Excerpt 2, Keeping Secrets
Dear God, he wanted to know if she had betrayed him as he feared.
But he did not ask. Instead, he grabbed her neck and yanked her forward. He sank his lips onto hers.
She pushed at him. She tried to twist her head to the side.
He held her tight. He worked his mouth over hers, up and down, back and forth.
And then, she reached around his shoulders. He slid his hands to her waist, wrapped them to her back, and
tightened his hold.
She pressed herself against him.
His lungs collapsed under the strain. He tore his mouth from hers. “For God’s sake, Mary.” His chest heaved for
more air. “Why can you not tell me what happened?”
A bolt of fire shot from her eyes. She loosened her arms from his neck. She tightened her mouth, swung her arm
to the right, and slammed her palm against his face. His head stirred only slightly from the blow, but the sting burned
nonetheless.
She ran from the barn.
Amon picked up the rake and slung it against the far wall. Tines broke and rained downward.
He had never intended to kiss her, but he had wanted to for so long he could hold out no longer. It had taken all
his willpower to pull back, especially since she had relaxed beneath the onslaught.
Why can you not tell me what happened?
The words had rushed past his teeth before he had a chance to stop them. And now, she would assume he had
taken advantage of her when nothing was further from the truth.
He had thought he was playing with fire when he left, but this was far worse.
This was a conflagration.

He regarded her with a curious expression, and suddenly she realized he’d
dropped his guard. If she lunged for his sword and used it on him before he had a chance
to react…
But that wouldn’t work. If she managed to defeat him, she would still be trapped
in these chains… Or would she?
The chance to attack came and went as he took a step away from her, resting his
palm defensively on the pommel of his sword, more for the werewolf than for her, she
Assumed.
“How does a vampire turn someone?” he asked.
She recognized the question from his field journal, which made much more sense
now that she understood the context spurring his curiosity regarding vampires. “Why do
you want to know?”
“Because…I have been both bitten and scratched, yet nothing has happened to
me. I don’t…understand.”

“You assume I’m more loyal to you than to my kind?” she asked, drumming her
fingers against her folded arms, regarding the blood hunter coolly. “Some might call
giving such information an act of betrayal. I would rather see your eyes turn red because
of the mess you found yourself in by capturing me. Now that would be an interesting turn
of events.”
He sighed, weariness showing in his eyes she hadn’t seen there before. “Just tell
Me.”
“How about something better? I can show you,” she said, smiling evilly as she
sprouted her fangs from where they hid in her gums. She approached him slowly until she
backed him against the wall of the cave. Delicious fear lived in his eyes despite his brave
front. However, before she could get any closer, he lifted his sword between them, the
point an inch away from cutting into her dress.

“Oi! The Watch, run!”
Kaidyn’s ears had caught it, too—the clinking of steel as a patrol wandered nearby, perhaps attracted
by the sounds of their struggle. No others could walk the city streets openly armed, even by day. Not that
Kaidyn wanted to stick around any longer than his attackers. He had no wish to be locked up for the
night either.
The man directly in front of him seized him by the collar of his shirt. “Something to remember me by,”
he muttered, and Kaidyn knew his mouth was open but couldn’t hear his own gasp as he was dealt a
final blow. The hit wasn’t in his stomach again, as he’d been expecting, but at the side of his head. It felt
like an object struck him, not merely a fist, but something blunt and hard. He felt the blood begin to drip
from the base of his skull and trickle down his neck. The world wavered around him as the last of the
men ran off. Cowards, all.
Kaidyn took an uneven step, then several more. He tilted toward the ground but did not fall. Luck.
Where is Luck? I have to find him, before…
He was still so angry, but his thoughts were leaking out of him along with the blood, the dizziness
beginning to con-sume them. If I don’t hurry…
The stars were wheeling somewhere above him. When did I fall to the ground? He tried to search for
a familiar landmark, but his sight was failing him. Kaidyn had either drank too much or been hit too hard.
“Oh!” Kaidyn heard a gasp, but it had not come from him. It wasn’t Luck, either. He tried to get up, to
defend himself once more, but his hands met only empty air.
“I’m not going to hurt you, I promise—”
Kaidyn growled, his tone low and furious.
“All right, all right,” the voice soothed him. “I’ll just wait until you’re ready to walk again, shall I?” The
unknown per-son sounded sympathetic. Gentle, even, and impossibly, unbearably kind. But that must
have been in his head, because surely nobody who saw Kaidyn in his current state could be anything but
disappointed, disgusted, or a combination of the two.
“It’s going to be all right,” the voice continued, and to Kaidyn’s astonishment he felt a cool hand
touching his brow, brushing wisps of hair from his forehead. He could not remember the last time he had
been touched with such tenderness. “I have you. You’re safe now. I won’t leave you alone here.”
Kaidyn shook his head, forcing his sight to clear. A pair of eyes stared anxiously back down at him
and drew him in, as though calling him on from somewhere. But from where? Where…
Kai!
He had definitely imagined that part, because this stranger, whoever he was, could not have known
his name, much less the one reserved for his closest friends.
Kai!
But he could not think any longer, he was falling, falling… and running again, running away from the
pain and the bile rising in his throat, escaping everything but the darkness that finally overtook him to
swallow him whole.

A lifelong resident of northern New Jersey, Dawn Altieri has been scribbling stories practically since birth. After reaching a milestone birthday (she won’t say which one), she figured it was about time she took a shot at writing professionally. With an overactive imagination and a slightly twisted mind, she enjoys reading dark and dangerous tales almost as much as writing them. When she’s not curled up on the sofa with her laptop, her latest story, a box of chocolates and a cup of tea (or a glass of wine, depending on the time of day), she can be found volunteering in the world of animal rescue. To keep a roof over her head, she works in the printing industry as a graphic production artist. She shares her home with her husband and daughter, and a menagerie of rescued fur-babies. Emma made her way through the crowded sidewalks toward her apartment, struggling to
balance the plants, her groceries, and her purse. She could grab a cab, but at the rate traffic was
moving, she’d make it home faster if she walked. Maybe that wasn’t the best decision with
everything she had to carry, but New York City was alive with people enjoying the warmest
evening spring had offered so far. The fresh air carried a promise of invigoration and renewal she
desperately needed.
The sky took on an orange glow as the sun dipped between skyscrapers. As she traversed
the last few blocks toward her apartment building, darkness settled in more quickly than she’d
expected. She headed up the steps to the building’s entrance and shifted everything to one arm so
she could access the keypad next to the door with the other hand.
“Need help with that?”

She turned at the odd, raspy sound close behind her, like that of a man trying to disguise
his voice. A tall, muscular figure emerged from behind the potted shrubbery, dressed all in black
and wearing a ski mask that revealed nothing but his hazel green eyes.
A ski mask? In May?
He gripped her elbow and she gasped. The tray of flowers crashed to the concrete. Her bag
of vegetables tumbled to the ground and scattered in every direction. She managed a muffled cry
as he slapped a work glove-covered hand over her mouth, filling her nose with the stench of
rubber.
He spun her back to his chest and choked off her air with a thick arm around her neck.
“Shut up,” he snarled. The malicious command vibrated off her skin, sending a cold chill down
her spine. He stepped backward as if to drag her toward the corner of the building.
“Hey!” Mrs. Henderson from 5B hurried toward them, still in her scrubs after her shift at
New York Presbyterian. “Get your hands off her!”
The man released Emma so quickly she fell backward and landed hard on the stone planter
box next to the doorway. He stood frozen, his furious gaze fixed on her like a wild animal who’d
lost its prey and couldn’t decide whether or not to give up. She fought to memorize anything she
could about him, but it was all a blur once he turned and took off down the sidewalk.
Mrs. Henderson reached her side, grabbed her hands, and steadied her. “Emma, are you all
right?”
“Yeah,” she said as she stared down the street after her attacker, fighting for breath. “I’m
okay.”
But who the hell was that?
And oh my God. Had he just tried to abduct her?
