He regarded her with a curious expression, and suddenly she realized he’d
dropped his guard. If she lunged for his sword and used it on him before he had a chance
to react…

The chance to attack came and went as he took a step away from her, resting his

“How does a vampire turn someone?” he asked.
She recognized the question from his field journal, which made much more sense
now that she understood the context spurring his curiosity regarding vampires. “Why do
you want to know?”
“Because…I have been both bitten and scratched, yet nothing has happened to
me. I don’t…understand.”

“You assume I’m more loyal to you than to my kind?” she asked, drumming her
fingers against her folded arms, regarding the blood hunter coolly. “Some might call
giving such information an act of betrayal. I would rather see your eyes turn red because
of the mess you found yourself in by capturing me. Now that would be an interesting turn
of events.”
He sighed, weariness showing in his eyes she hadn’t seen there before. “Just tell
Me.”
“How about something better? I can show you,” she said, smiling evilly as she
sprouted her fangs from where they hid in her gums. She approached him slowly until she
backed him against the wall of the cave. Delicious fear lived in his eyes despite his brave
front. However, before she could get any closer, he lifted his sword between them, the
point an inch away from cutting into her dress.
