I’m a U.S. Army veteran and retired senior civil servant, spending thirty years in Europe, Africa, Central America, and the Middle East. As a family of 6 we tend to travel domestically and only where we can drive. Flying just runs into too much money for us especially when you add in food, accommodations for 6, etc. Two things we’ve learned over the years, be prepared for just about anything, and the kids handle road trips better if they’re engaged and entertained.

These are some of our favorites. They don’t require extra items, almost everyone in the family can play, and the rules are fairly simple.
