My son is 4 years old.  He was a late bloomer as far as potty training goes. In fact we weren’t sure if we could start him in preschool this year.  It came right down to the wire and he finally got it. All my boys were like that.  It seemed like it took forever but once they got it, they really got it, overnight and everything.  That’s not to say that every once in a great while there isn’t an accident.  You know maybe he’s too into playing with his toys and waits to the last minute.  Or he was so tired from a busy day he fell asleep early and slept solid through the night then uh oh!  That seemed to be our problem area.  He was doing really good but he’d have a busy day with preschool, maybe going along to brother’s football game, and playing at home he’d fall asleep on the couch an hour or so before his regular bedtime.  Sleep solid through the night and wake up with a little accident.  When my daughter was born he moved out of the toddler bed and into his own “big boy bed” with a real mattress.  I was glad to try the wearever bedpad with wings.  It’s saved me a lot of work and given him a fresh bed ready for when it’s bedtime.

I chose the Wearever bedpad with wings.  I knew with the way he wiggles and moves around in that bed a regular pad just wasn’t going to stay.   If figured the one with wings my have a better chance.  The picture above I didn’t tuck the wings in yet.  I wanted you to see that the wings were a pretty good size.  In a twin size bed like my son’s they tuck under well.  Here is a pick with the wings all tucked in.

The Wearever bed pad with wings is very thin.  You can see it lays pretty flat on the mattress top.  I wondered what it would look like once the sheets were on and if my son would notice it there.  So we tried it out.

I asked him if he could tell the bed pad was on the bed he said “well I don’t see it” so I rephrased the question and asked him if he was comfortable.  He said “yes, I think so, can I have a story?”  lol.  He’s slept with the pad under his fitted sheet now for about a week with no complaints.  We actually did have two nights where he had a little accident. It wasn’t much but it was the same busy day early bed scenario. It absorbed well.  No sign of smell or dampness on the mattress.

The top layer of the Wearever mattress pad with wings is an 80/20 cotton/polyester blends so it’s pretty soft.  The middle and bottom layers are a waterproof barrier made from a vinyl barrier fabric.  You can see it’s a little shiny and smooth on the underside but you don’t have that odd and tell-tale vinyl fabric sound when you move on it.  There is no sound at all when you lay and move around on it.

  1. My potty training tip is to try and do it in the summer were you can just have training pants on and do not have to worry about a lot of clothes!

  2. My daughter will be 2 this week and we are just to start potty training. I got her some cute big girl underwear to get her excited about it.

  3. The only tips I have are do not let them drink after a certain time and wake them up during the night

  4. with Pierce he has 2 special toys on the back of the toilet –the only time he is allowed to touch and play with them is at potty time—believe it or not it is working– along with lots of praise–and he knows that he will get to have these two toys as soon as he has basically accomplished this when he just goes and potties without reminding him or encouraging him it is time to go–and he does it himself

  5. I can’t say I have any successful tips for my son. My son has autism and nothing I do seems to keep him potty trained! With my daughter, all we had to do was put on a princess potty movie and she was motivated. 🙂
