where she leaned against the rail, deeply inhaling the calming scent of salty waters. While she
was enjoying the serenity of the evening, Arthur came up beside her. For a moment, their silence
was loud. She didn’t feel like speaking to him, not that she was angry, but she was still trying to
figure him out and his presence clouded her judgment. He was a step ahead of her.

My journey as an immigrant to the United States started in 1988 with my husband, my dreams, aspiration and hope. We adapted to the American way of life and was able to build our American dream. Our American born children, Moustafa and Dena, have incorporated their heritage with American culture and are committed to education and helping others in the community. Upon arrival to the United States, I worked as a waitress while pursuing my degree. In 1992, I obtained my master’s degree in nursing and began my career as a nurse practitioner. We all share different challenges. The important thing is to never give up. Persistence is a great quality and one that we should all look to acquire. In 2013, I wrote two books on leadership and empowerment while pursuing my Doctoral degree. In 2015, I faced a real test of courage, I felt betrayed from within—I was diagnosed with cancer. I know that we all have struggles that we want to face on our own behind closed doors; we feel that if people were to discover them, we would be vulnerable and never looked at the same way. I finally mastered the courage to stand before everyone and share my daily struggles. While doing chemotherapy, I attended classes for my doctorate and worked part-time. “Let’s play a game,” Clay suggested.
“Okay.” Katie sat cross-legged on the bed, setting her half-eaten bagel on a paper napkin. “What’s this
game called?” She seemed interested as she licked cream cheese off her lower lip.
“It’s called, ‘What Would Happen If…’ I’ll go first. I’m going to ask you a question leading off with
‘What would happen if?’ and you answer. Okay?”
She nodded eagerly.
“Okay. What would happen if…we stayed in bed all day long?” He watched her mull her answer over.
“We would…create a book called ‘Eat-Sleep-Sex,’ and it would become a best-seller,” she answered
matter-of-factly.
He laughed. “You’re good. And you’re right; it would become a best-seller. Now it’s your turn. You ask
me a question.”
She looked up at the skylight briefly before looking him in the eye. “What would happen if… you wrote a
song about me?”
Clay felt a fluttering of butterflies in his stomach, not sure how to answer her question.
Katie’s face fell. “I’m sorry. I’ve already ruined this game, haven’t I? That was pretty presumptuous of
me…”
“No,” he interrupted. “It’s not presumptuous at all. It’s just that…I’ve already written a song with you in
mind. In fact, your beautiful face has often come to mind while I write.” He watched her cheeks tinged
with a pinkish hue.
“Really? That’s incredible,” she said excitedly. “What would happen if you shared one of those songs
with me right now?”
“Now wait a minute. It’s not your turn anymore.”
“Clay!” She threw a pillow at him, giggling like a schoolgirl.
He caught the pillow and kept it in his lap. “What would happen if I made you wait?”
“What would happen if I kept my clothes on for the rest of the weekend?” She pouted, crossing her arms
in front of her chest.
“What would happen if I grabbed you right now and spanked your behind?”
Her eyes grew wide. “What would happen if I tied you up to this headboard and had my way with you?”
Clay slowly moved their breakfast picnic to the side and crawled across the bed toward her like a cat on
the prowl. When he was within a few inches of her face, he spoke very slowly with intention. “What
would happen if I wanted you to stay here forever?”
His comment must have caught her off-guard because her expression immediately softened, and she
brought a hand up to stroke his cheek.
“What would happen if I did?”

The roads were wide tracks in the ground, the ground around the edges of each hut a trampled
mess of sticky mud. Woven grass mats were laid in the middle of the messes, probably to
increase traction despite the mud reaching through any holes available.
I followed the beaten path to the closest cluster of buildings, finding my way to a
building with a crudely-constructed porch made of logs forced into place among the mud. The
sounds of community drifted through a makeshift curtain of thick leaves covering the entrance.
A pair of pale, hollow-eyed elves walked past, keeping their heads down as they pushed past the
leaves and made their way into the building.
Judging by the many muddy tracks on the makeshift porch, this place was where the
elves gathered. Or at least, one of them. Might as well start asking question and see what I could
see.
I went to the curtain and attempted to brush it aside. My hand passed through the leaves
instead. I pondered it for a second before snorting to myself; of course. Of course I can’t interact
with things. I pushed past the curtains and entered the hub.
