It just so happens that Ada is the one they’ve been looking for. He doesn’t know what they intend to do to her, and he doesn’t care. C.A. Gray is the author of three YA Amazon bestselling trilogies: PIERCING THE VEIL (magic and quantum physics meet Arthurian legends), THE LIBERTY BOX (dystopian metaphysics and mind control technology), and UNCANNY VALLEY (dystopian coming-of- age with neuroscience and super intelligent A.I). She starts with some scientific concept that she’s interested in learning more about herself, and then creates lots of epic chaos and high-stakes action to go along with it. Her stories are free of gratuitous violence, language, and sexual content, and she abhors depressing endings… but they’re not all kittens and rainbows either! She also listens to and reviews audiobooks on her website (www.authorcagray.com), Goodreads, Instagram, and on her podcast, Clean Audiobook Reviews, where she also occasionally interviews other authors. By day, C.A. Gray practices naturopathic medicine, podcasts, and writes medical non-fiction under her maiden name (Lauren Deville). She lives in Tucson, AZ with her husband Frank, and together they maintain an occasionally contentious film review blog (under her real name: Lauren Baden. Three names. Yes.) She’s kind of the queen of multitasking–so in her spare time, she creates whatever meals or crafts she found most recently on Pinterest, drinks lots of coffee (Aeropress btw) and occasional wine (reds–and she saves the corks for craft projects), works out (while listening to audiobooks), and studies the Bible (about half of the podcasts on Christian Natural Health are scripture meditations). …She does sleep, too. I slid into the chair across from Kaison, accidentally splashing a bit of latte on the metal table. Aaron
hadn’t bothered to put a lid on it, and my hands shook.
“Hi,” I said, self-consciously tucking a lock of hair behind my ear that had escaped my ponytail.
“Hi.” Kaison stood and offered me that muscular hand to shake, turning the smolder on me. I hated
myself for it, but my heart skipped a beat as I slipped my hand in his. The contrast between my pale skin
and his deep olive tone drew my attention—perhaps because everything about this moment felt
heightened. Surreal.
“I heard them call you Ada.” He held my hand too long. He wasn’t even shaking it.
I nodded, feeling my cheeks heat up. “Yes. Ada Edwards.”
He absorbed this for a moment. “Very pleased to meet you, Ada Edwards.” He actually brought my hand
to his lips and kissed it. I heard myself giggle involuntarily, and hated myself even more. “I’m Kaison
Hughes.”
“Yeah, I figured that out.”
“But please, call me Kai.” He finally released my hand, and gestured at the chair as he sat down himself.
“Oh-kay…” I sat, and he sipped his mocha, completely at ease. I waited for an explanation, but he didn’t
seem to be in a hurry to give me one. “So… I’m sorry. Do we know each other?” I knew the answer of
course, but it was the only way I could think of to address his bizarre behavior.
“If we did, then introductions would hardly be necessary, would they?” His eyes twinkled at me. He was
enjoying this.
“It’s just—why did you single me out like that?”
He tilted his head to the side. “Really?”
“Really, what?”
“You can’t think of any reasons why a guy might see you across a crowded room and think, ‘I’ve gotta
meet that girl’?”
I frowned, a little annoyed now. I knew what he was implying, and even if he’d been an ordinary guy, I’d
have had trouble buying it. I had no illusions about my looks. I was cute— pretty, even. But not gorgeous,
and certainly not in the league of Lara Benanati and Amelia Rogers.
“That’s not why.”
“How do you know?” I narrowed my eyes at him. “I saw you at the park last night.” It came out more of
an accusation than I’d intended.
He laughed. “I should hope so, I wasn’t exactly hiding!”
I blinked, confused. “But… what were you doing there?”
“Same thing I’m doing here. Looking for you.”
I blinked, waiting for him to add ‘just kidding.’ He didn’t; he just watched me with that amused smirk of
his.
“And you don’t think that requires an explanation?”
“Oh, I’m quite certain it does, and I’ll tell it to you eventually. But it’s fun watching you try to figure it
out in the meantime.” He shrugged, and took another sip of his mocha. “So how about it. Any theories?”
“None,” I answered honestly.
He looked disappointed. “Oh come on. Humor me. Make something up.”
I opened my mouth and closed it again like a guppy. “You’re… here for a show, and… fancied a stroll at
night? In… the… worst part of town?”
“I already told you that I was looking for you, specifically. Your theory must include that crucial fact.”
“You… think I’m your long lost sister?”
“Oh, Lord, I hope not,” Kai leaned forward, his eyes twinkling. I felt my face grow hot, and couldn’t hold
his gaze.
“Uhh… you’re looking to cast a particular look for your next music video, and I fit the bill? Even though
I can’t imagine why a hundred other girls wouldn’t also…”
“Boring!” he announced, grinning at me. “Think bigger. More… supernatural.”
“Okay, is there a hidden camera somewhere?” I made a show of looking around. “Please tell me I’m not
gonna be humiliated on some viral YouTube video…”
Kai suddenly became serious. “Sorry. I’m just messing with you. Tell me something. Tell me about your
family.”
I blinked. “My… family?”
“Yes, your family. What do your parents do? Any siblings?”
“Uh, it’s just my papa and me. No siblings. My mom died when I was young.”

Kai gave a tiny nod. “I’m sorry.”
I shrugged. “It was a long time ago.”
“Doesn’t mean it can’t still hurt.”
I dropped my eyes, feeling even more off-balance. What was going on here?
“May I ask… how she died?”
“She was murdered,” I answered, looking up at him boldly, as if daring him to have a come-back to that.
“By some people she was trying to help.”
“I’m so sorry,” Kai said again. But he didn’t seem surprised. “I know this might seem strange, but do you
have an unusual birthmark, perhaps?”
I froze, taken aback. “What kind of a question is that?”
Kai’s expression cleared, and he looked almost smug. “Because if you do,” he emphasized the word, “I
don’t think it’s really a birthmark.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Show me.”
“No!” I cried at once. No way was I going to voluntarily reveal my most shameful feature to Kaison
Hughes, of all people.
“Ada.” His expression softened, and he reached across the table to take my hand. I reflexively began to
pull it away, but he grabbed it before I could. Then, methodically, he flipped it over, straightened out my
curled fingers, and began to massage my palm with his thumb. I’d had two boyfriends, but even including
every encounter I’d ever had with them, this was, hands down, the most sensual experience of my life. I
couldn’t speak. Honestly, I had a hard time breathing.
Kai took his time, raising his eyes to mine only once he knew I was putty in his hands.
“Please?”
I swallowed. I couldn’t believe I was about to do this—it was like I was under a spell or something. But I
turned my head, lowered the collar of my white shirt, and lifted my ponytail to reveal the angry red
geometric-looking birthmark at the nape of my neck. Ever so gently, Kai brushed his fingertips against it,
and—
I gasped and jerked away from him, severing the connection.
“What was that?”
He knew what I meant—the moment his fingertips made contact with the birthmark, there was a kind of
explosion in my brain. I suddenly realized I was panting. His mouth twisted into that smug smirk again.
“Like I said,” he murmured, in that sexy bedroom voice of his. “Not a birthmark.”
“Then what is it?”
Kai bit his lip, and cast a glance inside. “Your break is probably about over, right? What are you doing
tonight?”
I blinked, trying to down-shift. “Uhh…”
He stood up, and I did too. From inside his jacket, he produced a couple of tickets. “Ever heard Bloodline
play before? We’re playing Sprint Center tonight. These are backstage passes, in case you want to invite a
friend along.”
My mouth still hung open, and Kai’s grin grew wider. He reached for my hand, and placed the tickets in
them. Then he leaned in next to my ear and whispered, “Traditionally the appropriate response is, ‘Thank
you. I’ll see you there.’” He pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, though he was close enough to
kiss me. “So will I?”
“Sure,” was all I could manage.
“Good.” He took another step back, raising the hand holding the tickets to his lips again. He kissed my
fingertips this time, slow and lingering. “Until tonight, Ada Edwards. I’ll be counting the minutes.”

As it turned out, the giant of a man—whose name was Gerald—didn’t want to stab me.
Which was a bit of a relief. I’d yet to have my tattoos reapplied, and I didn’t fancy my
chances against a bloke his size without them. By the looks of him, he could’ve gripped me
in a bear hug and squeezed my insides outside like the contents of a tube of toothpaste.
‘The Long Man is waiting for you,’ said Gerald.
The Long Man? That rang a bell. We hadn’t crossed paths before, but I’d heard all
sorts of whispers about things like him in the darkened corners of pubs at three in the
morning. About demons.
‘Okay. Where’s he at? Maybe we could do lunch.’
‘He is inside of me,’ he replied.
‘Ah. Oh. Christ.’
Demons tend to occupy little realms of their own, separate from the everyday world
but connected to it via hidden portals. Well, hidden unless you know where to look. It might
be a crack in reality at the bottom of an ancient well, or a hollow in a tree that leads to
another place. Or the door might be a living thing, in this case a really tall, wide man named
Gerald.

‘You’re sure he wouldn’t just like to do this over the phone?’ I asked as I followed
him across the pebble beach and into a small hut.
‘Face-to-face,’ said Gerald as he began to undress, carefully folding each item of
clothing and placing it aside as he did so.
Then came the horrible bit.
Well, the sight of Gerald stark bollock naked wasn’t exactly a delight, but what he
did next was grimmer still.
He took the knife he was holding, turned it upon himself, and jabbed it into his
throat. He didn’t flinch, didn’t scream, he barely even blinked. He dragged the knife down his
neck, down his chest and stomach, until he reached his groin. The whole time he cut away
at himself, not a drop of blood was spilt. Finally, when he was done, he kneeled down and
used his fingers to dig into the long gash he’d fashioned, then he began to peel himself open
until there was a gap large enough for me to crawl through.
‘You know, you’d go down a storm on Britain’s Got Talent,’ I said.
He didn’t laugh, which was fair enough. Crap joke.
‘The Long Man is waiting,’ he said.
‘Right. Just gonna crawl inside you now, Gerald. Nothing weird about that.’
I got down on my hands and knees and began to creep into the opening. I wasn’t
sure what I was expecting, exactly. Would I be fighting my way through organs? Apparently
not. Instead, it was like I was making my way through a gap in a fence, and I found myself
crawling across a carpet of brown, fallen leaves and twigs. I turned to see a gap in reality. A
hole through which I could still see the beach hut I was in just moments ago.
‘Okay. Right. Cool.’
I stood, brushed the clinging sticks and leaves from my jeans, and took in my
surroundings. They were, in a word, bleak. The colour scheme was shades of grey and
black, the surrounding landscape mostly barren rock. A light breeze toyed with loose stones
and twigs, stirring up the parched earth. It wasn’t the kind of place tourists go mad for, put it
that way.
There was a single building a little way in the distance, an ancient, crumbling
cathedral, made from large blocks of stone blacker than Hitler’s heart. Its spire was broken
in two, most of it laid out on the ground like a fallen tree. A twin pair of stained glass
windows looked down at me depicting jagged flames licking at the bodies of anguished
sinners. A wide-open set of wooden double doors formed the mouth of the building.
‘Time to stick my head into the lion’s gob,’ I said to myself, and walked towards the
entrance.

Searching frantically for the restroom sign, I spied what I thought was the ladies’ room
and ran for it, head down, fist gripping the strap of my bag as if it were a lifeline to bladder
relief.
So of course, when I slammed into something rock-solid but warm and firm as well, the
first thing I thought was I was going to pee myself. Not, argh, I’ve just run into someone and
I need to apologize.
I stumbled back a step, flinging the poor woman in my way a harried glance. And froze
when that harried glance found not a poor woman, but a tall, broad-shouldered, stunningly
hot—no, change that—stupefyingly hot, gorgeous guy with shaggy dark-brown hair hanging
over equally dark-brown eyes so intense and beautiful and sexy and—
He wrapped strong fingers around my upper arms and steadied me before I could fall
completely on my ass.
“Hey, I think you’re heading into the wrong loo.”
I gazed up at him and didn’t say a word. I’d’ve liked to have blamed sleep deprivation
and jet lag for my ridiculous silence, but they weren’t the culprits.
The guy holding my arms, keeping me upright, was stunning. Gorgeous. Hot. Like a
brown-haired, brown-eyed version of Chris Hemsworth. Only sexier.
I didn’t think that was even possible, but there you go. Tall, with a crooked grin that
made my heart skip a beat and a goddamn divine body, all muscular and sculpted and
perfectly proportioned with the broadest of shoulders, all wrapped up tight in a snug white T-
shirt and snugger faded jeans.
And he had an Australian accent.
Oh boy.
I gaped at him, my heart thumping in my throat.
“Can you speak?” he asked.
I caught my bottom lip with my teeth and shook my head.
His eyebrows shot up. “You can’t?”
“I can,” I blurted, nodding this time. Talk about being a mess of contradictions. “I’m
just …” I paused, stopping myself from telling him I was falling in lust with him. Yeah, not
exactly cool behavior. Gushing all over a complete stranger on the way to the bathroom?
Welcome to Australia.
“I’m just … desperate,” I finished, ducking my head. I sounded like an idiot.

He gave a warm, friendly laugh. “To go to the loo?”
I peered up at him through my bangs. “Yeah.”
That crooked grin returned to his face. As before, it made my body do things I wasn’t
entirely used to.
“You better go then.” He stepped aside and held an arm out, directing me deeper into
the men’s restroom.
Oh my God, was I blushing? I shuffled my feet, frowning.
Devilment danced in his dark-brown eyes. “Something else you’re desperate for?”
Something else? Was he serious? A guy that looked like him, asking me what I
wanted? If I were the brave, take-no-prisoners kind of girl, I’d tell him straight up. Something
else I’m desperate for? Hell yeah, a kiss from you would be a start. But I wasn’t that kind of
girl. I was a sleep deprived, jet lagged student with poor social skills and a disease that wasn’t
exactly high on the sexy list. Of course, I wasn’t going to ask him for a kiss.
No matter how much the thought made my tummy flutter.
He studied me with a playful grin. “Going to tell me what it is?”
“A kiss.” The word fell past my lips before I could stop it.
My face went cold as the blood drained from it. And then hot as all that blood rushed
back into my cheeks just as fast. Holy shit, had I really said that aloud?
“A kiss?” he repeated, lifting an eyebrow.
Oh God, I had said it aloud. I stared at him, once again dumbstruck. What was I doing?
Was I really that tired? Had to be. Why else would I say something so … so …
embarrassing? I couldn’t be flirting with him. I wasn’t any good at it. I was an
environmentalist dork with Parkinson’s. As if I knew how to flirt.
Was I delusional? Was my brain finally betraying me compl—
Warm lips brushed over mine in a lingering caress of skin on skin. I would have melted
on the spot … if it wasn’t for the fact I yelped in shocked disbelief and stumbled back a step.
Mr. Broad Shoulders laughed. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to freak you out.”
Just to make it clear before I continue, I’m not a virgin. I lost my virginity four nights
after my sixteenth birthday, to my high school boyfriend—the quarterback, no less. How’s
that for both an achievement and a cliché? But since I found out I have Parkinson’s, I’ve
pretty much shut down any and all notion of romance. Who wants to get romantic with
someone who’s going to be a shaky mess in a few years? I can’t imagine there are many guys
out there willing to roll with that kind of burden, so I stopped putting myself out there. Which

might explain my very active fantasy obsession with a married Australian actor, now that I
think about it. Hmmm. Desire the impossible to substitute the denied. Makes sense, right?
I gaped up at my mysterious kisser—again. Heart beating way too fast, I pressed my
fingers to my lips. “Why did you do that?”
“You asked.” His grin turned wickedly playful, hinting at a dimple in his right cheek, and he
leaned a little closer to me, his brown eyes holding mine. “And you looked so damn sexy
with your mussed-up hair and coffee-stained shirt.”

A cloud rose from below with a girl on it. Not a whole girl … just a tiny face peering up from otherwise
vague fluff.
Rex dismissed the vapory vision for a trick at first, his thirteen-year-old brain making up junk. But the
elements were there—two eyes, a nose, and a mouth—embedded in the top of a fast-moving cumulus.
The pale features stared in his direction while her white hair drifted around as though floating in a pool of
water.
He mashed his forehead against the airplane window to gain a better view. This wasn’t like any picture in
a cloud he’d seen before, the usual cartoon snails morphing into whales as they skimmed across the upper
atmosphere. This was boring brume except for a strange bit in the middle. The fog pimple mesmerized
him. If he could reach her, Rex believed he’d touch milky skin and billowy strands.
After a few seconds, instead of scudding away, the celestial being grew larger, sailing right for him. The
foremost fringe of the approaching haze met the wing’s metal edge, and the face turned, her gaze locking
with his own.
She looked at him.
Was he dreaming? Had he lost his marbles? Rex marveled out the porthole, certain the noxious fumes
from Stinky Feet, the shoeless guy seated in front of him, had damaged his optical nerve. He grabbed his
mom’s sleeve to say, “There’s a girl in the clouds!” but found her asleep, her dark brown hair covering
one temple and spittle gilding her chin.
His mom had to see this. If he told her about it later, she’d assume he was punking her again like when he
said he had seen a mountain lion in the backyard. But she’d been awake all night packing their suitcases
and mumbling to herself. This on top of how tired she seemed nowadays.
My camera.
Rex recovered it from behind the book he had brought and an in-flight magazine in the seat pocket then
swung back. But Cloud Girl was gone. A regular, innocent-looking cloud sat in her place.

Three days define who a person will be for the rest of their life. The day they are born. Testing Day,
where their abilities are determined. And, of course, Career Day, where social status, wealth, and future
prospects are decided for them by an exhibition hall of employers.
I passed my birth with great pains. According to stories Mom told me, my labor gave her particular
difficulty. After arriving too soon, too weak to survive on my own, I lived in an incubator for the first six
weeks of my life in a struggle to survive. It’s why she sometimes—annoyingly—calls me, “tough guy.”
Up until Testing Day, everyone—from my teachers to my neighbors—called me a late bloomer and
constantly reassured my parents that eventually I would fall into one of the Four Branches of Powers.
They said it as if doing so was something I would just stumble over on the sidewalk one day and say, “Oh
look, there’s my Power!”
Testing Day came early in my ninth year of schooling, alongside everyone else in my class. Those who
had already developed their ability were divided into groups based on their Branch of Power: Somatic for
Powers relating to the body; Naturalist for those with organic Powers; Psionic for the Power of the mind;
and Divinic for those with Powers outside our world. Mostly, this division left me and three other kids—
