Chapter 1

Pain blossomed in my head as a shudder ran through the torpor tube that encased me. My eyes
were heavy, and I had to fight to open them against the grogginess of hibernation. The tube shook
violently again. A cold sweat broke out across my skin, and I gasped for air. What was happening?
My hands trembled as I carefully tugged at the thin plastic tube in my nose that would deliver
the hibernation serum straight to my brain. I gagged as the tube slowly slid free, like a worm
wriggling inside my head. There was a soft hiss of air as my tube popped open.
“Whoa! Whoa! Slow down, Laure.” A firm hand grabbed ahold of me as I went to pry off the
other tubes and wires that were attached to my body. Sirens assaulted my ears, causing me to
wince and draw away from the voice as I tried to retreat to the safety of my tube.
“Wha-What’s going on?” My voice cracked as I spoke, dry and weak from lack of use.
As my body sagged, the hands helped guide me onto the floor. I always hated waking up. It was
the worst part of the cycle. Though I had been in hibernation for six months, I felt as though I had
been awake for days on end. My muscles protested every movement. My mind begged for sleep.
When I tried to open my eyes again, the lights stung. Something wasn’t right. Cautiously, I
cracked one eye open. Red lights flashed through the long corridor-like room. Before I could glimpse
much more, the burning in my eyes became overwhelming, and I closed them again. With every bit
of strength I had, I pried them back open. They darted around the room, trying to take in as much
detail as they could before I was forced to close them again. Others were being helped out of their
tubes.
“What is going on?” This wasn’t how we were supposed to be woken up. The lights weren’t
right. We weren’t all woken up at once. “How long has it been?”
“There has been an… incident. You’re being woken up early.”
“Incident? What do you mean? How early?” My head swam as I tried to sit up, the ground
beneath me shifting unsteadily. My stomach flip-flopped, giving me only a moment’s notice before
the bile rose in my throat.
“Critical system failure. All personnel report to the bridge,” a calm, computerized voice stated
as I coughed and spat the bile onto the floor.
I was grateful that I had finally learned to pull my ash-blonde mane back into a ponytail before
entering hibernation. Squeezing my eyes shut, I willed the world to stop spinning beneath me, to
right itself so I could stand up.
“Critical system failure. All personnel report to the bridge.”
“What happened?” I demanded, finally looking up at the woman who hovered over me. Her
face was tight and her mouth set into a grim line.
“The ship needs to go planetside. Now.”
All I could do was blink back at the woman as my mind tried to process what she had just told
me. Planetside? Had they finally found a planet?
“What do you mean now?” I shook my head and instantly regretted the movement.
“Pull yourself together,” she said curtly. “Commander Nash of the forty-eighth cycle wants your
cycle on the bridge sooner rather than later.”
Taking a few deep breaths, I gripped the torpor tube and pulled myself to my feet. The ship
shuddered again. I closed my eyes as the rocking threatened to dissolve what little stability I had
mustered. Hisses punctuated the wailing of the sirens as more tubes popped open around me.
“Critical system failure. All personnel report to the bridge.”
I looked around the room for others from my cycle. Some were already on their feet, though
shaky as I was. Others were on the ground, struggling through the haze of hibernation. Some tubes
were still unopened. Six tubes down and across the aisle, Cern was pulling himself to his feet. Short,
fuzzy jet-black hair covered his head. Before each hibernation cycle, he would shave his head and
face like many of the other male colonists. He always awoke with a bit of fuzzy hair, but he didn’t
have to worry about it becoming brittle like I did. Sometimes, I envied him for that. His usually tan
skin was pale as he struggled to his feet. Our eyes met, and I smiled weakly at him. He nodded back
before falling to the ground and puking.

I pushed myself away from my tube toward Cern. “Come on.” I patted his back encouragingly,
not looking at him for fear that my own stomach would join in sympathy. “We have to get going.”
“What is going on?” Cern wiped his mouth on his sleeve. “This is a shitty wake-up call.”
“I don’t know.” I managed to stop myself before I shook my head again.
“Come on,” a man bellowed from near the door. “Let’s get to the bridge. The commander is
waiting.”
I wrapped an arm around Cern, and he wrapped an arm around me. Others were pulling
themselves up and helping to support each other as well. Together, we moved through the large
doors that led out to the rest of the ship. The door separated in the center and slid into the wall as
we approached. As we stepped out, the ship shuddered once again, sending Cern and me sprawling
to the floor. We pushed ourselves back up, and together, we followed the man through the long
corridors to the bridge.
The crewmembers of cycle ten clung to each other for support as they helped each other
toward the bridge. No one groaned. No one complained. We were the last. The last of humanity. If
the ship was lost, then so was our species.
The journey to the bridge was grueling on legs fresh out of hibernation. I wanted nothing more
than to crawl into bed and sleep. But this wasn’t the time.
As we poured into the bridge, anxious eyes turned to stare at us. I self-consciously patted down
my hair and smoothed a hand over my hibernation suit as we stood before the entirety of another
cycle. We, the tenth cycle, were supposed to be the strongest humanity had to offer. Bred to fight
and survive in unfamiliar terrains, we were the ones who would first set foot on any new planet. Yet
we looked no better than death warmed over. Hibernation didn’t care who we were. It rendered us as
weak as anyone else.
“Good. You’re all here.” A woman gave our group a curt nod, stepping forward. A gold oak leaf
glimmered on her lapel.
“Commander Nash,” their escort addressed the stern woman, “these are the colonists from
cycle ten, as you requested.” The woman’s icy-blue stare swept over the two hundred new faces
before her.
“Thank you.” She dismissed the man with a wave before she spun on her heel to address the
crowd before her. Suddenly, her shoulder slumped. The strong, intimidating woman from seconds
before looked tired and afraid.
“Three days ago, cycle forty-eight found a planet. One that seemed perfect and habitable. The
one.” She paused, her eyes dancing back and forth as she ran through the events of the last few
days. “Thirty-seven minutes ago, Iotova’s largest moon was struck by an asteroid roughly sixty
kilometers in diameter. The collision sent out a cloud of debris several hundred miles wide. Being so
close to the impact, the ship quickly entered the debris field.” The commander’s gaze fell to the floor,
her shoulders slumping. “We have sustained heavy damage. Probably the worst of which is that our
radiation shielding has been punctured…in numerous places.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. My grip on Cern’s arm tightened, and he squeezed my
hand. Without radiation shielding, we were as good as dead. However, death wouldn’t come quickly.
We would all live long enough to get sick. We would struggle for weeks or months in excruciating
pain before death welcomed us, and there would be nowhere we could escape.
“To those of cycle ten,” the commander’s words cut through the crowd, “we are not entirely
without hope. You are here because it is time for you to fulfill your duties. For the last seven days,
we have been orbiting Iotova.” A sad, hesitant smile crept to her lips. “It is everything we have been
searching for. A planet we can call home again.”
“A planet.” Cern breathed the word, his voice shaking. I shifted, trying to get a better view of the
commander as excitement invigorated my tired muscles.

HI! Just to tell you a bit about myself. I have lived in Seattle, WA most of my life however I was raised in New York and spent summers in Cape May, NJ. Most of my work is set on the beaches and beach towns of the Jersey Shore. I wrote my first novel when I was thirteen years old and continued to write poetry and short stories for the following years. I have had articles and papers published as well as photographs that were published in a book entitled “Rock and Roll Memorabilia II”. I hold an AA degree in Business Management. I never obtained a degree in Literary Arts or Writing per se but I feel I come by my writing talent organically as William Shakespeare is my 1st cousin 12 times removed. “An Unexpected Gift” is my debut novel. Like Janie, the main character in the novel, I was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism at the age of forty-eight however I am proud to share this diagnosis with Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emily Dickenson as well as many others. I see my autism as a gift from God. It has given me a high intellect and innate talent that I use as a tool to enlighten the rest of the world to the plight of adults with autism. Like many people on the spectrum, I never married or had children which is sadly my greatest regret. I currently live with my wonderful sister Kendra and my three cats Tyler, Tabitha and Teddy in Spokane, WA. I am planning to move back to the New Jersey Shore as soon as possible. Seagulls were calling her outside the windows. Their cries welcomed Janie home. She felt
she could not rest in that house without hearing their voices high in the morning breeze outside.
They were brazen and never shut up. She could relate to that; they were her kind of bird. Their
sharp squawks soothed her as they always did. The Cape May beach, light from the lighthouse,
and those crazy birds, was all she needed to remain calm and content.

Bull riders might be crazy, but when chasing a slot for the Finals, they were also
crazed—as in irrational, wired, scared. Not of the bull but of losing the slot that would bring
them more money in ten days than they’d earned all year.
Lonnie Kasin knew that because those words described exactly how he felt as he sat on
the metal railings overlooking the chutes, one of which would hold the beast he’d be riding in a
few minutes.
He breathed in the familiar scent of warm hides and acrid manure, dusty horses and
dustier hay as he scanned bleachers crammed with locals in cowboy hats and boots who had
come out on a warm Saturday evening in August for a little fun and entertainment. No doubt
some of those who ran this rodeo to benefit the local schools looked forward to this night all
year. For those who competed, it was just one more stop in a long list of summer rodeos.
The purse wasn’t huge, a little over a thousand if he won, but it all added up. At least that
was what he told himself as he bounced from town to town, crisscrossing the West in search of a
win. And he had to keep winning. Even at smaller rodeos like this one. Even though tonight his
mind kept drifting to something else…or rather someone else.
Metal slammed against metal as the first bull was loaded. Bull rider Paulo Santos had
drawn him, and though Paulo was in the top three so far this year and a shoo-in to make the
Finals, the bull wasn’t. In fact, the bull Lonnie would be riding was the best of this rodeo’s lot,
giving him a good chance at first place—if he stayed on.
The gate opened. Paulo hung on as the timer counted down, and Lonnie’s pulse sped up.
Paulo made the buzzer and waited for the score. An eighty-two. A good but, thankfully, beatable
score.
This was what he loved, what he lived for. If he could just win enough this season to
make it to the Finals, all his problems would be solved. Except one. And nothing and no one
could solve that.
Not even the pretty little blonde he was bound to see tomorrow at his friend’s wedding.
Since he’d found out that Trace Martin and Haylee Dennis would be tying the knot, thoughts of
Livvy Dennis, Haylee’s sister, had been screwing up his concentration. He’d met her once, but
with someone like Livvy, once was all it took, because no one, at least no red-blooded male,
would ever forget her.
From her tourist-crazy turquoise boots and sexy short-shorts to her golden hair and
mischievous blue eyes, she’d been zooming around his mind like a fly he couldn’t catch.
He wasn’t looking for much, just a little respite from the drumbeat of wins and losses that
pounded his mind with buck-off percentages and bull stats. Anyone who knew him knew he
wasn’t relationship material. Didn’t do well with commitment. Never stayed long in one place.
Hell, he didn’t even have a place he called home, living out of a suitcase and mooching off of
friends to keep the loneliness at bay.
“Your bull’s in the chute.” Chance Cochran’s sharp elbow struck Lonnie’s side. “You
okay?”
“Course I’m okay.” He would be if he stopped thinking about what he couldn’t have and
concentrated on what he could have—a shot at the Finals and maybe one night with a cute and
sassy blonde.
Lonnie scrambled over the top of the railings to the pen containing his bull, leaving
Chance to follow. Cochran had already competed in saddle bronc, placing third. Lonnie needed
to place first because, unlike Chance, who was solidly in the top five in saddle bronc, Lonnie was
sixteenth. Meaning he’d need to take first place as many times as he could to get on and stay on
the fifteen-man Finals roster for the ten-day rodeo event in December.
“You’ve got little Shane’s picture loaded?” Lonnie asked as he settled on the railing
above his bull.
Chance heaved a sigh from behind. “Stupid superstition.”
“Not stupid. Each time I’ve looked at your little son’s face, it has brought me luck. I’m
not about to change things up now. Besides, I’m his godfather and proud of him.”
Chance held up his phone and angled the screen. “I feel like a goddamn fool doing this
every time you get on a bull. Everyone probably thinks I’m one of those jackass fathers who
can’t stop talking about his kid.”
Lonnie gazed at the cherub face of a boy almost a year old whose broad smile and bright-
blue eyes anchored Lonnie in a way nothing else did. Chance’s son would likely be the closet
he’d ever get to having a family. Gazing at little Shane’s picture in the moment before he got on
the bull, he could at least pretend someone cared.
“You were one of those jackass fathers when you first showed me this picture at the start
of the season, and that began my winning streak. May not win every time, but I also haven’t
sustained a season-ending injury. So now you’ve got to keep doing it until the season is over,
which is only another month or so. Besides, what are friends for if not to make you look stupid?”
Lonnie shifted his gaze to the bull with a murderous look in its eye.
“You can get rid of me after eight seconds,” he told the bull. “Just give me a good ride.”
He lowered himself onto the bull, and as he felt the brawn of the animal under his butt,
adrenaline pumped into his veins in a rush worthy of an addict’s needle. The bull shifted. Lonnie
tugged on his rope, wrapped it tighter around his hand, and nodded. The gate opened.

Alexander:
After a set of passing headlights from the street below moves across Elizabeth’s
bedroom, I step inside. Her bed faces two tall windows covered in delicate floor-length drapes
that probably billow softly in summer breezes. My back straightens, stiff and rigid when I see
her slender sleeping body, fully clothed, laid out over the covers—a sign of extreme
exhaustion. I don’t sense any lingering fear, however.
Only desire.
But for what?
For whom?
A soft step closer, I notice she’s wearing the skirt and blouse from earlier today. My
scent must still cling to the fabric.
Her hair cascades off the side of the bed like a golden waterfall. It wears away my
resolve and draws me closer to her.
Against my better judgement, I reach out to touch the soft, silky strands. What must it
feel like to be twisted around my fingers while I’m behind her, her ass pressed firmly up
against me. The thought of what is underneath her skirt makes my cock throb.
Not good.

Knowing full well the gods can’t be trusted, Euryale agrees to take on a reluctant partner to track down whoever is murdering a growing number of gods. A murderer no one cared about until the killings edged uncomfortably close to bigger and bigger pantheons. Tracking the murderers down is the price she has to pay for her newly restored form—and that of her two equally cursed sisters. Asher’s unusual gift for eerily horrific sound effects make him a highly sought-after voiceover artist. While he keeps a low profile, there has always been a ticking time bomb in the form of the bargain between his banshee mother and his father, the god Ares. It’s time to pay up—or pay with his life. As Euryale and Asher dance around their mutual mistrust, the friction ignites a fire of unexpected attraction. But love is almost as impossible as the dangerous task ahead. Because even if the murderers don’t stab them in the back, the fickle gods certainly will. Goodreads * Amazon

Claire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As a teenager she started out reading fantasy and science fiction, but her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s. A native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more than twenty miles from the ocean. In college she studied acting with a minor in creative writing. In hindsight she should have flipped course studies. Before she was published, she sold books on eBay and discovered some of her favorite authors by sampling the goods, which was the perfect solution. Claire has many book-irons in the fire, most notably her urban fantasy series, The Elementals’ Challenge series, but writes contemporary and shifter romances as well as. While she’s not a movie mogul or actor, she does work in the film industry with her office firmly situated in the 90210 district of Hollywood. Prone to break out into song, she is quick on feet and just as quick with snappy dialogue. In addition to writing she does animal rescue, reads, and goes to movies. She loves to hear from fans, so feel free to drop her a line. Website * Facebook * Twitter * Bookbub * Amazon * Goodreads $50 Amazon – 1 winner, ebook of Gorgon’s Price – 2 winners

Euryale’s tone was challenging, and the goddess raised an eyebrow. Asher had to remind
himself that Euryale, too, was a goddess.
“We cannot afford for him to make a hash of it. If he does, then the banshees must take
up the battle. This cannot go unanswered. Asher, you will find help in unexpected locations. We
are many places where people do not think we can be. Too often, older women are disregarded.
It is to our benefit to remain, as you Americans say, under the radar. You may need allies and we
will provide them. Just don’t eff it up.”
That seemed to satisfy his mother, although she was still stiff with indignation at his side.
He could feel a wail growing in his throat, a desire to howl at their queen, but he resisted. Asher
had no doubt that Clíodhna could top whatever he could do, and more.

“You are a goddess,” Euryale continued, “Does Asher have a way of getting in touch
with you if he needs you? I don’t mind telling you that I’m happy to know we’re not completely
alone.”
She looked from the goddess to the man and Asher paused, and then glanced at his
mother.
“I can reach out if I need to, no matter the distance. I think…I think you will be watching,
my Queen, is that right?”
Clíodhna gave him an approving nod. “It is, young Asher. I was concerned you were not
up to this task, but I may have been mistaken. There is more to you than meets the eye. Your god
blood is a potent mixture with banshee stock. And you, Gorgon, you are quite unexpected.”
Euryale said nothing for a moment, studying Clíodhna. The other goddess neither blinked
nor stirred, and Asher wondered if they were communicating without words.
“So, if we need help, then all we have to do is call for one of you?”
Clíodhna appraised Euryale for more long, silent moments and Asher speculated what
they were saying to each other. He could get nothing from behind their shields.
“If you are in need of assistance, we will be there. You have been elected to fight this
battle and we would not take that glory. But you are not going in alone. If the need arises, we
will find you.” She extended a hand toward Roisin. “There is nothing more potent than a mother
protecting her child. In this sense, the banshees are all your mothers.”
“What would be better is identifying who or what we’re trying to find. That, and some
teeth and claws.” Euryale did not appear to be kidding.
Clíodhna appeared to consider Euryale’s statement with the same gravity that the other
goddess had. “Your centuries as a beast have not yet faded. That may prove to be an asset. I wish

there was more I could tell you, but Cian’s mind is clouded from the attack and he remembers
little of it. Just that he heard a high, piercing wail, and then he…exploded. It was gruesome, from
what the Morrigan said. Those women love the blood, which cheesed the banshees off.”
Clíodhna also didn’t appear disturbed by the idea. “He is not quite himself yet, or I would have
had you meet with him.”
“How long do you think these people have been murdering gods?” Asher set his cup
down. He didn’t like that they hadn’t received this information until it started affecting the major
pantheons.
Clíodhna’s gaze went to the horizon, her face shadowed. “A decade or longer. We are
gods, Asher. Time has little meaning for us. There is a method and a reason for what these killers
are doing. Discover that and you will find them.”
He studied the goddess. “Fair enough. But once we do, how do we stop them?”
She returned his gaze, but he couldn’t read her face. “That is the mystery, son of Ares.”
