Did you know 1 in 4 children have an undetected vision problem?

Last year, one of my boys came home several days in one week complaining of a bad headache. He’d lay on the couch and fall asleep. I took him to his pediatrician. He did a physical and asked a bunch of questions. He said that when he did the eye chart he noticed that one eye seemed to be worse than the other. He recommended I take him to see an optometrist. It never occured to me that it could possibly be a vision issue. They do eye exams every year at the school and it was never brought up before.

Acuvue sent over some interesting info to me.  I thought it would be worth while to pass on to all of you.

Did you know that one in for children have undetected vision problems?

The president of the American Optometric Association (AOA), Dr. Dori Carlson, shared in a recent interview that school vision screening are helpful but, can miss 75% of vision problems.  What’s even more surprising, of those children that were discovered to have vision problems at a school screening, 40% receive no follow up after being diagnosed!

Vision correction is very important for children.  Why? Because vision greatly impacts learning.  Think about it, if a child can’t read a blackboard, read their text book, or their test paper, how can they be expected to learn and study the information? Dr. Carlson shares in a new episode of “Healthy Vision with Dr. Val Jones” tells the solution is comprehensive eye exams for young children.

Some people may think they would notice if their child had a vision problem but according to Dr. Carlson, that’s not necessarily the case.  Children can be misdiagnosed as having a hearing or balance problem when really they may have a strong deficit in one eye or the other.
