“Follow me, kid.” She led him down a gray hallway with mulberry-colored carpet, more plush
than anything he’d ever seen in a governmental office. The place had to be a city block wide,
with corridors branching off to other conduits. Here and there, a doorway opened. Wes saw that
many were filled with groups of people sitting at polished conference tables. Some rooms were
dark, with shades drawn, the light of a presentation on screens peeking through the slats of the
blinds. Staff walked through the hallways, nodding to each other. Some were in pairs. All had a
badge hanging on a chain or attached to a pocket. He squinted, but he couldn’t make out the
impression on the shield. Forget about attempting to read it. He shrugged; while it looked
official, it was unfamiliar. For a person who grew up with an entire family in law enforcement, he
found it odd that he’d never seen it before.
“What is this place?” he asked.
“This is where the magic happens,” she told him cryptically.
She opened the door, whispering, “Prepare to be amazed.” Then, with a giant pop of her gum,
she disappeared.
“Where…” Wes turned, looking for the woman, but couldn’t see her anywhere. “Where is…”
“Oh, she’s gone. Come in already,” a male voice ordered impatiently.
Wes spun to the speaker, his eyes settling on a small man seated at a glass desk. He was in a
neat gray suit but wore a black turtleneck, which made him look like some odd, eccentric
leftover from the beatnik generation. He was older than Wes’s father, Wes guessed somewhere
north of sixty, with the thickening middle of a sedentary life, a tanned complexion, and silver
hair. His chubby face sported a neatly trimmed goatee. Wes wondered where his beret might
be. The man studied Wes with interested black eyes that glowed with merriment.
“What kind of department is this?”
“Mr. Wesley Paul Rockville. Son of Harris and Melinda, brother to Lauren and Andrew. Tough
act to follow. Runt of the litter?”
Wes bristled, wondering where this pint-size dude got off calling him a runt. At six foot three, he
was hardly considered small. “I fail to see what this has got to do with my reassignment,” he
said icily.
The older man ignored him. “The young gun who had his free will sucked right out of him.”
“No one took my free will!” Wes shouted, his face hot.
“I think Miss Genevieve Fox did a pretty nice number on you.”
“What are you talking about?”
Alastair cocked his head, a smile playing on his lips.
“I don’t think this is funny, um…Alastair. I’m getting out of here.” Wes had had enough. He was
pissed and hungry.
“Sit down, Agent Rockville. It’s time you learned about your new assignment.”

I am a Runner, the Memoirs of a Sepsis Survivor
by Maria Papalia-Meier
What I have told, and will continue to tell people…Never give up. Willpower, from the mind
and heart, is the whole shebang. It’s what’s been and what will be.
I went from being the sickest person to running a half-marathon. I turned my back on the
Angel of Death. It wasn’t my time. I have fought the reaper, and fought the river of death. I
accepted the compelling and intimidating challenges that kept pummeling me in the face.
I merely punched back.
People are the most complex living beings in our world. I was one of those people who
always exaggerated how bad I felt.
Never again. I know and understand too much. Like an inexperienced boxer in the ring, I was
struck down and knocked out. But I wouldn’t let the beast keep me down. I refused to succumb
to my own wallowing tears of woe.
I was no longer the same person I was before my surgeries. I wasn’t about to obsess over the
negative. Reality was a kicker.
I was being realistic.
Toes don’t grow back.
I’ve accepted what has happened. I didn’t want to, but honestly, was there another option? I
came to terms with what I had to do, and had every intention of controlling what I could in my
life.
Here are the brutal facts:
I was in excruciating pain, with what seemed like never-ending twists of random setbacks.
The beast tried to break me, make me bend in places I never thought I’d go. I refused to die. I
wouldn’t give in to the weakness of surrender.
I was repulsed by my feebleness.
I shook my fist at my mortality.
I was angry.
I was terrified.
I was happy to be alive.
I was loved.
Because of all of those and many more, because of who I was, it only made me stronger. It
fastened and deepened the conviction of survival in my heart.
I almost lost my life. It would’ve been a pretty hefty price to pay for a neglected strep
infection.
Who knew such a minor thing could become so fatal?

Five elders knelt in novena prayer in front of the wooden statue of Saint Therese. The statue was also
known as the Little Flower. Scattered amidst the pews, the men in various stages of balding whispered
into their hands. Sitting behind them, a steely-haired woman stared up at the statue.
Together, they whispered, “Little Flower, please send us the help we need.”
Sitting back, they waited.
“Let’s hope we get an answer soon.” The gray-haired woman glanced over her shoulder at the door.
“We’re running out of time.”
“We have one more day,” replied the man with black-rimmed glasses.

“We’re in day eight of our nine-day novena.”
“No,” she replied. Sitting up straighter, she clasped her hands together. “I’m quite sure this is the ninth
day.”
“It is,” the other three responded.

“You should learn how to count,” laughed the man with a saucershaped bald spot bordered by salt-and-
pepper hair. A large crash echoed through the chapel.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” a man from another room cried out.
“He’s in the house,” said the quiet man, partially bald with platinum strands that ran down his neck. His
ruddy complexion and bulbous nose
gave him the appearance of a Christmas bulb.
Wearing a brace on his right leg from the ankle up past his knee, Father Joe Methuen hobbled out the
sacristy door with his crutches. Dressed in black pants and shirt, he wore his ever present priestly white
collar. Simply known as Father Joe, his youth followed him even though he just celebrated his seventieth
birthday. Still owning a full head of lightbrown hair with only a slight touch of gray, he wore frameless
glasses that accentuated his long thin nose.
Over the last thirty years, his chapel experienced both good and bad times. Currently, they were bad.
Reconstructive knee surgery due to a black ice fall added more weight to his otherwise heavy cross. His
once
robust flock of parishioners had dwindled to meager numbers over the last decade with no relief in sight.
The parish properties had been folded into the auspices of the Caribou Diocese. A dreaded call from the
bishop
announced the sad news. “We’re selling the Home. We don’t have a choice.”
At least the bishop was allowing their residents a little dignity by keeping the doors open until the last one
passed on to heaven. Approaching the elders, Father Joe thought about how many the Home of the
Little
Flower had served throughout the years. Kerr Bird Song had deeded his 25,000-square-foot mansion to
the chapel, and the Home, as it came to be known, cared for many of Birdsong’s local residents.
“What do you want to hear first?” Father Joe sighed as he stood before the elders. “The good news or
the bad?”
“What did you break now, Father?” the woman asked.
“Nothing, Mary. I just knocked over a small table.”
“Just another little thing for me to clean up,” she replied, shaking her head.
“What will it be? The good or the bad?” Father Joe glanced over at the woman. “Mary?”
“Let’s get the bad over with,” she replied.
“The bad it is. Our recreational director just quit. The good . . .”
His eyes trailed upward and into the heavens. “The diocese is sending a temporary administrator to
replace the one who resigned last month. But only part-time.”
“Let’s face it, Father,” the bald man said. “We’re a sinking ship. Parttime is probably better than no time.”
They all laughed.
The bald man added, “Now we only need the person heaven is sending us. Two for the price of one
would be a winner for all.”

As someone with anxiety, writing is my way of speaking. When my verbal skills fail, my pen excels. I have a message for you. A message for my family, my friends and to all the beating hearts. Dear You is a letter personally written, from me to you. Wires and Veins
Well hello there, gorgeous world, it has been some time since you and I have had an
uncomfortably deep conversation. These days I have been spinning in an auspicious state of
denial, visibly hiding from the demons and dark thoughts. If I may take a moment to confess, it
is extremely exhausting trying to deny one’s brokenness. I don’t know why I would even feel the
need to hide from the dark thoughts and demons that reside in the back allies of my mind. They
are as much a part of me as I am them. To be honest, I ponder if I would be the same
human(ish) if their existence was obliterated.
Freak
Misfit
Outcast
Damaged
These black light words will eternally reside on my flesh, seeping down into the bottom left
corner of my pulsating brain. iDerra is who I am, it’s who you young Frankensteins created. A
human heart with a mechanical mind, wires and veins intertwining inside a titanium bone frame
disguised with German/ Irish freckled flesh. I wasn’t always half robotics, once upon a time ago I
resided in the mortal world. But, as the years aged my young innocence, societal attacks that I
was unprepared for exploded. Two choices stood before my torched self, exhale one last
carbon breath or deeply inhale a puff of chilled oxygen and stand up. The first option felt
calming, yet an unknown source within forced the latter.
Thus, was created Derra 2.0, quite a long and mentally torturous journey was taken to get to
that point, but I suppose it’s better than waving the white flag.
There are many aspects of life that I am unsure of, but there is one aspect that I am 100% solid
on and that is Me. I am acutely aware of my inner workings, why I do things and why I say
things. There is always a method to my madness. I was never and won’t ever be one of those
humans who can say, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t thinking.” Or “I had no idea I did that.” Because I do
know. As useful as this characteristic may seem, trust me when I say that it isn’t exactly what it’s
cracked up to be. I sometimes wish that I had a smidgen of ignorance, sometimes. My point with
this fun little fact is that when I say that I am broken it rings true. This is not a word that I lightly
throw about to gain pity, sympathy or the spot light. It is a mere fact. I am broken.
I am going to let you in on a little secret (are you listening?), we are all broken on varying levels,
I just choose to not suffocate that part like most do. I did try to once, back when it was safe to be
one’s self, but the outcome was silently suicidal. Hiding who I am to keep your comfort intact is
a mission I can no longer carry out, for the end result will consist of my self-destruction. That’s
okay though, we all need to party in the uncomfortable zone from time to time. Discomfort brings
out the thoughts and issues we work like hell to ignore but need to feel. Stop ignoring them,
open the door that leads to your dark place and face your demons (fears, doubts, insecurities,
past monsters) one at a time. Discomfort causes a chain reaction of human growth personally
and publicly.
So, here we are world, just you and I. How about we grab a latte, a chocolate croissant and talk
about the thoughts from my broken brain.
P.S. Me being me, I usually attach a playlist containing the songs that temporarily calm the
chaos of my cerebral storm, however the lyrical inspiration is too vast for this particular project.
Therefore, I am sharing the top 5 artists/bands on my “Morphine” playlist…
Fall Out Boy
Eminem
Beyoncé
Twenty-One Pilots
Blink 182
There you go, there’s your aspirin for those life migraines.
Headphones… coffee… face the world… bed… repeat.
