“Mierta!” Mortain shouted at the top of the stairs, hearing nothing but his own voice echo. Watching
smoke drifting out of the open doorway, Mortain took in a deep breath and tried to slow down his heart.
The aroma of acrid chemicals and burning flesh filled his nose.
“Mierta!” he shouted again. “Son, you all right?” He listened, hearing nothing more than what sounded
like gasping breaths.
“Father,” Mierta mouthed in response to Mortain’s calls, unable to produce any sounds as he dropped to
one knee. His heart was pounding. Each pulse matched the ache he felt in his temples. A deep burning
pain seared through his chest every time he took a breath. It was like he was slowly being strangled and
there was nothing he could do to stop it. The inside of his nose felt charred and his throat felt like he was
swallowing tacks. He blinked, his eyesight blurring, the pain beginning to overwhelm him. Nausea built
in his throat and droplets of sweat slid down the side of his face. He wished he could do anything to end
the torture. He could not imagine dying would be much worse.
Mierta attempted to stand and tried to get away from the workbench. He managed a few staggering steps
before his body was drained of all energy. He watched puffy white circling clouds fill his vision before
everything was replaced by darkness.
Mortain felt his stomach drop at the sound of something breaking. “Mierta!” he screamed, racing down
the stairs. “Mierta, answer me!”
When he reached the bottom, Mortain abruptly stopped, taking in the horrific scene before him. His son
was unconscious; lying sprawled out on his back. What remained of a small culture tube lay shattered
next to him, and chemicals dripping from a workbench bubbled and fizzled as they made contact with the
hardwood floor.
Acidum salis, he thought, his eyes widening.
Mortain raised his arm to his mouth, careful to not inhale any of the smoke that was filling the room. He
trembled as he came closer, observing the damage that had been done to the left side of his son’s face.
The skin was mostly raw red with patches of peeling burned black skin hanging off his face. Blood was

seeping from some of the deep crevasses caused by the acid. Most of the damage was confined to the
cheek and jaw area. His eye was spared any damage.
“Oh, my dear Lord,” he uttered, fear filling his heart. “My poor boy! What have I done?”

“Wait… how out of the loop am I? I didn’t know you had a son.” Savannah shook her head.
A lot of things had changed while she’d been gone.
Gabriel shrugged. “You never called, I guess. I know you never called me.”
Savannah snorted. “I didn’t phone my parents unless I had to, and I called Jay several times.
But, he never mentioned you had a son or you lived with him.” Savannah’s face grew
stormy. “And I didn’t call you because Marissa made it very clear she didn’t want me to.”
Gabriel shifted his weight again. He’d done that when nervous since he was a kid. “Yeah,
well, Marissa knew you had a crush on me when you were a kid, and she was the jealous
type.”
Savannah’s eyes grew wide and her jaw dropped. “Crush on you? On you? Whoever said
that?”
Gabriel’s face broke into a huge grin. “Oh, c’mon now, my little kitten. You wrote ‘I love
Gabriel’ all over your notebooks in primary.”
Savannah blanched and then she blushed. For some incredible reason, she’d thought her
schoolgirl crush on Gabriel had been a secret. Savannah had thought wrong.
When Savannah stayed silent (and red), Gabriel laughed and patted her on the back. “Oh, it’s

The night was cool and clear. The stars seemed to shine brighter in the sky than ever before

My journey as an immigrant to the United States started in 1988 with my husband, my dreams, aspiration and hope. We adapted to the American way of life and was able to build our American dream. Our American born children, Moustafa and Dena, have incorporated their heritage with American culture and are committed to education and helping others in the community. Upon arrival to the United States, I worked as a waitress while pursuing my degree. In 1992, I obtained my master’s degree in nursing and began my career as a nurse practitioner. We all share different challenges. The important thing is to never give up. Persistence is a great quality and one that we should all look to acquire. In 2013, I wrote two books on leadership and empowerment while pursuing my Doctoral degree. In 2015, I faced a real test of courage, I felt betrayed from within—I was diagnosed with cancer. I know that we all have struggles that we want to face on our own behind closed doors; we feel that if people were to discover them, we would be vulnerable and never looked at the same way. I finally mastered the courage to stand before everyone and share my daily struggles. While doing chemotherapy, I attended classes for my doctorate and worked part-time. I would be lying if I said I woke up every day feeling positive. However, I pushed through because that was the only option I had. I pursued the things that fulfilled my mind and wellbeing.
