The Last Merry Go Round Book Tour & Giveaway

The Last Merry Go Round by C.L. Charlesworth Genre: Women’s Contemporary Fiction

When fear underlines the answer, Y E S becomes a trap with ominous consequences. There are three letters when put together that can change your life—they can either bring happiness or sadness. The letters spell the word Y – E – S. When spoken lovingly, Y E S means everything. When fear underlies the answer, Y E S becomes a trap with ominous consequences. For Diane Fletcher, a commitment to Y E S has left her dangling on a tightrope between sanity and insanity. Despite children she loves, and an opulent lifestyle, saying yes to twenty-eight years of marriage with Richard has brought very little happiness. Too many secrets permeate Diane and Richard’s relationship. Guilt, alcohol, and sedatives are Diane’s safety net when she falls. Regular visits to a psychiatrist have done little more than put Diane back on the tightrope. Richard has other coping mechanisms. He is devoted, and at the same time, severe, ambitious, callous, and vindictive. How different Diane and Richard have grown together. Raw emotions, unthinkable actions, and an explosive secret threaten any pretense for their marriage. The Last Merry Go Round peels back the skin of a volatile marriage with dark secrets, revealing what happens to the family when the secrets explode. Add to GoodreadsAmazon * B&N

Who am I? I have the gift of imagination and that has been a beacon all my life. I’m fortunate to be able to take a blank piece of paper and create a page turning story that evokes a wide array of human drama. I’m inspired by the simplest–to the most complex challenge a person can face, and with that, derive empathy for my characters. I would best describe myself as a “back porch storyteller”– writing that grabs you from the first sentence. I have written two books (so far): The Last Merry Go Round and The Ears That Have Eyes. Each book takes a human challenge and hurls the characters against the wall. Whether or not they survive— depends on them. Website * Facebook * Twitter * Amazon * Goodreads

The Beginning –
The Normal Life

FIRST THOUGHT TODAY: the coffee is cold. And I can say with full honesty, sitting across the table from
Richard, in our twenty-eight years of marriage, the word yes has brought me little happiness. I know and
believe from all I’ve come to accept; the longer I stare at the kitchen’s cracked plastered wall in need of
repair; this image symbolizes our love and marriage. The light in a once romantic and naive sixteen-year-
old falls dimmer and dimmer. Oblivion paints a foregone conclusion. If only Richard cared to listen. But
this isn’t the morning. He’s too happy. His shaven face energizes and re-energizes the more he talks. The
patient wife doesn’t interrupt. A dutiful smile passes from her face to his. Richard is who I am, and what I
am is lost between the beginning and the end of his sentences.
*

“All my time invested courting Jared Longview will finally pay off.” My husband holds out his empty
coffee cup—minus the word, please, a foreign word.
The obedient wife pushes away from the table. She moves unenthusiastically to the coffee maker.
Silence is necessary while pouring his drink. She listens, trying to remember it all because a test will
come. It always does.
“Father can no longer deny my abilities.” The husband’s grin changes into broad laughter. “Damn. My
portfolio will be quite substantial from this deal.”
The refreshed coffee in front of him goes unnoticed. The wife wishes for that, thank you. She’s a fool.
Richard’s consumption lay with Richard and money—lots of it. The Wall Street Journal, a preoccupation
must, with breakfast, now has his attention. Fist pounds on the table means the stocks are up. Grunts and
curses are losses.
The cussing appears minimal. “There’s nothing crucial today. I get to keep the cars,” he chuckles in
the wife’s direction, “and you, my dear Diane . . . get to do what you do to look good for me.”

*

My appropriate cue: a cute upward turn of my mouth, plus several affectionate strokes to his arms. Yes.
I’m a well-trained wife. A pinched smile and hot second-glances settle into my husband as he turns the
paper’s next page. Apple slices and black coffee satisfy the wife’s mustn’t-gain-weight-husband-rule. The
wall clock says seven. Coffee cups clang on to saucers. Newspaper rustles. She sits expressionless. Hands
fold into a neat lap rest. She sits watching time watch her. She hopes for love between them. Now, she
imagines a lightning bolt crashing through the ceiling and killing him as it did to the priest in The Omen.

The Dragon Queen blinked once, then again, more slowly, but said nothing.
And in that moment, Dreqnir launched himself at her in a rage. As Elizabeth
watched in amazement, the Dragon Queen shifted form and collapsed back in on
herself, becoming much smaller and much… different. Her wings faded and
vanished, her scales disappeared, and her color darkened from orange-gold to
black. That was the color of a robe she now wore—except that “she” was now a he:
a tall and slender man with a long, gray beard that flowed down almost to his waist.
In the same instant that Dreqnir flew at him, he raised a crooked wooden staff
out in front of him, and the massive dragon seemed to slow down. Dreqnir looked
almost suspended in midair as the black-cloaked figure stepped aside and out of his
path. Then he pivoted, thrust his staff high into the air, and…

Emergence Here Comes Earth Book 1 by William Lee Gordon Genre: Science Fiction

Where did mankind really come from? Why are we here? We can’t understand the past until we embrace the future. These critical mysteries take center stage as Earth emerges into a Galactic Society that is far more perilous than anyone could have imagined. Our history is far more complicated than we could have known. Can a few brilliant minds find a way out for Earth? One saving grace is that there are those that believe ancient clues foretell that Earth has a destiny, and if we can survive our present difficulties we might just find out what that destiny is… Dr. Mark Spencer was a young and up and coming history and anthropology professor who was all too familiar with what happens to less advanced civilizations when suddenly exposed to others of considerably higher technology. There’s only one survivor and the culture witnessing magic isn’t it. When modern day Earth suddenly finds itself on the losing end of that proposition a team of the world’s best scientists is put together to find a solution. Of course the advanced society being friendly, Earth’s citizens uniting, and the world’s politicians working together for the common good would help tremendously, but… what if none of that were true? Operation: Broken Star

MISSION BRIEF

Classification: Ultra Secret Black Diamond
Authorization Status: Approved
Operational Priority: Level 1
Background:
(Excerpt from the report of the lead investigation team for the US Government):
What precipitated the Crazies was the most significant, shocking, bizarre, and tragic event in
human history…
By 2014, the U.S. government had finally authorized the privatization of boosting cargoes into
low earth orbit (LEO). Over the next decade as costs came down and commercial demands
for low gravity, perfect vacuum manufacturing environments rose, several multi-national
corporations cooperated in replacing the International Space Station with the world’s first truly
permanent space station, Laze Fair One. Home to almost 300 people, the huge construction
was mankind’s greatest achievement and source of pride – until it disappeared.
It didn’t break up. It didn’t crash or burn-up in reentry. It just… disappeared. Telemetry
monitoring stations sounded ‘lost signal’ alarms designed to warn bored technicians to pay
better attention and re-align their dishes… all to no avail. The station was simply gone.
It was almost two full days later that weak communications signals started coming in to radio
receivers all over the planet. On open circuits with the whole world listening, station personnel
reported an incredible story that was only believed because of the accompanying video,
telemetry, and the 54 minute 12 second delay in two-way communications; the station was
now in orbit around Neptune.
The station was designed to be as self-sufficient as possible, but at 30 AU from the sun and
with solar panels designed to operate at only one AU (note: one AU = the distance from the
Earth to the Sun), battery charge that was critical for heating, carbon dioxide scrubbers, and

other life-
support dwindled quickly. Top priority was given to reporting how an alien spacecraft had

appeared next to the station, somehow ‘bubbled’ it and then proceeded to tow it (at incredible
speed, invisibly, and with no change in inertia), and then abandon it at Neptune.
There was no possibility of rescue.
Once all the data, subjective observations, and informed speculation had been transmitted
from the station, the remaining few hours were spent with 279 people each taking time to tell
the rest of us goodbye. It is this investigator’s recommendation that when the world gets

around to erecting a memorial, this should be a looped video memoriam.
Additional Data:
(Highly Classified – Unknown to the public)
Major David Johansen, second in command of the station, managed to transmit a short burst
of encrypted data using a cipher that was only known to a close friend back on Earth. In this
burst, Commander Imbibe and Major Johansen forwarded a video communication that was
received by the station immediately before the alien ship left them at Neptune. This
transmission was received over the Commander’s supposedly secure emergency channel.
Fortunately, no other station personnel were aware of the message or its contents. It was only
23 seconds long, but what was interesting was that the background contained voices of what
was unmistakably a heated disagreement. Everything in that background was unintelligible
and definitely of an unknown language. The foreground was dominated by the head and
shoulders of an apparent female human being that mouthed one word before signing off. It
was Commander Imbibe’s opinion (which has subsequently been verified to 87% accuracy by
linguistic experts) that the one word mouthed by the alien was, “sorry.”
Subsequent Events:
(Highly Classified – Unknown to the public)
The leadership of six different countries (see addendum III) have been contacted by
representatives of the same race that abducted our space station. Citing another faction of
their race as the culprits of the abduction, this faction offers peace and friendship.
Mission Stipulation:
Despite appearances, this race is deemed alien with unknown intentions.
Mission Mandate:
A multi-national team is to be assembled under the mission name: Broken Star. It is the
mandate of this team to travel to the home worlds of the aliens and evaluate:

  • The scope and sincerity of the offer.
  • How advanced (in technology years) this civilization is.
  • Identify and prioritize desirable technologies.
  • The cost and limits (if any) on technology transfers.
  • Identify what we have (if anything) that they want?

I was raised by fairies in a sylvan glade under a massive oak tree. My early life was spent wandering fields and woods searching for acorns and berries and staring at the cloud shadows racing across the landscape while listening to the whispers on the wind. The woods have always called to me, their silken tones luring me onto narrow paths leading to the hidden magical places. Magic and the mystical are alive and well in all my books. Celtic and Norse fantasy, time travel, murder mixed up with ghosts, humor and steamy romance, and a shapeshifting coyote, all inhabit my novels. If confused about where to begin–start with Moonstone, book 1 of Wolfmoon. My books are not what you would call literature, and yet they are not mere entertainment either. They are unique–humorous at times, sad at times, and page-turners that take the reader into a world separate from this one. I do not write to market, I write from my heart. I couldn’t stop writing if I tried–it is the heart and soul of me now. I am still astounded by how my characters lead me on, taking me down meandering paths where I hadn’t planned to go. The muse sits on my shoulder most days, and when she’s absent I flounder and realize I need a break. I love all things magic, including the Tarot, the runes, divination of all kinds, ghosts, clairvoyance, astral travel–you name it. Magic is all around us if only we open our eyes to it. I lived in the Pacific Northwest for sixteen years before moving to the desert southwest with my husband, a cat and a dog. The move was hard because I left family behind, but Arizona is a wonderful place to be and the weather, at least in the winter, is delightful! In my spare time I do yoga, hike, garden, and enjoy the bird and animal life that abound in the desert. 1.-“I’m going over there,” Brant told her once they arrived at the hardwood forest near
the homeless camp on the edge of the city.
Kat gazed at where he pointed. “But that’s the homeless camp.”
“Yeah, I know. I like talking to them.”
“I’ll take Pooka with me, then.”
Brant nodded. “She knows what to do.”
“Really? How do you know that?”

“Because she’s not really a dog, she’s more like a protection spirit.”
Kat laughed. “You are too much.”
He shrugged and headed off, his hands deep in the pockets of his low-slung shorts.
“Okay, it’s you and me,” Kat whispered, taking a trail she knew. It led into what she liked
to think of as the magical part of the forest, the place where she could swear she heard
fairies and tiny creatures whispering. The sun always shone there, despite what the
weather was up to everywhere else. She couldn’t remember how she’d discovered this
place. Someone had brought her here, and led her down these shadowy trails to locate
special herbs, but for some reason the person was nameless and faceless, a blank in
her memory.
Pooka loped ahead, floppy ears alert as she stopped to sniff this or that. She had to be
part sheepdog with her long black and white fur and intelligent brown eyes.
Kat hurried down the trail that Pooka chose, not surprised when she came to a cleared
area with chamomile growing. She bent to add it to the basket slung over her arm. It
was so nice to be on her own for a change where she could think and process all that
had happened this past month. But instead of processing she was overtaken by a
vision.
She was with Brant, but he was older—closer to her own age. He was handsome and
attentive, his arm around her waist as they walked together under the trees. She knew
they were heading toward a pond where they would strip off their clothes and go skinny-
dipping. And after that they would make love in the tall grass. Pooka’s bark snapped her
out of it.
She shivered, her heart pounding. The idea of making love with the kid she was raising
was disgusting and immoral. It was barely ten seconds later that a man was standing in
front of her, the same one who’d bothered her several times in the past. But she hadn’t
seen him in a while, and never here. He was wide-shouldered and barrel chested with
coal black hair and piercing eyes the color of the sky just before the stars appeared.
Pooka snapped at his legs, her mouth curled back in an angry snarl. When the man
kicked at her, Kat shouted, “Leave her alone!”
He moved closer, his hands making intricate patterns as his eyes pinned her like a bug.
From her past experiences she knew that if she didn’t run right now, she’d be rooted to
the spot until he was finished with her. She moved backward away from him, stumbling
in her haste. And when Pooka distracted him, taking his gaze from hers, she turned and
ran. Behind her Pooka’s growls grew even more ferocious, the man shouting at her in a
language Kat couldn’t understand. She heard the thunk of his boot connecting with
Pooka, the whimper that came afterward.

“But Simon,” Lady Elsa’s protest carried into the corridor as I opened the back door, “she has a right
to know.”
“But that was the whole point of doing it this way.” Dentin’s reply carried beyond the room. They
were both doing nothing to keep their conversation a secret, so I took it as a sign to enter without
announcing myself. As I expected, they pulled me right into the midst of their debate.
“Wilard, Dentin wishes to take over responsibility for Owen’s education, and I say he needs to ask
Constance first.” Lady Elsa turned in her seat to acknowledge my arrival. “What do you say?” Her dark
hair hung about her shoulders in wild disarray, no sign of a wimple anywhere near. Her clear skin glowed
with the obvious beauty of a woman healthily pregnant. She was loved and cared for, secure and
appreciated, and it showed.
The sight made me wish to see Constance similarly bareheaded and glowing. The realization hit me
in the gut like a fist. I wanted Constance to be happy and content, and that was more important than
almost everything.
“What mother wouldn’t want her son to have all the opportunities I can provide?” Dentin asked the
question in a friendly tone, but his appraising glance between Elsa and me made it clear he had noted my
reaction to his wife.
“If you are discussing Constance and Owen, I recommend consulting her. She doesn’t respond well
when backed into a corner.” I met the earl’s assessing frown. “As you well know, my lord.”
Dentin leaned back from the table and propped his clasped hands on his head, elbows akimbo. “So
you are siding with my wife against me.” Although his body language spoke of a man relaxed, a
dangerous edge to his tone sent a warning.
Unsure if he truly meant the threat, I chose to ignore it. “I am expressing my opinion. Whether or not
Lady Dentin holds the same opinion, I know not.”
Dentin’s dark eyes narrowed, and he grew tenser without appearing to move. Elsa didn’t make the
situation any better by eyeing her husband with a challenging tilt to her chin and a hint of smugness
thrown into the mix.
Dentin surged to his feet. I jumped at the sudden movement, but Elsa didn’t even flinch.
“We will be in my book room,” he informed her in a overbearing tone. Then, he crossed to her side
and leaned down to plant a long and lingering kiss on her mouth. Elsa responded in kind, at which point I
studied the floor like a blushing lad barely grown.
“Coming?” Dentin asked. He stood in the open threshold leading into the front part of the house,
exuding the pleased appearance of a man confident in his wife’s affections.
