On May 11, 2013 that National Association of Letter Carriers is holding their annual food drive. I’m actually kinda proud to be posting about this.  You see, my dad is a letter carrier and has been (and still is) for many years now.  My dad really gets into this.  It’s actually been a family volunteering event for many years.  It started when I was in cathecism in highschool.  We had to have so many hours of volunteer work.  My dad suggested we help with the food drive.  As a teenager I wasn’t super enthused about it the first year.  We’d go around and get the bags of food off the letter carriers and run it to the post office for them so they would have room in their mail trucks.  As we saw bags on porches we’d collect them and take them to the post office so the letter carriers wouldn’t have to carry those on top of carrying their 40 lb mail bags.  Then we’d weight all the food and figure out how many pounds we collected.  After that first year though I started looking forward to it.  It was a good feeling seeing how much food our small community would give for those in need and knowing it was going to help people in our community.  It was a good feeling to volunteer my time.  It was also nice that it had become a family affair.  I’ve taken my kids with me once they got older so they could volunteer too.

Donating to the food drive is easy.  Collect some non-perishable food items, put them in a bag or box and set it on your porch in plain site for your letter carrier to collect.  Here is some info and ideas for what to give:

1.     Purchase non-perishable food items.
Examples of appropriate food items include:
 ·         Jars of peanut butter
·         Canned fish
·         Packaged dried fruits
·         Boxes of cereal
 2.       Place food items into a bag and leave the bag at your mailbox on Saturday, May 11th.
Your local letter carrier will pick up your and deliver it to your local food bank
 3.       Spread the word.
Tell everyone you know to leave non-perishable food by their mail boxes, too.

Wanna help even more?  Print coupons for your non-perishable food items to donate from CommonKindness.com  When you print then redeem coupons from CommonKindness.com a donation is made to a charity of your choice in their charity list (and there are A LOT).
