The buzz is out Zima, the popular malt beverage from the 90’s, is making a come back this year. The question is, when will Zima be released?
Since the first whisperings of Zima making a come back it’s been shared on social media with much excitement by people in my age bracket. For me, it’s reminiscent of my college years. It was the summer of 1998 when I moved into my apartment in Pittsburgh with three roommates I never met. It was the first time living away from my parents. It was the first time I felt some sense of independence and freedom. Which of course translates to, I used the opportunity to do things my parents wouldn’t have normally let me do. Parties, late nights, hanging out with boys, maybe trying a cigarette for the first time.
During those parties there was always Zima. If I recall, it’s because it wasn’t that expensive. Everyone had their favorite way to drink it. Some drank it straight. Some liked to drop a Jolly Rancher into it. I also tried it with Skittles dropped into it. I’m sure there were other ways. Maybe I could think of a few new ones this summer.
I’m not a big drinker but I do enjoy a cold beverage on a warm summer night while sitting around a fire. But this time it won’t be talk about crushes, the next party, or college work. It will be my husband and I talking about plans for the house, our next vacation, or dreams of retirement. I have to admit, it will probably uncover some lost memories from college or just after when we were 20 somethings.
So the question is, when is Zima’s release date? I searched for this myself. The closest date I could come up with was on Zima’s facebook page where they are promising “July 4 or sooner”.

I love a cold drink on a hot evening myself. I’m pretty sure I’ve tried Zima before but don’t have any special memories tied to it. I’m excited for its return though and I definitely want to try it with some candy added to it.
