A lifelong resident of northern New Jersey, Dawn Altieri has been scribbling stories practically since birth. After reaching a milestone birthday (she won’t say which one), she figured it was about time she took a shot at writing professionally. With an overactive imagination and a slightly twisted mind, she enjoys reading dark and dangerous tales almost as much as writing them. When she’s not curled up on the sofa with her laptop, her latest story, a box of chocolates and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day), she can be found volunteering in the world of animal rescue. To keep a roof over her head, she works in the printing industry as a graphic production artist. She shares her home with her husband and daughter, and a menagerie of rescued fur-babies. Emma made her way through the crowded sidewalks toward her apartment, struggling to
balance the plants, her groceries, and her purse. She could grab a cab, but at the rate traffic was
moving, she’d make it home faster if she walked. Maybe that wasn’t the best decision with
everything she had to carry, but New York City was alive with people enjoying the warmest
evening spring had offered so far. The fresh air carried a promise of invigoration and renewal she
desperately needed.
The sky took on an orange glow as the sun dipped between skyscrapers. As she traversed
the last few blocks toward her apartment building, darkness settled in more quickly than she’d
expected. She headed up the steps to the building’s entrance and shifted everything to one arm so
she could access the keypad next to the door with the other hand.
“Need help with that?”

She turned at the odd, raspy sound close behind her, like that of a man trying to disguise
his voice. A tall, muscular figure emerged from behind the potted shrubbery, dressed all in black
and wearing a ski mask that revealed nothing but his hazel green eyes.
A ski mask? In May?
He gripped her elbow and she gasped. The tray of flowers crashed to the concrete. Her bag
of vegetables tumbled to the ground and scattered in every direction. She managed a muffled cry
as he slapped a work glove-covered hand over her mouth, filling her nose with the stench of
rubber.
He spun her back to his chest and choked off her air with a thick arm around her neck.
“Shut up,” he snarled. The malicious command vibrated off her skin, sending a cold chill down
her spine. He stepped backward as if to drag her toward the corner of the building.
“Hey!” Mrs. Henderson from 5B hurried toward them, still in her scrubs after her shift at
New York Presbyterian. “Get your hands off her!”
The man released Emma so quickly she fell backward and landed hard on the stone planter
box next to the doorway. He stood frozen, his furious gaze fixed on her like a wild animal who’d
lost its prey and couldn’t decide whether or not to give up. She fought to memorize anything she
could about him, but it was all a blur once he turned and took off down the sidewalk.
Mrs. Henderson reached her side, grabbed her hands, and steadied her. “Emma, are you all
right?”
“Yeah,” she said as she stared down the street after her attacker, fighting for breath. “I’m
okay.”
But who the hell was that?
And oh my God. Had he just tried to abduct her?

At a table closest to the door, three people sat: a short, bald man, and two women. The
first had her blonde hair arranged in an elaborate style and lacquered into place by a liberal dose
of hair spray. She winced a little but had her head tilted in the direction of a wiry woman whose
lips were moving.
“This is how it works, Lola,” the woman explained while gesturing to the dancers. “The
man calls out the moves for the dancers, then they have to do what he tells them to do.”
“Eunice,” Lola sighed and managed an eye roll at the same time, “I know how square-
dancing works. This isn’t my first encounter, you know.”
“Ha!” Eunice tossed her head, bouncing her gray-threaded curls. “I figured that being a
former Vegas showgirl, your extent of dancing involved teetering around on high heels, waving
feather fans.”
The man sitting with them coughed, earning a sympathetic glance from Lola. “You okay,
Gus? Need some water?”
He met her gaze, then shook his head as he pushed up to standing. “Think I’ll go back to
my room and get some water.”
Both women watched Gus leave, then Eunice leaned closer to say, “He has no clue what
you said. He’s already hard of hearing, but with…” She gestured to a nearby speaker. “…the
music blasting, he doesn’t hear a word.”
While the music may have a few residents tapping their toes, it did nothing for those who
could hear. Lola pursed her lips and wrinkled her nose before speaking. “You’d think they’re
trying to deafen the rest of us. I’m leaving, too.” Lola reached for her walker and stood. She
glanced back over her shoulder to address Eunice’s earlier comment. “Showgirl routines are
choreographed. Some of it is quite complicated. We certainly never needed someone yelling
instructions on a microphone.”
Eunice gave a derisive sniff. Even though both she and Lola were part of Senior Sleuths,
a covert group within the center that solved cold cases, it was still fun to poke at the woman.
After all, what woman wouldn’t feel a little uncomfortable around a former showgirl. Getting the
aged blonde riled up evened the playing field, especially considering Eunice’s skinny form and
acerbic nature didn’t make her popular with the opposite gender. Thank goodness for Gus, who
had been waiting for a forceful woman to take charge of him.

Making friends was not something Eunice did easily. Her father once told her she should
laugh at the other children’s jokes and occasionally compliment them on something they did. He
also told her to be honest at all times. Talk about a paradox. It was hard to be honest and popular.
Eventually, she settled on being honest and helpful, even when the help wasn’t wanted. Was it
too late to change her ways? Better yet, did she want to?
One of the lady dancers, whose colorful skirt stood out with its multitude of petticoats,
interrupted Eunice’s reflections and invited her to join in. Someone had deliberately picked her.
Woo hoo! She jumped up and tried to ignore that most of the other attendees were in
wheelchairs. That had nothing to do with them picking her. Obviously, the dancer recognized in
Eunice a born square dancer.

Sitting without repose on one of the solar’s high-backed chairs, Constance shifted positions. An
unexpected chill crept in with the evening. The shutters were closed, and a fire danced and hissed on the
hearth. The room was aglow with candles whose light harmonized to showcase the exquisite tapestries on
the wall. Vibrant yet vulnerable, the flames quivered at the slightest draft.
Her stomach quivered, too, as she stared at her half-eaten pigeon pie. Whatever made me agree
to share his bed? The mention of rats? The thought of a prickly straw mat between her back and the cold,
hard floor?
From the other high-backed chair, Robert eyed the pie that lay unprotected on the table between
them. “Do you plan to eat that?”
A predator drawn to his prey. She shrugged. “I suppose not. Do you want it?”
“I thought you’d never ask.” He attacked the food.
She folded her hands in her lap. “Sir, your appetite is a thing of wonder.”
He swallowed, then grinned at her. “Why, thank you.” His smile disappeared. “Or do you
criticize?”
“Not criticize. Marvel.”
His dimples were back. The one on the right was deeper. “I’m a man of many talents, and eating
is one of them.” He took another bite.
“Evidently.” She cleared her throat. “I only wondered if…” Her stomach trembled as he licked
sauce from his fingers.
Abruptly, he ignored the food and studied her face. “If what?”
She sighed inwardly. Just say it! “If all your appetites run that strong.”
His intense stare roused something inside her. She’d never felt its like. Heat, not only in her face
but her entire body.
“You’re referring to appetites of the flesh.”
She lifted her chin. “I am.”
With a casual air, he leaned back. “I’ll admit, I’ve enjoyed the company of women. Have I ever!
Truly, deeply, unreservedly—”
“I grasp your meaning.” She shifted again on her chair. “Do you think you can live without it?”
“I’m willing to try.”
“Trying won’t suffice. If we’re to share a chamber, I need a clear statement of your intentions.”
He grabbed his wine, drained the cup, and plunked it down on the table. “We agreed to be
friends, did we not?”
“We did.”
“Friends don’t steal from one another. They take only what is willingly given.”
“Know this now: I shall never give it.”
His gaze held hers. “So you’ve said.”
“I mean what I say.”

“As do I, and you have my word. I shall never force you to consummate our marriage.”
Relief coursed through her. He was a man of his word; that much she knew. She was safe. All
would be well.
He slapped his thighs. “That said, shall we to bed?” He eased out of his chair and stretched his
limbs. “The mattress is calling my name.”
She hesitated only a second, then stood. “Odd. I thought it called mine.”
“You don’t mean—”
“No. The bed is as much yours as mine. We’ll share it.” ’Twas a simple matter of fairness. No
need to overthink it. Then why do my legs feel weak?
He glanced at her as they started toward the bedchamber. “Good. Feathers are far superior to the
floor.”
“So the mattress is stuffed with feathers. I noticed you testing it before; now I know why.”
“I thought perhaps it held wool, which would’ve been fine. But I’ll take luxury any day. Here we
are. After you, my lady.”
The lively fireplace greeted them as they entered the chamber. Already, the space was warmer
than before. Two stools stood in front of the fire. A table lined one wall; above it hung another fine
tapestry, whose threads wove the image of a swan on a secluded, tree-lined pond. Directly opposite sat the
bed. Its canopy was suspended from the ceiling, and rich green curtains spilled down around the carved,
wooden headboard and frame. The inner sanctum, with its turned-down linen and coverlets, waited in
shadow.
She stared. A person could lose herself in a bed like that. And in eyes as infinite as her
husband’s.

Two things you should know about me right up front. I’m a hard-core romantic! And I love history! I believe true love, real or imagined, should transform your life from a solitary journey into a passionate adventure. Easier said than done sometimes but writing about the infinite number of possibilities, working out the exact when and where, and developing the character’s personal journey to get there, thrills me to no end. I love history with larger than life heroes, chivalrous knights, lords and ladies, castles, manors, battles and conquests. These are the foundations for passionate, historical romance novels. That’s what I write. There is nothing like the intense emotions sparked between a driven, hard-working medieval warrior and a feisty damsel in a quandary, often not of her own making. It only makes sense that I use my MA in History and all those research techniques to create romantic characters from the past. Although I’m writing fiction, I like to incorporate authentic places, events, and people, embellishing the past. I use real history but with an artistic flare. I love research, especially from primary documents, and could get lost in them! You’ll discover a world of fiction wrapped around historical people and events in my stories. Some events you may recognize, some you may recognize but a little different than you remember, and some are just from my imagination. I’m fascinated by the High Middle Ages in Scotland, England, and Ireland. There are so many world-changing events taking place here from their participation in the Crusades to the Battle of Hastings that permanently connected the islands to the continent. Before the Declaration of Arbroath, before William Wallace, before the Doomsday Book, the area was ripe for great events and they never failed to deliver. It is on this combustible backdrop that I create characters with the same desires and motivations as we have today. When I’m not writing, I enjoy cooking. It’s relaxing and I always like to find something new and easy. On Fridays I occasionally share simple recipes with Foody Friday. Sometimes entrees. Sometimes desserts. Sometimes snacks. Always delicious. Check out my website and sign up for my newsletter below. Website * Facebook * Twitter * Bookbub * Amazon * Goodreads
