How does GDPR affect US Blogs?

This post is sponsored by DiamondLinks. Any opinions expressed are my own.

So many changes for website owners with the repeal of net neutrality and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) with all these changes it can be hard for a website owner to grow and maintain their readership.

When you’re a blog owner like me, without a lot of technical knowledge, it’s also confusing.  I tend to look for professionals to help that are within my budget.  Looking for a way to have a customer success platform on a budget with someone you trust can be difficult to find, but not impossible.

The first thing I like to do is do searches for information on what I need to do. GDPR is the newest thing I had to look up.  I’ve been getting scores of emails asking me to confirm that I still want to be on email lists etc to comply with GDPR.   GDPR is something has an enforcement date of May 25, 2018.  Approved by European parliaments for data privacy.

But I’m in the US how does that affect me?  If you’re a website owner, if you receive traffic and readership from European nations you could be affected. If you have an email list and possibly have European readers subscribed to your email newsletter, you could be affected.

A simple step to take would be to send out an email to your entire email list asking your readers if they want to still receive your emails. They can easily unsubscribe if they want to.   If you somehow have your email list broke up between US readers and other readers, this can be easier for you.

It seems everyone is cracking down on data privacy. It’s definitely a good thing for everyone as a whole.  Website owners just need to be up-to-date and compliant with new changes.   It’s not just email lists though, if you have an app for your site, widgets that collect cookies, etc you’ll need to make sure they are updated and compliant with GDPR.  This is a little bit harder task.   With a simple search, you can find lots of sites with info from tech big wigs like IBM to help with GDPR.

My blog is my small business. I do have a day job but I consider my blog a second job that I love.  If something happened to my blog because I didn’t take necessary steps, I’d be devastated.  A little education, some work behind the scenes, and a few changes can mean the difference of having a 2nd job or not having a 2nd job for me.

corrections.

Today is the day I had dreamed of…
Ever since I hit puberty and grew to hate my mother, I’d wanted to live on my
own. At the age of twenty, I’d since grown to like her again. Nevertheless, the
day was still here. Time to move out, or “leave the nest,” as my old psychology
teacher used to put it.
I had gotten a part-time job as soon as I had been old enough, and I’d been
saving up my tiny paychecks for as long as I could remember.
While most kids spent their weekends partying and playing Xbox, I had been
working the backline at Burger Barn and babysitting kids in the neighborhood.
When I hadn’t been working, I had been shopping…but not for clothes or
makeup, or anything teenagers generally like.
No, I had spent my days off at Costco and Target, planning,
dreaming…organizing my perfect future life.
But all I’d planned for was the stuff, not what I’d do with it once the time
came or who I’d do it with.
My closet was filled with hand towels and unopened bars of soap. Plastic
packs of salt and pepper shakers were wedged between shampoo bottles and
shaving cream, and stacks of washrags were piled on top of a brand new
vacuum
in its box.
Another box, labeled ‘Cleaning Supplies,’ contained everything I could
possibly need to keep my house germ and dirt-free, bleach, detergent, Magic
Erasers…enough cleaners to last me a lifetime. And did I mention that I rarely
clean?
Everything was labeled with neat yellow stickers.
There were candles and frames in this box, and there were plates, bowls, and
cups in another. One had oven mitts, tin foil, and a jumbo roll of plastic wrap.
There was even an entire box dedicated solely to ‘Spices’.
Staring at the boxes now, I couldn’t help feeling a little lame. I’d put so much
stock in this moment, this move, that now it seemed like a letdown.
All of this planning for one moment, and now the moment was here.
But why did it feel so colorless?
And what’s with this feeling of guilt? Why can’t I shake this feeling that,
despite all of my preparations, I’m totally unprepared for what lies ahead?
My mother wasn’t angry at me for moving out, but she wasn’t eager to get rid
of me, either. During this whole process, her attitude was a perfect blend of,
“You don’t have to go, but I’ll support you if you think you’re ready.”
She’d helped me pick out furniture and had even paid for the U-Haul.
I tried to imagine her sitting down to eat dinner, one lonely dinner plate in a
sea of overstuffed food platters, sipping white wine by herself.
Would she eat at the table, maintaining our seven o’clock dinner schedule? Or
would she take her plate and wine, wander out to the back porch, maybe watch
the sun dip down low behind the mountains? What if she got lonely?
I guess what it boiled down to was, I was worried about her. She had never
been the type to get depressed, but she had never been all alone, either.
My dad had left when I was little. Memories of him were mostly hazy ornonexistent.
After all these years, she had never even dated. All she’d had for company
was me, until now.
My milky white reflection in the dresser mirror looked older than I
remembered, more like stone than flesh.
There was a soft knock on my bedroom door.
“Ready to load up?” Mom opened the door, letting herself in.
I tried to feign excitement, nodding and smiling as I scurried over to the closet
to grab my first load of boxes.
We carried one after the other, and just when it was time to lift the heavy
furniture, my brother Nolan showed up.
He was fashionably late, as usual. His dark black hair was a mess, with
cowlicks all over. It looked like he’d just gotten out of bed. Unlike me, Nolan
didn’t plan for anything. He was older than me, by three years, and he had no
plans to go to college. He worked part-time at a local bar, drinking for free and
spending his tips on God knows what. You’d think that with his lifestyle he
would still live at home with us, but he mostly crashed at his best friend
Cooper’s house or his girlfriend’s place, but his “girlfriend” changed every other
week, so I couldn’t keep up with the latest.
“A little late, aren’t ya?” I teased, smiling despite myself. His green eyes
looked droopy and bloodshot, but they twinkled all the same.
“Ready for your big day?” He went straight for the red fabric sectional,
breaking it apart to make the process of lifting it easier.
“I guess. I’m a little nervous,” I admitted, moving to the other end of one half
of the sectional, lifting when he told me to. I’d been storing it in one of our spare
bedrooms, but Mom and I had managed to drag it outside on our own before he
arrived.
Lifting it up and into the U-Haul left me feeling breathless.
He smirked. “You, nervous? Yeah right. You’ve been planning this forever.”
My mom came outside, pleased to see Nolan. She was carrying a painted blue
box that looked like it was about a hundred years old. It wasn’t that big, but
from
the way she was carrying it, it looked heavy and important.
There was a hand-painted peacock on the front of the lid, the colors faded by
time but still brilliant.
“Uh…that’s not mine,” I said, coming over to help her.
“It’s not mine, either.” She gave me a strange smile. Nolan moved over beside
us, looking at the box with a bored expression.
“This was your grandmother’s. It’s been in my closet for years. I found it aftershe died, stored away in the attic.” She carried the box to the back of the U-
Haul,

resting it on the edge of the cargo area. There was an ornate latch with a rusty
brass knob to open it.
Grinning at my brother and me, she turned the box toward us, and it made a
small creak as she opened it.
I don’t know what I expected. Treasure or secrets, perhaps?

Whatever I had expected, it had been something more interesting than what I
saw, faded scraps of paper and cheap looking costume jewelry.
My mom stuck her hand in and shuffled through the papers and plastic.
“Here it is!” She pulled out a vintage skeleton key. It was bigger than any key
I’d ever seen, and it glistened in the fading sunlight. I took it from her hand,
surprised by how heavy it felt. It appeared to be made of gold.
“That’s the key to your house,” Mom said, her voice barely above a whisper.
“But we had keys made.” I stared at the crooked shiny key, mesmerized by its
intricate design.
“Yes. But that is the original key to Doris’s house. It belongs to you, now.”

Excerpt 2 from Hometown Girl After All

At the diner, Chad stepped behind Julia and pushed open the door for her, his
hand warm on her back to lead her through. Bells chimed, announcing their arrival, and
Marge glanced up from behind the counter. Her customary greeting froze on her lips as
she did a double take, her conversation with a bald man seated in front of her forgotten.
The song on the jukebox ended and all the diners turned in the suddenly silent room to
watch Julia and Chad walk to a table.
As Chad pulled out Julia’s red vinyl and chrome chair, the jukebox clicked and
clattered, changing records. The first few words of the song P.S. I LoveYou, drifted across
the room, as Julia did the butt-lift and scoot maneuver so Chad could scoot up her chair.
The other diners slowly returned their attention back to their plates and conversations.
“It’s the Beatles,” Chad commented distractedly, shifting his chair up to the table,
his eyes darting nervously between Julia and the other customers.
She nodded, engrossed in digging through her purse for something. Giving up in
frustration, completely for- getting what she’d been looking for, she turned to hang her
purse on the back of the chair, inadvertently catching the eye of a man and woman at the
next table who sat staring, with their forks still hovering in mid-air.
Chad cleared his throat and lifted two menus from behind the salt and
peppershakers. “So, what do you want to eat?” he asked, his voice a bit too loud.
Jumping in her seat, Julia’s gaze flew from the staring couple, back to Chad.
“I—I’m not sure. What’s good here?”
Pretending to glance over the menu, Chad berated himself for bringing Julia to the

diner. Why hadn’t her taken her to Uniontown where they could have cuddled in the
corner booth of a crowded restaurant where no one would notice them? Feeling the back
of his neck burn, he glanced over to see Marge’s pink tennis shoes on the floor next to the
table.
He sighed inwardly and followed the pink uniform up to Marge’s face, which
clearly but silently said, “I knew it!”
“Well,” Marge stated, her tone speculative, a wide grin on her face. “What can I
get for you two this fine evening?”
Chad glanced at Julia, noting the misery written across her face, and he flinched.
“I’d like a Coke. Julia?”
“Water please,” she muttered, not making eye contact with Marge.
Pretending to scribble on her pad, Marge sized up the couple over her reading
glasses. “You got it,” she finally replied, turning on her heel.
Julia adjusted the salt and peppershakers into a row with the container of sugar
packets and the ketchup, then turned her attention back to her menu.
“I like the meatloaf,” Chad said, glancing up. “Hmm,” she mumbled, turning the
page. “And the tuna melt.”
Julia nodded.
“Sometimes I get the—”
Marge plopped two large red plastic tumblers on the table, and scooted the one
full of water toward Julia. The aging waitress then tugged two paper-wrapped straws
from her apron, tossed them on the table, and collected her pad and pencil. With one hip
cocked and her glasses balanced on the end of her nose, she glanced between Chad and
Julia.

Chad watched as Julia’s neck turned red, the color flooding up over her chin, then
her cheeks. “Give us a minute please,” he said, his eyes never leaving Julia, angry at
himself for being such a dunce.
Wishing she were invisible, Julia suffered the curious stares of the other diners.
Shoving down her discomfort and battling to muster even a dab of confidence, she
glanced up at Chad.
He took a long drink of soda, then set down his glass. “Sorry, we should have
gone to Uniontown…” he muttered.
Julia straightened in her chair. “No, I’m fine, really.” She lifted her glass. “Have
you had time to think about the flower—”The tumbler in her hand shifted in her grip,
then fell to the table top, the water and ice pouring across the gleaming white table and
directly onto Chad’s lap.
His chair screeched back as he bound to his feet. Wiping at his pants and shaking
his hands, Chad danced backward in an effort to miss the torrent, barely managing not to
fall into the lap of the woman seated behind him. When he looked up, all he could see
was Julia’s stricken expression.
“I’m so sorry,” she gasped, then hurried around the table. Plucking a handful of
napkins from the dispenser, she frantically wiped at Chad’s crotch.
“Julia—” he stuttered, still in shock, his hands and shirt drip- ping into the
growing puddle.
She continued to press the napkin into his jeans, desperate to help.
“Julia!” he said louder, grasping her wrist in his fist.
She stopped, frozen in horror, finally noticing that everyone in the diner sat

staring at her hand pressed to Chad’s crotch. She stood and her hand dropped from
Chad’s grip, her face turning so pale he was afraid she would faint.

DREAM ACROSS TIME – Book 1

A deep, warm laugh rumbled from him.
“You think it’s funny that I’m going nuts?” She placed her hands on her hips and glared
at him over the horse’s back.
Quinn moved around the horse. “You are not going insane.”
As Quinn took another step toward her, she took a step back. “That’s what Julie says. I’m
not convinced, though.”
With every step she took, Quinn matched it. In a deep, sultry voice he uttered, “My
beautiful, intelligent Evelyn, your mind is very sound.”
Her butt hit the building. Standing in a pile of broken hay stalks, her gaze fixed on
Quinn’s eyes, and her breaths came in short rasps. Her mind didn’t feel sound at all, neither did
her body. Pulse racing, heart pounding against her chest, she seemed in the midst of losing
control. All her senses heightened until colors were brighter. She looked past Quinn at the gentle
slopes of the mountain range nearby and the deep blue sky.
He stood an inch before her. She breathed in his musky, masculine scent. Her clothes
tightened and scratched against her sensitive skin. Though under a warm sun, a shiver raked her
body. How could a man rob her of control, of her senses?
Quinn placed his hands on the building, trapping her between his arms. “Tell me,” his
husky voice whispered in her ear. “What has gotten you so bothered you think you are going
crazy?”
The heat radiating between their close bodies sent ripples of desire through her. She
shuddered.
“Well?”
“You,” she whispered in return, not meeting his gaze. “These dreams. They’re
interrupting my life. I’m letting my relationship with you interfere with everything I do when I’m
awake. Any good psychiatrist would have a field day with me.” Evelyn paused, took a deep
breath to calm her excited body.
Since he towered over her by at least a foot, she talked to his chest. The white shirt,
pulled taut over his front, showed the outlines of his well-defined muscles. She wanted to touch
them. Evelyn clenched her fists at her sides, taking in another deep breath, and looked up. “It’s
gotten to the point where Julie thinks I’m in love—”
“Are you?” Quinn interrupted, a hint of pleading tainted his voice.
His question caught her off guard. She hadn’t thought about the possibility of love, of
discussing their feelings for each other. She didn’t answer, and her lack of response brought an
expression of sadness to Quinn’s features. She cared for him, but love? How could she love
someone who wasn’t real, someone who existed before her birth? Someone who’s a ghost?
Quinn turned his back to her. “I thought… never mind.”
The misery in his voice pinged at her soul. “Quinn.” She put a hand on his shoulder to
halt him from leaving. “I’m sorry. I can’t love you. You’re not real.”
His body tensed beneath her fingers. Quinn turned back to her and her hand fell to his
chest. He held it there. “Damn it, Evelyn. Stop talking nonsense. I am real.”

She couldn’t deny that fact. His hands were warm. His heart beat strong and steady. Her
eyes widened and she gazed up into his passion-filled gaze. She wished she wasn’t dreaming.
“Let me show you how real I am.” His lips descended onto hers.
All the blood rushed from her head and her knees weakened. She leaned into his body for
support. His arms wrapped around her. Every nerve fired at his touch. His lips parted and his
tongue coaxed her mouth open.
Too dazed to resist, she copied his motions, and the gentle kiss blazed into a raging fire.
Their mouths, hot and hungry, moved against each other’s in perfect harmony. Evelyn’s arousal
gained momentum. She swirled her tongue against his in wild abandon, learning the sweet taste
of him. Digging her fingers into his shoulders, she held on to the moment for dear life.

California Can Wait Boot Tour & Giveaway 4/22 – 5/22

California Can Wait
by Marci Boudreaux
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Reporter Andrea Davidson isn’t running from her mistakes. There’s no escaping

the career-ending mess she fell into back home. But she is moving
forward, and is halfway to a new life in California when someone
breaks into her motel room. She’s lost her computer and her dignity,
but that’s only the beginning of her newest problem: local news
editor Graham Bradley.

Graham Bradley doesn’t know a thing about the newspaper business. A widow
with a promise to keep, he’s got more than just his own personal
welfare riding on this small-town paper. The last thing he needs is a
pushy woman with a secret in her past and a vicious red pen throwing
all his mistakes and insecurities front and center on his desk. Faced
with an impossible choice, Graham hires Andi, but hopes she’s not
just the last-and maybe worst-in a long line of bad decisions. Saving
the small-town Gazette is the second chance both Andi and Graham need.
But with bill collectors calling, Andi’s past catching up fast, and the
chemistry between them making work next to impossible, will Andi and
Graham get the second chance they both desperately need? Or will
their demise be the next big headline?

As a teen, Marci Boudreaux skipped over
young adult books and jumped right into the world of romance novels.
She’s never left. Marci lives with her husband, two kiddos, and
their numerous pets. She is a freelance writer appearing monthly in a
variety of local magazines as well as a content editor.
Romance is her preferred reading and writing genre because nothing feels
better than falling in love with someone new and her husband doesn’t
like when she does that in real life.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?
That is the one question authors seem to get all the time and one that isn’t always easy to answer.
Characters and plots tend to evolve over time and don’t always have a clear starting point.
That’s not the case with California Can Wait.
I know exactly where this book came from. At the risk of sounding too much like an E.L. James rip off,
this book used to be fanfiction. Not for Twilight however. There were never any sparkling vampires here.
My fanfiction habit was based on the now defunct soap opera One Life To Live and that is where this
particular story got it’s origin. So many of the readers who struggled through my bad grammar back then
are still reading my stories—luckily, I have better grammar now!
If you are a fanfiction writer or reader, you know how passionate we fans can be when the shows don’t do
the characters justice. In this case, the writers were really trashing my favorite character Viki Lord

(played by the amazing Erika Slezak). After hitting what seemed like rock bottom, she disappeared off-
screen for several months for a bit of a character reboot.

In the meantime, I whipped up this fanfiction story that the readers just loved. Years and years later, I am
still asked if I can take this story or that story and make them into novels. That’s actually a bit more
challenging that it seems because fanfiction already has a world and established characters, but this
particular story was a bit easier. Since I was introducing new characters in a new town where our heroine
had gone while not on-screen, I was able to eliminate any potential copyrighted material fairly easily to
add to a for-sale product.
The characters in California Can Wait have grown quite a bit from where that story was, but the readers
who were with me back then are going to recognize a lot of elements from the original. And new
readers…without this confession, you never would have known!
