Chocolate for Christmas from Mrs. Cavanaugh’s

I wrote this post as part of the US Family Guide Blogger program. I will be receiving a box of chocolate for this post. Any opinions expressed are my own
Holiday Guide 2014

When I was growing up we always had lots of treats around the house at Christmas.  My mom would start baking a month to 6 weeks before Christmas and put them in the freezer until Christmas Eve.  My mom was an excellent baker.  We almost always had a large box of chocolates too . We’d go to church Christmas Eve night.  After the candlelight vigil we’d come home and all the treats would be brought out: cookies, candies, nuts, and a big box of chocolates.  We always got the cheaper chocolates and never had anything fancy but now, I feel like something is missing if we don’t have a box of chocolates for Christmas.

A story about Mrs. Cavanaugh’s chocolate.  Time was when Marie Cavanaugh spent hours in her South Dakota farmhouse each Christmas season making pecan rolls and homemade chocolates for holiday gifting.

“It started when my aunt sent her pecan-rolls recipe,” Mrs. Cavanaugh recalled. “I gave the recipe my own touch and started making the yummy specialties. Then I began dipping chocolates. Our friends and neighbors loved these treats, encouraging me to start a candy business. Finally, I decided it might be a good idea.'”

Her husband George and children Carla, Lorraine, Calvin, Colene and Genise rallied, helping Mrs. Cavanaugh fill demands for her homemade sweets.

…In 1972, the family moved to Utah, leaving good friends and their beloved cattle ranch.

“It was a difficult decision, especially for George,” Mrs. Cavanaugh said. “He was excited about making our new venture, which we chose to call Mrs. Cavanaugh’s Candies, a great success. We felt Utah was blessed with good chocolates and that we would enjoy – and could compete with – those who pride themselves on making excellent chocolates.”

Millions of pounds of chocolates later, Mrs. Cavanaugh’s candies have earned a reputation for unquestionable excellence….

No One Tell My Hubby About LG OLED at Best Buy…K? Deal?

The reviewer has been compensated in the form of a Best Buy Gift Card and/or received the product/service at a reduced price or for free
Holiday Guide 2014

It was only about a year after we were married and living in our house.  We had a regular old 32″ tv.  Nothing wrong with it.  I had no desire for anything else.  Well hubby did, he wanted a flat screen tv, no less than 50″ he says.  We had discussions about “Do we really NEED a new tv?”  and the likes.  That year my hubby got a bonus at work as well as some back pay owed to him.  He looked at me and said “I’m going to look at TV’s” So we went TV shopping. Choices LED, HD, Plasma, (at the time) what to do we get.  We ended up with 52″ flat screen HD LED.  Very nice tv.  I didn’t think we needed it but I definitely enjoy it. The kids and hubby have no complaints. We’ve had it for years now.  I thought he’d be happy with it for years, then the Best Buy placed the LG OLED TV ad in my lap.

Best Buy LG OLED Display

The description of this TV that I’m trying to keep under wraps from my hubby goes like this:

“The stunning design of LG OLED TV is only 0.21″ thick at its thinnest point. Picture quality is spectacular, with Infinite Contrast that ranges from the most blazing whites to the deepest blacks. And, LG’s exclusive 4 Color Pixel technology delivers bright, vibrant colors. Your first kiss. A baby’s first steps. The majesty of a desert sunset. Some things in life defy all explanation and must be experienced to be believed. Such is the case with LG’s latest display technology. With deeper and richer colors, stunning contrast and ingeniously curved screens, it is unlike any technology you’ve ever seen, and it delivers a picture that exceeds your wildest imagination”

Seriously, Best Buy?  Now my hubby’s going to want this.  I saw the pics, the cool curved screen, the pictures that make your eyes pop out of your head. Well you can see the LG OLED TV for yourself here: LGOLEDatBestbuy.com  This TV is available at Best Buy for $3499.99 which saves you $500 when you buy it at Best Buy.

As an early shopper I’ve already been in Best Buy a few times for my holiday shopping.  One son wants an iPod touch, another wants a new phone, the youngest wants Zoomer the Dino, the two oldest want Beats Headphones.  The next time I walk into Best Buy I’m tempted to check this TV out…without the hubby in tow because I’m afraid we’ll be scheduling a delivery if he goes with me.  I can see my hubby justifying it now ..”That TV in the game room is on it’s last leg, we could put the flat screen in the game room and put this TV in the living room.  The kids watching WWE on this…wow they’d go nuts!” (The kids are usually my selling point and he knows it).  Ugh, anyway, no one tell my hubby ok?

Old Factory Candle Gift Set Review

I received the below mentioned product at no cost, in order to complete an honest
review. Any opinions expressed are my own.
Giveaway is sponsored by Old Factory Candles.

There are a lot of candle companies out there. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which ones are worth spending the money on and which ones aren’t.  What makes one candle company stand out from the crowd.

I love candles.  There are certain things I look for in a candle.  I generally prefer soy wax.  I make my own candles and choose soy wax over other wax blends.  It makes a cleaner burn (less soot).  I want it to smell good without being so strong it gives me a headache and not be so weak I don’t even realize it has a scent.  Third, I like variety.  Sure vanilla and lavender are nice but every now and then I want to smell chai tea or champagne.  Just sayin’.

Old Factory Candles are the candle type that I look for.  They are made of natural soy wax, have some unique scents, hand poured in the USA, and come in fun themed gift sets that are perfect for gift giving.

As you can see, I chose the Winter Wonderland gift set to review.  The Winter Wonderland gift set included: Hot Cocoa, Roasted Chestnut, and First Snow.  I tend to lean towards fresh scents and bakery scents in the winter so this definitely fit the bill.  Each candle is 2 oz. There are no color to the candles, they’re all white.  I lit the hot cocoa candle first.  After being lit for about 20 minutes the scent of chocolate started creeping across the kitchen and gradually into the dining room. After burning for an hour, the scent followed me up the steps.  Seriously I could smell it upstairs!

The next day I tried the roasted chestnut scent.  In the jar it had a woodsy scent.  You could smell the nutty scent, a little fresh, sort of reminded me of being in the woods on a rainy day.   I hoped that scent would carry as it was lit as well. This one took a little longer for the scent to creep it’s way through the house.  BUT of all three of the scents, this one was probably my favorite.

Old Factory Candle review

Whether I had the candles burning for 30 minutes or 2 hours they burned evenly and clean.  These are high quality candles. Old Factory Candle Gift Sets are available on Amazon.  You can choose from a number of different scent themes.  I chose the Winter Wonderland gift set because I wanted a holiday set but I wanted something different than your normal peppermint and Christmas tree. If you’d rather that, they do have a Happy Holidays gift set with those scents in it.  I was torn, there was another set I really wanted. The Romance gift set had rose petals, champagne, and dark chocolate scents.  Sounded like heaven to me.  I’ll admit, the “high as a kite” set actually intrigued me because it was so different.  Ended up venturing the way of the holiday scents though.  I’m not disappointed, nope, I just have more things added to my Amazon wish list, that’s all.

If you want to buy them as a gift, don’t forget to choose the gift wrap option for just a couple dollars more. You can have the gift sent right to your recipient already wrapped with your own personal message. :
