“He’s a hunter from Linos,” Mallory said as she stepped into the audience room. At one end of
the room, a long table stood with several chairs. Garlen and Faolan sat behind this table while
Pintra questioned the hunter.
“I’m here with the ambassador of Linos. This filth,” Braden pointed at Mallory.
“Attacked my men and me while we explored your city.”
“He’s a hunter,” Mallory said again. Leland held her hand. “He and the blond one next to
him, they’ve hunted me before.”
Pintra turned, saw Mallory’s pale face. “Were they,” Pintra stopped not wanting to ask.
The sour taste nearly overwhelmed her as she felt like she couldn’t breathe.
“Two of the six who raped me,” Mallory said quietly. Faolan pushed back his chair so
hard it fell over. “Don’t. Please, Faolan.”
“You expect,” Faolan said.
“It didn’t happen here,” Mallory said gripping his arm. “There’s nothing Garlen or any of
you can do about it. The others all wear hunter guild garb. I can only assume they’re hunters.”
She moved closer to Leland, ducking under his arm and welcoming the tingling as it soothed her.
“I demand,” Braden tried to stop Mallory from revealing more.
Pintra pushed him back. “You will be silent,” Pintra ordered. Signaling to the guards in
the room, she ordered, “Take them to the cells.”
“You can’t lock us up without hearing our side,” Shalon said. “We have rights.”
“Rights,” Garlen said stalking around the table towards the men. “Yes. You have rights.
However, you attacked a schoolyard full of children. You attacked a valued member of my
household. I’ll investigate and be in touch with the ambassador from Linos. In the meanwhile,

you will be held until further notice. Someone will take your statements and tend to your
wounded in the cells.” Garlen waved his hand at the squad holding the men. The squad jostled
and shoved the prisoners from the audience room.
“I’ll take their statement,” Faolan said hitting the table hard.
“I don’t think that will help,” Garlen said not sure he didn’t want to let Faolan lose on the
hunters. “Mallory, you’re certain?”
“They held me down,” Mallory said swallowing as the memories flooded her. “They took
turns as they… I … I won’t ever forget their faces.”
Leland scowled at Garlen while tenderly holding Mallory. His hands molded her body to
his as he kissed her temple. “There’s nothing you can do,” Mallory said. “It didn’t happen in this
province.”
“Tell me what happened,” Garlen asked gently. “Come sit here and be comfortable. Do
you need anything?”
Mallory moved to the chair he indicated. “I’m all right,” she said though her pale face
belied her words.
“Tell me what happened today,” Garlen asked specifying exactly what information he
wanted.
Mallory recounted the incident at the school. “They appeared out of nowhere,” she said.
“Is it possible they knew her schedule,” Faolan asked.
“It’s possible,” Pintra said. “While I trust our staff, it’s possible someone overheard the
children or one of the parents talking about the lessons.”
“While the Linos ambassador is here,” Garlen said to Mallory. “I think it best you take
guards with you.”
“Yes, sir,” Mallory said. “I’m sorry for this. I didn’t mean to cause trouble.”
“Mallory, you didn’t cause this,” Garlen said, squatting in front of her and taking her icy
hands in his. “The Linos ambassador isn’t happy you exist. While I try to negotiate to allow your
kind to immigrate here, he tries to negotiate for your return and for us to turn over all with magi
power to them. We’re at an impasse.”
“In other words,” Faolan said. “It’s not about you. It’s about their idiotic prejudices.”
