I
have been writing since I was sixteen years old and love to write
both horror and romantic suspense. I think there have been many
influences within my life that has set me on the path that I can not
help but walk. A few of those names consist of Karen Rose, Lisa
Gardener, Nora Roberts, Cynthia Eden, Catherine Anderson, Laura
Griffin, Andrea Kane, and Lisa Jackson, just to name a few. This list
by no means defines by own writing but they have indeed influenced my
desire to live outside of my own world and to create the thrill of my
dreams. I live on 40 + acres in the SHOW ME state with my six year
old daughter, with the wonderful addition of four dogs and a handful
of chickens. The weather is unpredictable, but the surrounding beauty
of the country helps my creativity as I sit on my top deck with my
laptop and coffee close by.
Stranded on Vail Mountain Excerpt:
Stephen saw the woman leaning against the wall at the bottom of the cavern,
shivering but alive, and felt a relief like none other knowing he had made it.
There had been times in the last two hours when he had thought he wouldn’t
find
her, and his own chances of survival were diminishing, especially with the
blizzard in full swing. Visibility was zero, and the trek down the mountain was
going to be a bitch for one, let alone for two. It had been close to five hours
since
the woman had gone missing. Usually, the allotted time of retrieval on rescues
was two hours, but he wasn’t complaining.
She was alive, at least for the moment. It hadn’t been a long drop, but it was
the steep incline that had trapped her.
He yelled down at her, but he didn’t think she heard him over the wind.
He saw her eyes widen in her pale face and knew she had at least spotted
him. Relief filled her eyes as they met his. He threw down the rope and tied it to
a
thick tree that stood just a few feet away.
He almost lost his footing on the way back to the edge and fell to his knees,
striking his left on a hidden rock. Cursing, he moved his leg cautiously and
stood
up. With slow steps, he took hold of the rope and swung his legs, propelling
himself over the icy side. His spiked boots dug into the ice, keeping him stable
as he made his way down to her.
He reached the bottom and let go of the rope to walk over to the woman,
kneeling down beside her.
His eyes scanned her slender body, and he didn’t like what he saw. Pale and
trembling, her lips were turning blue.
Fuck.
“Are you hurt?”
Please say no, please say no, please say no…
She nodded with a jerky movement and looked down at her right leg.
Double fuck.
He followed her gaze but didn’t see a break.
“Sprain?”
“Y-y-yes.” Her voice was scratchy and low, her words slurred.
He swore, knowing her blue lips and pasty, white skin meant the woman was
close to hypothermia.
Come on, damn it. I need a break!
Stephen spotted dried blood on her forehead and flinched imaging her fall.
The incline wasn’t something to laugh at even though it hadn’t been far. Neither
was a head injury. They didn’t have time for him to check her over. He did a
quick sweep with his hand over her head and neck and found she was bleeding
at
the back of her head.“My name is Stephen Brockheart, and I’m a park ranger for the resort. Can
you stand?”
She nodded again, and he helped her get to her feet, putting all of her weight
on the left leg.
They looked up. Stephen glanced around the cavern, his lips tight, and
looked to the woman, meeting her eyes straight on. “We won’t survive the cold
if
we don’t try to get down the mountain.”
The woman stared at him, her eyes worried and big. But then something
happened, stunning him and gaining his respect. He saw determination light up
her blue eyes, a level of strength he hadn’t seen before in any woman’s eyes.
She pulled away from his hold and straightened her shoulders. “Let’s go,”
she said, her voice soft but determined, and somehow he understood.
They were going to make it or die trying.
He stared down at her a few more seconds and then nodded, putting the rope
around her slim waist and tying it securely before taking the rope and tying
them
together. He didn’t want her passing out and falling again.
Giving it a tug, he made sure it was still tied tautly on the tree.
He grabbed the end of the rope and fastened it around himself with a tight
knot.
“Piggyback time. Wrap your arms around my neck and your legs around my
waist.”
With her ankle, she wouldn’t be able to climb out, not by herself.
She hesitated and then slowly wrapped her arms around his neck and got on
his back.
He knew she was tired, probably had a concussion, and no doubt dehydrated
with hypothermia setting in, but they didn’t have a choice.
They needed to get back to the resort if they were going to survive, but it was
going to be damn close. It was already hard to see as night descended.
With her firmly tied to him and on his back, he jumped up and dug his spikes
into the ice. He slowly progressed, inching himself up the side of the cliff, the
woman holding on tightly.
After what seemed like forever, they made it to the top, and he collapsed on
his side, his breathing ragged and harsh. He was careful not to crush her. The
wind was strong, the bite of the chill stinging the flesh. Stephen drew off his
face
mask and handed it to her. She took it gratefully and put it on, covering all but
her eyes and mouth. He grabbed an extra one from his pack and slid it on.
He stood up, grabbed her around her waist, and they headed down the
mountain, fighting the wind that seemed to be pushing them back. The struggle
lay in putting one foot in front of the other. They battled not only the wind but
the snow that was rapidly building up. It was almost knee deep with more falling
steadily.
He could see pain written all over her pinched, pale face. Cursing, he
wrapped his arms around her lifting her up. He thought he heard her gasp but

ignored it as he continued, the wind and snow beating at his back.

Red Harvest
The
Haunted Hollow Chronicles #1
by
Patrick C. Greene

Genre: Horror

In the epic tradition of
Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Jonathan Maberry, a chilling new
masterwork of small-town evil, centuries-old traditions, and
newly-risen terror…
Red Harvest
Every year at harvest
time, something strange and wonderful happens in the sleepy farm
community of Ember Hollow. It comes alive. Truckloads
of pumpkins are sent off to be carved into lanterns. Children
scramble to create the creepiest, scariest costumes. Parents stock up
on candy and prepare for the town’s celebrated Pumpkin Parade. And
then there is Devil’s Night . . .
But this year, something
is different. Some of the citizens are experiencing dark, disturbing
visions. Others are beginning to wonder if they’re losing their
minds, or maybe their souls. One newly sober singer with the voice of
a fallen angel is tempted to make a deal that will seal his fate. And
one very odd boy is kept locked in a shed by his family—for reasons
too horrible to imagine . . .
Whatever is happening to
this town, they’re going to make it through this Halloween. Even
if it kills them . . .

Patrick C. Greene is

Carolina. He is the author of the novels Progeny and The
Crimson Calling
, as well as numerous short stories featured in

A Preamble
“Trick or treat! Rotten meat! That is what we want to eat!” One of the troupe of tweens was out of
harmony.
“Hm.” Lola, costumed in a short leather nun’s habit, smiled and saluted the kids with her wine glass.
She was decidedly not mortified by this variation of the traditional rhyme, and only mildly amused, more
interested in the TV party a few rooms away. “Well, no rotten meat I’m afraid, but I think I still have a
few…”
She twisted almost sideways and presented a near-empty candy bowl from just inside, dumping the last
of the treats into the bags and buckets. “Here you go, kiddies!”
Lola ignored the disappointed expressions the kids cast at her and at one another, her bleary gaze
drawn to the figure standing across the street, just outside a vague circle of street light.
The figure, wearing an odd costume of rainbow fright wig, Lone Ranger–style eye mask, and an
oversized brown raincoat, wasn’t moving, except for his shoulders, which rose and fell as if from
suppressed laughter. He hunched over and covered his mouth with both hands, like a toddler who had
just stolen a cookie. Did he think she couldn’t see him? How silly.
“Is this all you got, lady?” asked the kid in the…whichever superhero wore black tights with green trim.
She had stopped trying to keep up.
“Um, well…” She looked inside again. “No more candy,” she said. “But how about this for your
chaperone?”
From the four canisters of silly string beside the candy bowl—in the event of a prank war—she held one
over the heads of the children, to offer it to the man on the street. But he was gone.
“Where’s your grown-up?” she asked.
The kids turned to see what she meant. “What grown-up? We’re old enough to be without,” explained a
rubber-worm-infested zombie, quite indignantly.
Her wine glass was empty. She didn’t care about the funny skulker anymore.
“Okeydoke, then,” she said. “Have at it!” She tossed the silly string at the group, then half waved, half
shooed, until they shuffled away. Before closing the door, she decided to blow out the jack-o’-lantern.
Lola re-wined her glass and started back to the den to rejoin her friends in giving old horror movies the
MST3K treatment. She was stopped by the doorbell. She stepped to the door, unsteady on her spike heels. “Sorry! All out! Happy Halloween!”
She moved to walk away but stopped upon hearing a giggle—silly yet eerie—just outside the door.
“Hey!” she shouted. “You better not be TPing our lawn out there!”
The doorbell rang again.
“Okay!” Lola grabbed a can of silly string. “I warned you!”
She yanked open the door and poised the canister, finding only blowing leaves, on and all around the
front stoop.
She listened for the sound of giggling or leaves crunching under running feet, bracing for a good hearty
“Boo!” as well.
“Ding dong ditch,” she muttered. “Not even a flaming bag of doggy doo. Kids these days…”
She closed the door—and felt the icy tingle of intuition. Something was very, very wrong.
She turned fast.
It was the man from across the street, now less than two feet away.
He had entered through the rear kitchen door.
The fright wig he was wearing, vaguely haloed by the hallway, did its job. From there down, it only got
worse.
His Lone Ranger–style mask framed eyes filled with something like joy—but more like hopeless insanity.
His face was white, as if bleached.
Then there was the blood.
Streams of it ran down gaunt cheeks to cracked smiling lips from the staples that held the mask on.
The figure raised a meat cleaver with a blade the size of a notebook.
Lola’s heart skipped a beat, until she saw that the weapon was mere plastic—a toy. Lola smiled, issuing a
relieved, “Whew!”
“So funny, Greg.” She leaned forward to look more closely at him. “Where’s the ol’ ball and chain?”
As she reached for his mask, the figure stepped back from her grasp. He lowered the cleaver and slid the
toy plastic blade—merely an improvised sheath—off of a very shiny, very real butcher knife blade.

The oversized trick-or-treater displayed the implement.
“Oh, my God, Greg.” Lola rolled her eyes and raised both middle fingers.
The trickster slashed the knife in a sideways arc, severing the fingers.
She was too breathless to scream, trying to reconcile the sight of her shortened digits and angry that
Greg had taken his little joke this far.
Not-Greg squatted to gather the fingers and drop them into his treat bag.
Trying to back away from her own ruined hand, Lola fell like a toddler onto her rump, sucking breath for
a scream she would never have time to release.

Chapter 1
Below Will Novak’s balcony, the final day of Mardi Gras was in full swing. Crowds walked along the
narrow width of Bourbon Street, laughing and talking and enjoying the famous New Orleans celebration.
The French Quarter was alive with excitement and good cheer, which put police on alert for inevitable
drunken altercations. That’s why Novak was watching. From where he sat in a chair drawn close to the
wrought-iron rail, he could see several drunks stumbling around inside the crowd and others who
looked well on their way to inebriation. His apartment was at the top end of Bourbon Street, so the
riotous mass moved down the street in one direction like ants headed to a piece of pecan pie. Across
the street, a jazz band was playing, filling the late night with the sounds of saxophone, piano, and bass
fiddle.
Novak enjoyed the music, thinking the band was pretty good, as he swept his binoculars over the
boisterous crowd as it moved along the ancient street with its old-fashioned lampposts and multitude of
bars and novelty shops. The New Orleans Police Department had hired him on a temporary basis to spot
probable troublemakers and report their locations to street cops. He’d been at it for a long time.
Glancing at his watch, he found it was almost midnight. Eventually all the fun going on now would wane
and the people would gradually disperse, but not yet. Maybe in another hour or two. He hoped so. He
was dead tired.
Late February in south Louisiana was sometimes chilly; he had put on a leather jacket because of the nip
in the air. The cold was not bothering anybody else, who kept warm by drinking beer and the sheer
exhilaration of the moment. Unfortunately, nobody was calling it a night yet. Pushing, shoving, and hair-
trigger, testosterone-fueled fistfights had been a regular occurrence all week long. At such occasions,
Novak always watched first for the glint of steel. Knives were easily hidden under coats. This late hour
was when either guns or knives were apt to be whipped out and innocent passersby hurt. Novak wasn’t
the only observer on the street. There were many others just like him with bird’s-eye views of the
action. He leaned back in his chair and adjusted his earpiece and microphone headset.
Loud shouts caught his attention, and he swung the glasses to a commotion starting up right across the
street. A young woman stood high on a second-floor balcony opposite him. She looked as if she was
smashed but didn’t know it yet. She was having a good old time, giggling and waving at the men below
her on the street. A crowd had already gathered, mainly because she kept pulling up her sweatshirt and
showing her bare breasts. The guys below hooted and clapped and sent forth all manner of
encouragement. She obliged their fervor by whipping the sweatshirt off over her head and shimmying
for anybody inclined to take a look.
Skin shows were not unusual during Mardi Gras week. The guy standing on the balcony with her didn’t
appear to mind much, flinging off his own shirt in a show of support. His hairy chest didn’t garner as
much interest. Both leaned over the railing, blowing kisses and tossing strings of colorful beads to their
drunken admirers, which immediately caused fights for possession. People were just damn stupid
sometimes, but no real harm was done with something like that. He called in the incident. A two-team
unit was dispatched to break up the crowd below, and then they’d have to climb the narrow interior
stairs to the woman’s apartment and order her to cover herself or go to jail. They had already warnedthe same woman earlier that evening. They might arrest her this time. Novak didn’t care much, one way
or the other. He riveted his attention back on the street. Many people carried red Solo cups so they
could guzzle beer while they walked. Mardi Gras had always been a big drunken party and a giant
headache for the NOPD. Tonight was no exception.
Novak was working solo. He hadn’t been on a gig by himself in a while, not since he’d signed up with
Claire Morgan’s private investigation firm. His partner was unavailable, off to Italy with her husband,
Nicholas Black. They had been tied up in Rome for days now, fighting Italian government red tape as
they tried to adopt a ten-year-old boy named Rico. His parents had been murdered during a particularly
bad case that Novak had been involved in, and since it had wrapped up, Claire and Black had given the
kid a good home. They wanted him to stay there.
They were due back soon, though, and Novak was glad. He missed Claire. She was quite a woman, all
things considered: tall, natural blond, athletic, good-looking, and sexy without knowing it. More
important, she was a damn good detective and a damn good friend. He could count on her when things
got sticky. Compared to most of their cases, tonight’s gig was a breeze. Sitting in his own apartment
watching people having fun was something he didn’t usually mind.

After being left in the dark for all of her life, Maura’s father,

Maxwell, has finally returned to reveal sinister family secrets Maura
could never have dreamed possible—including his revelation that she
is one of The Born. But his daughter soon discovers both he and her
mother are keeping pieces of her reality hidden, still. As Maura
struggles to unravel the mysteries surrounding her new existence and
discover every piece of the cryptic puzzle, life appears intent on
casting stumbling blocks across her path with every step forward.

Tragedy seems to stalk Maura, and those
around her, as she stumbles along,
altering the young changeling’s family, just when they have all
come back together. The changes left in its wake could be for the
better, or may threaten their existence, entirely.
With the arrival of Christmas comes the
opportunity for Maura to draw
close to everyone she loves—and finally reunite with Ron, the man
she loves. But permanence has always eluded her, and in her current
state of flux this pattern endures, as fate seems intent on snapping
the threads that bind her to those she holds most dear. Maxwell’s
good intentions pave a road for Maura, littered with misery, while
her mother, Caelyn’s, desire to shield her family from pain may
tear her away from them, altogether. The perfect happiness in the
young vampire’s grasp is so easily swept away and dragged under,
out of reach. Can Maura erupt from the darkness and confusion to
break the surface and find the life she’s always dreamed of?
In the
midst of chaos, assistance materializes in the form of another of
her kind—ephemerally beautiful, yet explosively volatile, this new
vampire may prove capable of unlocking the puzzle-box Maxwell seems
intent on securing from her sight. Maura will discover the darkest
parts of herself in her quest to understand the being she is destined
to become. Her newfound friend has some shady intentions of his
own—such as thwarting the love that has grown between Maura and
Ron. Following in the wake of the impulsive vampire’s misguided
instruction may further pull a naive Maura down into the depths of
ultimate despair, heartbreak…and even destruction.

absence of her supernaturally-destined mate, Ron…whose
disappearance delivers grave consequences Maura would have never
dreamed possible…
Despised by her vampire cousin, Aldiva, for reasons Maura cannot yet
comprehend, the young changeling will be forced to guard her back
with every step, as she comes to realize this member of her vampire
family would love nothing more than to bring about her demise.
Aldiva’s wrath calls forth other members from both Vancouver
covens, forcing them to rush to Maura’s aid—even though her
father, their king, has expressly forbidden the other vampires to
initiate contact with his daughter. Will her extended family on
Vancouver Island obey, abandoning Maura to her doom, or will they
instead rebel against Maxwell’s wishes in order to save her life?
In addition to the menace personified in her unsolicited enemy, the
unlikely vampire princess will find herself drowning as she is pulled
down into the depths of a far more devastating crisis…one which may
condemn her to a fate she considers much more undesirable than death.
But in order to tear herself free from the deadly pull which is
drawing her under, Maura must enlist the help of her preternatural
family, exposing her newfound friends to a danger none of them have
ever had the misfortune to face before. Can she be saved or will the
riptide drag Maura under…along with those she loves the most…

Praise for
Riptide:
“I will scream it from the
rooftops how much I love this series.”
“I can only say that Riptide is one of the best modern vampire stories I
have ever read, and I read them all from Stephen King to Ann Rice to
Stephenie Meyer.”
“Riptide was action packed and the fight scenes were well written but
more
than that it was the story of family and love, of taking
responsibility, and dealing with hate when all sane avenues fail.”
“The lore is superb, as is the writing. I can’t wait to catch up with
Maura again!”

the world save many innocent lives.
It was too late then… He was ringing the doorbell. He looked so much braver than I felt. I could see the
anger that had crept back into him in the hard set of his lips, the flash in his dark eyes.
Caelyn had torn the door open immediately, anxiety all over her face. She looked at Ron, dumbfounded.
She must have then caught sight of some part of me, because she instantly peered around his shoulder
to find me standing meekly behind him, clad only in a boy’s shirt that just barely cleared my hips.
“Maura?! What the…” Her eyes fairly popped with dismayed astonishment.
“Hi, Mom.” What an asinine thing to say. I should have at least started with “I’m okay.”
Caelyn just stood there with her mouth hanging open. I felt the fear turn over, like a living thing in my
stomach. How was I going to survive our confrontation? How could I even begin to explain everything
that had happened that night?
Luckily, I had Ron. “Hi, um, Ms. DeLuca.” He started out sounding very shy, but as my mother’s brows
furrowed closer together, he put a stronger edge to his voice. “I came to bring Maura home.” She was
still scowling.
“Um…I’m Ron by the way.” He put his hand out to her. She ignored that entirely.
My mother’s glare was venomous. “Maura! Get in the house this instant!”
Oh boy… She thought Ron was at fault for whatever imagined atrocities were going through her brain
right at the moment.
“Mom!” I was desperate to put everything right, despite how much trouble I knew I’d be in. “You have it
all wrong!”
“I said GET IN THE HOUSE!” she screamed at me, absolute fury flying from her eyes. I’d never seen her
so angry before, and I was terrified. “Do I need to ask you again?”
“N-n-no ma’am,” I stuttered. I hurried past Ron, but not without looking up at him with apology in my
eyes. I felt horrible for his being put in the middle, just because he’d happened to save my life.
Once inside, I steeled myself for another attempt at speaking to my mother. “Mom, will you please just
let me…”
“Don’t say anything, Maura.” Her voice shook. “Do you have any idea what you’ve put me through
tonight?”
I was confused then. Did she want me to stay quiet or answer her question?
Ron saved me again. “I think I can explain.” He took a tentative step onto the living room carpet.
I didn’t like the way Caelyn’s head snapped around when she looked at him. “What was your name
again?” she asked viciously.I saw him swallow hard as he answered, “Ron.”
She turned on him then. “Well, Ron!” It sounded like she’d chewed on his name before spitting the one
syllable out. “Do you mind telling me why it is you’re out with my daughter when she’s supposed to be
with Katie Parker? And after you’ve answered that, I’d really love to know why you would bring her
home wearing only that!!” She pointed the index finger of her shaking hand at me, standing on the
plush blue carpet next to our couch, holding onto its arm for support, my knees knocking together.
Ron went a little pale… I couldn’t stand to see my hero wrongly accused.
“Mom! Listen to me! If-if it weren’t for him, for Ron…Mom, I’d be dead right now!” I shouted all the
words out quickly before she had a chance to silence me again.

If I’m to be perfectly honest, one of the things that peaked my interest about this book was the fact that it was set in Indiana, Pennsylvania.   Indiana is not far from my home, and in fact, I worked in Indiana for a while.  It was neat to see the characters mentioning regional places like Eat n’ Park in the book.

Thankfully, the book was also a good read. I’m typically a fan of paranormal books especially when dealing with certain creatures.  This book gives a different storyline I’m not used to hearing on the discovery of being one of these creatures.  The reader has an idea  of what’s going on with the main character but over half-way through the book the main character does not.

The author gives wonderful descriptions of most the characters so you can get a pretty good picture in your head as the story goes along.  The scene changes were smooth and made sense.  The descriptions of what is happening to the main character Maura make it apparent to the reader. We just don’t know why and we don’t know the secrets her mother is keeping for a good part of the book. Add in a touch of romance and longing and it’s a book I didn’t want to put down.

I have actually recommended this book to some local friends who also were intrigue by the Indiana, PA setting.

Love Lies Bleeding: An Excerpt
Aspasía S. BissasMara listened as Lee paused outside the door; she supposed he was waiting for a reaction to his
abrupt departure. She didn’t give him one. After a while his footsteps moved away and she was
left fuming. She wasn’t vexed by his lack of faith in her methods, but by his lack of faith in her.
She tried delving into her books and at least getting some work done, but it was no use. All
she could think of was their argument, his stubbornness, and her own uncertainty about what to
do next. Could she really leave without him? She hoped it was a decision she wouldn’t have to
make, one he wouldn’t make her make.
Lost in thought, she wasn’t sure how much time had passed when she heard a scraping
sound at the front door. Was Lee back already? She’d expected him to be gone for hours,
possibly until morning. Maybe he was having his own second thoughts about their fight. She
couldn’t hold back a smile as she threw open the door.
“I hope this means we get to make up n—”
She was sent flying into the wall.
