.php on line 159 I had no idea what to even do with that info. So I’m thinking I’ll just call my hosting company. It’s obviously a hosting problem. I tried to read up on it and found that some of my plugins could be eating some of my memory. Went in to delete plug ins, couldn’t do it. Said I needed to connect to my server. When I tried it just booted me back to the homepage. Every time. First call to my hosting company, The lady was very nice. She tried several things for me. She had me on hold a short while. She got back on and apologized to me. Told me that there is a problem with my specific server. They were aware of it and were working on it.

2 days later still issues. Though, now I was at least able to get in to delete, update, and add plug ins. Thought great, it must be fixed. But I noticed a new problem. My visual editor won’t work. The tab is there but all the buttons are gone and I can’t type in the body field. So for this post I’m in the text editor which is a big pain in the tushy for someone like me. Since I could update plugins I tried the wordpress update again. I again got the memory error message. So I try to get on the chat help with my hosting company again. There is a horribly long wait. Said they are experiencing high volumes. Try to call. Well I just didn’t want to call. I waited. Told the guy about the message. He upgrades my server memory for me but tells me they are still working on my particular server issues. He has no time frame to give me of when it may be fixed.. Happy that he upgraded my memory but starting to worry what the problem is and when it will be fixed. So I happily go back to my site to try to update wordpress again. He upgraded my memory, I should be fine right? Wrong, still the same exact message, byte size and all.

By day 4 I still can’t use my visual editor. Still can’t update wordpress but now notice my side bar disappears when posts are clicked on. It’s present in the home page and other pages but not posts. I have no idea how to manually update wordpress. I’m afraid to even try. I’ve tried seeking help on wordpress forums but they may as well be speaking Japanese to me because I have little to no idea what they are saying. So today I make another desperate attempt to contact my hosting company. This time (first time ever in all my years of dealing with them) the customer service person on the other end is not helpful. In fact, he’s a bit condescending and tries to tell me I need something that I don’t actually need. He upgrades my memory yet again but tells me it’s at it’s max and that the hosting I have may not be a fit for my site and I may have to move to a vps server. He tells me I should contact my web developer for help. Dude, if I had a web developer I would not be talking to you. Again I seek help in the wordpress forums where they confirm the guy was trying to sell me something I don’t need. Here’s the thing, I get it if you can’t help me. If it’s not a hosting issue, just tell me that. Please don’t try to take advantage of my ignorance.

curse words

I’ve watched youtube videos to try to, at the very least, get my visual editor working. I found a great understandable video. I was able to put in the line of code that they suggested. Nothing happened. Absolutely nothing happened.

So I try to back up my wordpress site with a SIMPLE back up plugin. I used one that several had suggested. I added the plug in, activated it. It’s supposed to be a simple …hit the button, it starts backing up. NOTHING. I’m at a point where I can’t decide if I need a beer, a baseball bat, or to hire someone to fix my site. Since I don’t make much money here I’m seriously contemplating the beer and I’m not one to reach for alcohol.

For the first time since I switched to self-hosting I’m regretting the switch. I know it’s opened up more doors for me, I know if I can get it working again I’ll be happy. But, I have no idea who to consult and if I can even afford to consult someone. Anyone else running into this issue? Any suggestions? I’m seriously at my wits end with this.
