I have always been creative, be it art, theatre, film – anything but singing – you don’t want to hear that! I earned her bachelor’s degree in Theatre and Military Science from EMU where I spent most of my time either on stage, rappelling down buildings, or working one of three jobs. After college, I moved to Los Angeles, like so many other want-to-be actors, in pursuit of my dreams. I worked to pay the bills… but my love was acting and I was actually somewhat successful, mostly in commercials and independent films and I had a great time doing it. In 2008, after some major life changes, I self-published her first book PRIVATE WORDS UNSPOKEN, a compilation of poetry. Since then, my dreams have gotten bigger and I would like to think my storytelling ability has gotten better. I have done everything from secretarial work to business development to being the Director of a private preschool. I have fired an M16, jumped out of a C130, and given birth – TWICE – but I always return to my art. Though I’ll forever be a Michigan girl at heart, I now live in the South with my husband and two beautiful children. If I’m not working on my latest story, you can find me lounging with a good book, playing with my kids, or indulging in my unhealthy addiction to Starbucks coffee. Rain Rain Go Away Giveaway Hop

I’m keeping this one simple. With COVID-19 and stay at home orders I thought maybe people could use an Amazon gift card. Orders something you need, use it to stream a movie or two, whatever you like.

I’m a healthcare worker at a local hospital. We’re one of the few hospitals in my area that have ventilators. I’m still working as of now but since I’m an Occupational Therapy Assistant they’re still figuring things out as to whether we need to see patient’s on isolation for this. I’m thinking eventually we’re going to have to because at least some of those people are going to need to go to rehab and insurances require OT and PT treatment to help with authorization.

I’m hoping you all are doing well. Please take care of yourselves. Wash your hands, maintain social distancing, and we’ll get through this together!

Our school dresses were slate gray, at least there was that. No one walking by on the clifftops was likely
to look down and spot us in the gloom. The sun was going down behind the cliffs, and shadows were
reaching for the sea. A breaker swept toward us, crested, and fell back with a growl. My friends and I
were, I noted with relief, the only people on the beach.
Despite the darkness, I felt exposed, hemmed in between the surf and the cliffsides. The path up the
cliffs was at least a quarter of a mile behind us. Ahead, the stony shoreline stretched on for perhaps
three more miles. And if we continued to the end of the beach, I thought, and rounded Turnbow Head,
we would come to the Caer City docks. That was hardly the place for three seventeen-year-old St.
Alexander’s girls to be after dark.
Gretchen led the way, splashing through a tidepool. Ginny hesitated. Then she lifted her skirts to her
knees and followed. I took the rear, pausing occasionally to glance at the clifftops, and at our route back
to the path.
“Here we are, people.” Gretchen stepped up on a seaworn boulder and faced us. Masses of seaweed
clung to the stone beneath her feet. My father had been a sailor, and he once told me that the kind of
seaweed grasping at our feet is called knotted wrack. I thought of knots, and of the rack. I was in that
kind of mood.
Gretchen looked at me. “Well, Mara, you said you wanted to see the place for yourself. What do you
think?”
All of us turned and gazed at the limestone precipice to our west. The cliffs rose to a peak a good two
hundred feet above our heads. A lone tree stood at the top of the cliff, its leafless branches sloping back
from the sea. The smell of knotted wrack hung in the air.
Ginny shuddered. “I don’t like it.”
“If Annie jumped here, that was the end of her.” Gretchen shook her head. “Holy, heavenly Belthor.”
“If she jumped here, it would have killed her.” I felt a horrible lump in my throat. “But . . . but look at that.”
I turned my head to glance at the sea. “The water is a good twenty yards from the cliffside. And the tide
was full when we got to the beach. Mistress Franklin said she jumped at dawn. The tide was out then—
there’s an almanac in the school library—I checked.”
“So, what are you saying, girl?
“I’m saying there’s no way she would have ended up in the ocean. She would have hit the rocks, and the
city watch would have found her body.”
“You say that girl—” Gretchen gazed at me for a moment. “Maybe she lay there for a while and the tide
came in?”
“No. I mean, not if Headmistress Franklin told us the truth. The headmistress said the clamdiggers saw
her while she was still alive. It was dawn then, and the watch started looking for her right afterward.”
“So . . . what do you think happened?” To my ears, Gretchen’s voice had taken on a needling tone.
“I have no idea.” I felt as if Gretchen had been trying to force me to confess that, and I was cross about
having to gratify her. “But I think the headmistress lied to us. I think Pastor Avery lied to us. Everyone is
lying to us—”

“You’ll be sorry!”
Jackson spits blood and drags his beard across the sleeve of his blue jumpsuit, leaving a
trail of crimson. He stands over me with big fists clenched, knuckles spattered.
“You knew it could be any one of us, Milton.”
I pull myself away from him, my battered body sliding across the slick concrete of the
storeroom floor. My mouth works to speak, slurring.
“Why?”
“It’s a random draw, Milton. Always is.”
I wish it was. It should have been.
“Why her?” I manage, shaking my head to clear the flashing pinpoints of light.
“It was her turn.” Jackson shrugs like it’s just that simple.
I sob like a child, impotent rage dissolving into whimpers. The coppery tang of my own
blood oozes thick from both nostrils, mixing with the sand and ash—
I jerk upright with a start, spitting to clear my mouth. For a moment, I don’t know where I
am. I look for Jackson, for Julia—they were right there with me in the bunker.
Not anymore.
I’m the only one here now. Outside. Free.
I’ll never get used to the silence.
Dawn’s golden fire breaks across the eastern horizon and crawls along a massive ridge of
mountains in the distance. They look like sleeping giants, lying on their backs. Dark, with only
their profiles aflame, they wait with craggy jaws and protruding bellies for the full light of day to
awaken them from their slumber. Part of me wishes they’d rise up and greet me with a yawn. I
speak to them sometimes, but I know they won’t respond.
I’m not crazy. Not yet.

The bond I had with Jesse grew stronger, reminding me of my own bond with Finley. At night,
we became an unstoppable force and whatever differences we had dematerialized in the wind. He
loved picking out who he considered to be the perfect humans in the crowd. Sometimes he would
coo up to these women and the men, offering them free alcohol.
One hot summer night Jesse bought a white chiffon deco styled flapper dress with rhinestone
studs complete with white Cuban heels, convinced that this was the new fashion among human
women and I had to look my best. Fully dressed, I gazed in the mirror, mesmerized about how
human I now looked. I thanked him with a kiss on the cheek. He handed me a small compact mirror
and some makeup and I dabbed away my facial scar. I always wore my mother’s amulet but this time
he begged me to leave it at home.
Again, we had our own private booth near the back and we watched these humans dance,
spinning each other around to the music. I enjoyed the sounds of horns blasting my ears along with
the smell of blood in the air. We paid close attention to the human actions. When they clapped, we
clapped. When they cheered, we cheered.
“That dress looks beautiful on you,” Jesse said to me.
I smiled at him. “Not in a million years did I think I would find myself enjoying this environment
and wearing the latest fashions.”
“Neither did I but here we are,” he said to me, smiling back. “I’m curious. What did you see
yourself doing?”

“I couldn’t see myself living past the new century,” I replied. “I thought I’d die from tuberculosis
in London.”
His smile withered. “Why would you think that?”
I faced him. “My mother was a prostitute and I followed in her footsteps. Women have short life
spans in that type of lifestyle.”
“So is that how you got that?” Slowly he raised his hand and he placed it against the left side of
my face.
I looked away. I never mentioned my scar to him and he never asked me, until now. “Vampires.”
He dropped his hand. “Vampires?”
“It’s not important.” I didn’t have enough fingers on both hands to count how many people had
hurt me in both my human and Deamhan life. I didn’t want him to know about the vampires and
why I was important to them. I quickly changed the subject. “I’ve never asked you this but why did
you start boxing?” I realized that I didn’t know anything about Jesse’s human life, his parents, his
siblings if any. Again, I never bothered to ask. “You don’t seem like the type who would participate
in something like that.”
“My father was—” He stopped himself. “My father is an English teacher and my mother stays at
home, drinking afternoon tea with other bored and sad married women.”
“Your father is a smart man, then?” My eyes lit up.
“Yes, he is. On the other hand my mother, well, she just likes to gossip and buy expensive
things.”
“Did you not enjoy your family life?” I asked.
“I was bored,” he replied. “I wanted to do more with my life.” His eyes left my view for a
moment. “My family is very wealthy, Maris. My mother inherited her parents’ fortune. I was raised
around servants in a home big enough to fit 100 people. It was lonely. I was lonely.”
I wanted to feel sorry for him but I didn’t experience the life he had before being a Deamhan.
“So hitting other men with your fists sounded more exciting?”
“That was my only escape.”
“You could’ve just purchased your way out of Chicago.”
“Yes, but what good would that have done?” A solemn expression appeared on his face. “Money
doesn’t always make you happy, Maris.”
“It made Finley and me happy,” I replied.
“Yes, that’s true, but it won’t last forever and you and I know that we have forever.”
“So, what makes you happy?” It was the same question Ruby asked me a long time ago.
“You.” He grabbed my hand. “You make me happy.”
I stared into his eyes. “Blood doesn’t make you happy?”
“Blood fills my hunger but no, it doesn’t make me happy. I can feed and not be happy.” He
laughed. “What makes you happy?”
I wanted to tell him that he and Finley filled that desire. Swiftly, he planted his lips over mine and
I felt a hot flash tingle in my throat. In quick speed I pushed him away.
“What are you doing?”
With his elbows supporting his upper body, he looked up at me and smiled. “What do you mean?
I was kissing you.”
“I know but… why?”
“Kissing you would make me happy.” He quickly grabbed the edge of my dress and pulled us
further down into our booth. This time I didn’t push him away as he kissed me again. With his teeth
exposed he nicked my neck and I responded by placing my hand around his throat, tilting his head
to the side, and biting into his neck. I questioned my actions but I didn’t want to stop. We couldn’t
feed from each other but the idea of doing so proved enough to make me want to try. I wanted his

blood in me as he wanted my blood in him. He bit into my neck and I felt a sharp quick pain. His
thoughts twirled inside my head. I love you, Maris.
