Draculacon III happening next weekend May 21, 2011

I thought I would post about this since it’s a unique event that may appeal to some of my readers.

I’ll be honest I’ve never attended this event but I’d heard of some of the interesting events that take place and see some of the unique cars and costumes involved in this event. It’s not an event for everyone but it’s definitely different.

Draculacon III is taking place next weekend May 21, 2011 from 1 pm to midnight in Windber, PA.  This event is perfect for the Dracula fans, ghost chasers, haunted house fans, and more.  Each year they change it up and bring in authors, ghost hunters, occult experts, movie stars from creepy movies, speakers, and bands that fit the theme.  Some people really get into this and you see creepy cars and costumes.

This years line up includes:

–Kyra Schon who was a child actress in the 1968 version of Night of the Living Dead.  She’ll be speaking and hanging out at the Grand Midway Hotel in Windber (which is said to be haunted) and having a question and answer session after she speaks.  Last year they had the actor who played the original Eddy Munster.

–Rosemary Ellen Guiley is an expert on the paranormal and supernatural.  She has written many books on the subject and her books have been translated into 14 different languages.

–Adam Blai is a religious demonologist.  He works with the Roman Catholic Church and will be speaking at this event.

There are also several other authors that will be present and speaking.

Also included in the line up is a bunch of musical groups that includes: Bridge City Bombshells, Cadillac Creeps, and more.

I found this website which has more details.  You can also purchase tickets for the event on the site:  http://www.thecemetery.net/Dcon/Draculacon2011.html

TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh review

Driving through Pittsburgh we were able to find the Grand Chapiteau  (Cirque Du Soleil’s trademark big top) quite easily.  Located just off of 20th street in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, there was ample parking for the event.  My husband and I had talked excitedly about what to expect, as we have never been to any Cirque Du Soleil performance before. The parking attendants directed everyone to their parking spot. Before long we were headed through the gates toward the Grand Chapiteau.

Friendly TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil staff  greeted you as you came through the gate.  Everything was clearly marked from the restrooms to which door you had to go through according to your ticket.  Although it was busy, we got out food and drinks for the performance with a smile and a thank you.  We found our door quickly and were soon seated by helpful staff.  Even the seats that were further away were still good seats.

The show begins with a little bit of comedy.  Each act in the TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil was thrilling.  I found myself holding my breathe and shaking my head in disbelief at times. I wasn’t sure initially what my husband would think of the show.  It only took about 15 minutes into the 2 and a half hour show for me to know he was enjoying himself too.

The visual appeal of TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil was unbelievable. From the gorgeous costumes to the stage entrance which changed with some type of digital effects for each performance.  Every detail was accounted for.

As for the performers themselves, they seemed almost superhuman at times.  The degree of strength, balance, talent, and professionalism deserves to be pointed out. I saw the TOTEM performers complete feats I’ve never seen live before. I don’t want to spoil it for some of my readers that are going.  So I’ll just say, my husband and I talked about what we saw almost the whole way home (we had an 1hr and 45 minute drive home).  Even as we laid our head on our pillow my husband said “I just can’t get over that guy…….”  Well you’ll just have to see the show for yourself.

TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh ran like a well oiled machine.  Everything from the parking situation to the way you were seated, the performance, to exiting the show was a smooth transition.  Every single staff member we encountered did their job well and made the experience very memorable.

The shows open to the public today in Pittsburgh and run until June 5, 2011.  You can buy your tickets for the Pittsburgh showsHERE.  There are even family specials where you can take a family of four for $131.

If you’re not near Pittsburgh you can still catch TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil. TOTEM will be at the following locations:

Montreal, Quebec opening June 16 2011

Toronto, Ontario opening Aug. 11, 2011

San Francisco, CA “coming soon”

London, UK opening Jan. 6, 2012

If you have the opportunity to see this show, I would most certainly recommend it.  Well worth the money for the tickets.  I feel confident that you will be just as pleased with the show as I was.  I also think it important to point out how TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil is giving back with the “One Drop” benefit that gives access to clean water for all and educates on managing one of our precious resources.  At the end of the show they collected pocket change for this benefit as well as other fundraising that is completed throughout the year.

***I received 2 tickets to attend media night for TOTEM by Cirque Du Soleil in Pittsburgh May 11 in order to complete a review and host the already completed giveaway. Any opinions expressed are my own. I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post***

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in theatres May 20

I am definitely a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. I was excited to hear about the next one coming out May 20th, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

This time Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the Fountain of Youth. A woman from his past (Penelope Cruz) forces him on the the Pirate Blackbeard’s (Ian McShane) boat the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Even if you’ve never seen a Pirates of the Caribbean movie before you can start watching and still get into the action.  Johnny Depp is wonderful as Captain Jack Sparrow.  As someone who has seen all the movies so far, I love to see his character in each movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean is categorized as a Comedy-Adventure.  Which I think is accurate given the other movies. This movie will have a rating of PG-13. Official release date is May 20, 2011.  From Director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. You can watch the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer below.

LEGO® KIDSFEST is coming to Pittsburgh in June more sites scheduled too

My boys get LEGO® Club Magazine. They received a postcard in the mail about LEGO® KIDSFEST coming to Pittburgh in June. I ready myself for the “Mommy can we go PLLLEEAASSEE!” Predictably I hear those very words. My boys are big LEGO fans. In fact at Christmas my 7 year old’s list was basically a LEGO wishlist.

My thought was, “What is there to do at LEGO® KIDSFEST?” As I found out, the answer is, plenty.

–LEGO master builders (yea the guys who get paid to play with LEGOs) will be sharing tips, tricks, and giving live demonstrations

–Help build a piece of a giant mystery mural to help reveal the image

–build your own LEGO car and race it down a ramp.  Race against friends and family

–Play LEGO board games in the LEGO games arena

–Build whatever you like in the LEGO Construction Zone

–Don’t worry the littlest LEGO fans aren’t left out (thank goodness for my soon to be 2 yr old) there’s a “LEGO DUPLO Jams” area for toddlers to explore and build all while listening to fun playroom tunes.

LEGO® KIDSFEST will cover over 175,000 sq feet of fun.  LEGO® KIDSFEST usually sells out so it’s best to get your tickets soon.  Adult tickets are $20 and kids are $18.  Kids under 2 years old are free.
