Halloween safety tips from ACUVUE

While some of you have already had trick or treat with your kids, other towns are getting ready to have theirs. Our trick or treat is on Monday.  If you have already done your trick or treat it’s important to keep in mind that a town your driving through might be holding their trick or treat.  If you haven’t yet there’s lot of safety measures to take.  Acuvue has provided some safety tips for us here for both trick or treaters and drivers.

For Trick-or-Treaters:
  • It’s important that pedestrians dress themselves in a way that provides contrast and reflectivity, for example, by wearing light colors. Wear white if you’re going to bicycle at night or walk at night, and wear reflective tape. Put it on parts of your body that are going to be moving—this goes for Halloween costumes as well!
  • Don’t let children run ahead of you and be sure to hold the hand of especially little ones.

For Drivers:
· You know that your reaction time and visibility is different at night, but did you know that when you’re looking straight ahead, the very center of your vision is the only part of your eye that really sees color? The side vision mostly picks up on motion, so at night when you’re looking straight ahead and an object is in the light, you can see the color, but you’re not going to see colors off to the side. It requires more head and eye movement to really recognize the color of the road signs (or costumed trick-or-treaters). Keep this in mind and stay alert!
· Turn on your headlights in early twilight. Not only for your own vision’s sake, but to cue pedestrians on the road that you are approaching.
· Do not look directly at the glare of the oncoming headlights and keep your eyes focused slightly above the headlights. Try to keep your eyes moving across the roadway so you can gauge everything.
· Make sure that all your windows and mirrors are clean so there’s no dirt to give you glare or affect your vision.
· Adjust headlights properly. It’s estimated that more than half of all vehicles on the road have improperly adjusted headlights.

For more great tips you can listen to the newest Healthy VisionTM with Dr. Val Jones. Optometrist Dr. Christina Schnider and Group Vice President of the National Safety Council John Ulczyski will be joining Dr. Val Jones for the show to talk about how to take care of your eyes in the dark. This edition will air on Tuesday Nov. 1, 2011.  You’ll be able to check it out HERE, or you can download it on iTunes for free.

  1. Very interesting stuff! I usually don’t think about things like this, but will keep in mind when I drive home from work tonight and take my 7-year-old trick or treating later on.
